1 T he Lord said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt,

The Lord said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt,

2 This month will be the beginning of months. It will be the first month of the year to you.

This month shall be to you the beginning of months, the first month of the year to you.

3 S peak to the people of Israel when they are gathered together. Tell them that on the tenth day of this month, every man must take a lamb for those of his father’s house, a lamb for each house.

Tell all the congregation of Israel, On the tenth day of this month they shall take every man a lamb or kid, according to the family of which he is the father, a lamb or kid for each house.

4 I f those in the house are too few to eat a lamb, let him and his nearest neighbor take the right amount for the number of people. Divide the lamb by how much each can eat.

And if the household is too small to consume the lamb, let him and his next door neighbor take it according to the number of persons, every man according to what each can eat shall make your count for the lamb.

5 Y our lamb must be perfect, a male lamb one year old. You may take it from the sheep or the goats.

Your lamb or kid shall be without blemish, a male of the first year; you shall take it from the sheep or the goats.

6 K eep it until the fourteenth day of the same month. Then all the people of Israel are to kill it in the evening.

And you shall keep it until the fourteenth day of the same month; and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill lamb in the evening.

7 T hen they must take some of the blood and put it on the wood pieces at the sides and top of the door of each house where they will eat it.

They shall take of the blood and put it on the two side posts and on the lintel of the houses in which they shall eat.

8 T hey must eat the meat that same night, made ready over a fire. They will eat it with bread made without yeast and with bitter plants.

They shall eat the flesh that night roasted; with unleavened bread and bitter herbs they shall eat it.

9 D o not eat any of it if it is not cooked or if it is made ready by boiling. But cook it over a fire, its head, legs and inside parts.

Eat not of it raw nor boiled at all with water, but roasted—its head, its legs, and its inner parts.

10 D o not save any of it until morning. Burn with fire whatever is left of it before morning.

You shall let nothing of the meat remain until the morning; and the bones and unedible bits which remain of it until morning you shall burn with fire.

11 Eat it with your shoes on your feet and your walking stick in your hand. And you must eat it in a hurry. It is the time the Lord will pass over.

And you shall eat it thus: your loins girded, your shoes on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and you shall eat it in haste. It is the Lord’s Passover.

12 F or I will go through the land of Egypt on that night. And I will kill all the first-born in the land of Egypt, both man and animal. I will punish all the gods of Egypt. I am the Lord.

For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night and will smite all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment. I am the Lord.

13 B ut the blood will mark for you the houses where you live. When I see the blood I will pass over you. And no trouble will come upon you to destroy you when I punish the land of Egypt.

The blood shall be for a token or sign to you upon the houses where you are, when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and no plague shall be upon you to destroy you when I smite the land of Egypt.

14 This day will be for you to remember. You must remember it by having a special supper in honor to the Lord. All of you must keep it as a law forever.

And this day shall be to you for a memorial. You shall keep it as a feast to the Lord throughout your generations, keep it as an ordinance forever.

15 S even days you must eat bread made without yeast. On the first day you must get all the yeast out of your houses. Whoever eats anything with yeast from the first day until the seventh day will be taken away from Israel.

seven days shall you eat unleavened bread; even the first day you shall put away leaven out of your houses; for whoever eats leavened bread from the first day until the seventh day, that person shall be cut off from Israel.

16 O n the first day you must have a holy meeting of the people, and another holy meeting on the seventh day. Do no work at all on these days, except to get ready what every person must eat. You may do only that.

On the first day you shall hold a solemn and holy assembly, and on the seventh day there shall be a solemn and holy assembly; no kind of work shall be done in them, save that which every person must eat—that only may be done by you.

17 Y ou must have the special supper of bread without yeast. For on this same day I brought your family groups out of the land of Egypt. So all of you must remember this day as a law forever.

And you shall observe the Feast of Unleavened Bread, for on this very day have I brought your hosts out of the land of Egypt; therefore shall you observe this day throughout your generations as an ordinance forever.

18 In the first month, from the evening of the fourteenth day until the evening of the twenty-first day, you must eat bread made without yeast.

In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month at evening, you shall eat unleavened bread until the twenty-first day of the month at evening.

19 T here must be no yeast found in your houses for seven days. For whoever eats anything with yeast, that person, stranger or born in the land, will be cut off from the people of Israel.

Seven days no leaven shall be found in your houses; whoever eats what is leavened shall be excluded from the congregation of Israel, whether a stranger or native-born.

20 D o not eat anything with yeast. You must eat bread made without yeast in all your homes.”

You shall eat nothing leavened; in all your dwellings you shall eat unleavened bread.

21 T hen Moses called for all the leaders of Israel. He said to them, “Go and choose lambs for your families, and kill the Passover lamb.

Then Moses called for all the elders of Israel, and said to them, Go forth, select and take a lamb according to your families and kill the Passover.

22 T ake a small branch and put it in the blood in the pot. Spread some of the blood on the wood pieces on the top and sides of the door. Then none of you go outside the door of his house until morning.

And you shall take a bunch of hyssop, dip it in the blood in the basin, and touch the lintel above the door and the two side posts with the blood; and none of you shall go out of his house until morning.

23 F or the Lord will pass through to kill the Egyptians. But when He sees the blood around your door, the Lord will pass over the door. He will not let the one who destroys come into your houses to kill you.

For the Lord will pass through to slay the Egyptians; and when He sees the blood upon the lintel and the two side posts, the Lord will pass over the door and will not allow the destroyer to come into your houses to slay you.

24 Y ou must remember this as a law for you and your children forever.

You shall observe this rite for an ordinance to you and to your sons forever.

