1 A nd when the day of Pentecost was now come, they were all together in one place.

And when the day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all assembled together in one place,

2 A nd suddenly there came from heaven a sound as of the rushing of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.

When suddenly there came a sound from heaven like the rushing of a violent tempest blast, and it filled the whole house in which they were sitting.

3 A nd there appeared unto them tongues parting asunder, like as of fire; and it sat upon each one of them.

And there appeared to them tongues resembling fire, which were separated and distributed and which settled on each one of