25 Y ou must remember this special time when you go to the land that the Lord has promised to give you.

When you come to the land which the Lord will give you, as He has promised, you shall keep this service.

26 W hen your children ask you, ‘What does this special time mean to you?’

When your children shall say to you, What do you mean by this service?

27 y ou will say, ‘It is a Passover gift to the Lord. Because He passed over the houses of the people of Israel in Egypt. He killed the Egyptians but saved our homes.’” And the people bowed to the ground and worshiped.

You shall say, It is the sacrifice of the Lord’s Passover, for He passed over the houses of the Israelites in Egypt when He slew the Egyptians but spared our houses. And the people bowed their heads and worshiped.

28 T hen the people of Israel went and did what the Lord had told Moses and Aaron. Death of the First-Born

The Israelites went and, as the Lord had commanded Moses and Aaron, so they did.

29 A t midnight the Lord killed all the first-born in the land of Egypt, from the first-born of Pharaoh who sat on the throne to the first-born of the one who was held in prison, and all the first-born of the cattle.

At midnight the Lord slew every firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sat on his throne to the firstborn of the prisoner in the dungeon, and all the firstborn of the livestock.

30 P haraoh got up in the night, he and his servants and all the Egyptians. And there was a loud cry in Egypt. For there was no home where there was not someone dead. Children of Israel Leave Egypt

Pharaoh rose up in the night, he, all his servants, and all the Egyptians; and there was a great cry in Egypt, for there was not a house where there was not one dead.

31 T hen Pharaoh called for Moses and Aaron at night. He said, “Get up and go away from my people, both you and the people of Israel. Go and worship the Lord, as you have said.

He called for Moses and Aaron by night, and said, Rise up, get out from among my people, both you and the Israelites; and go, serve the Lord, as you said.

32 T ake your flocks and your cattle, as you have said, and go. And pray that good will come to me also.”

Also take your flocks and your herds, as you have said, and be gone! And bless me also.

33 T he Egyptians were trying to make the people hurry out of the land. For they said, “We will all be dead.”

The Egyptians were urgent with the people to depart, that they might send them out of the land in haste; for they said, We are all dead men.

34 S o the people took their dough before yeast had been added. They tied their dough pots in their clothes on their shoulders.

The people took their dough before it was leavened, their kneading bowls being bound up in their clothes on their shoulders.

35 T he people of Israel had done what Moses had said. They had asked the Egyptians for things made of silver and gold and for clothes.

The Israelites did according to the word of Moses; and they asked of the Egyptians jewels of silver and of gold, and clothing.

36 A nd the Lord had given the people favor in the eyes of the Egyptians. So the Egyptians let them have whatever they asked for. And they took the best things of Egypt.

The Lord gave the people favor in the sight of the Egyptians, so that they gave them what they asked. And they stripped the Egyptians.

37 T he people of Israel traveled from Rameses to Succoth. There were about 600, 000 men on foot, and also the women and children.

The Israelites journeyed from Rameses to Succoth, about 600, 000 men on foot, besides women and children.

38 A nd a mixed group of people went with them, and very many flocks and cattle.

And a mixed multitude went also with them, and very much livestock, both flocks and herds.

39 T hey made the dough they had brought out of Egypt into loaves of bread without yeast. Yeast was not added to the dough because they had been sent out of Egypt and could not wait. They could not make ready any food for themselves.

They baked unleavened cakes of the dough which they brought from Egypt; it was not leavened because they were driven from Egypt and could not delay, nor had they prepared for themselves any food.

40 T he people of Israel had lived in Egypt 430 years.

Now the time the Israelites dwelt in Egypt was 430 years.

41 A t the end of 430 years, on that same day, all of the Lord’s people left Egypt.

At the end of the 430 years, even that very day, all the hosts of the Lord went out of Egypt.

42 I t was a night to be remembered for the Lord for having brought them out of the land of Egypt. This night is for the Lord, to be remembered by all the people of Israel for all time. How the Passover Supper Should Be Eaten

It was a night of watching unto the Lord and to be much observed for bringing them out of Egypt; this same night of watching unto the Lord is to be observed by all the Israelites throughout their generations.

43 T he Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “This is the Law of the Passover. No stranger may eat of it.

The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, This is the ordinance of the Passover: No foreigner shall eat of it;

44 B ut every servant who is bought with money may eat of it, only after he has gone through the religious act of becoming a Jew.

But every man’s servant who is bought for money, when you have circumcised him, then may he eat of it.

45 A stranger or paid servant may not eat of it.

A foreigner or hired servant shall not eat of it.

46 I t must be eaten in one house. You must not carry any of the meat outside the house. And you must not break a bone of it.

In one house shall it be eaten; you shall not carry any of the flesh outside the house; neither shall you break a bone of it.

47 A ll the people of Israel must remember this.

All the congregation of Israel shall keep it.

48 B ut when a stranger staying with you wants to share in this special supper to the Lord, let all his men and boys go through the religious act of becoming a Jew. Then let him come near to share in the special supper. He will be like one who is born in the land. But no person who has not gone through the religious act may eat of it.

When a stranger sojourning with you wishes to keep the Passover to the Lord, let all his males be circumcised, and then let him come near and keep it; and he shall be as one that is born in the land. But no uncircumcised person shall eat of it.

49 T he same law is for the one who is born in the land and for the stranger who stays among you.”

There shall be one law for the native-born and for the stranger or foreigner who sojourns among you.

50 T hen all the people of Israel did just as the Lord had told Moses and Aaron.

Thus did all the Israelites; as the Lord commanded Moses and Aaron, so did they.

51 O n that same day the Lord brought the people of Israel out of the land of Egypt by their family groups.

And on that very day the Lord brought the Israelites out of the land of Egypt by their hosts.
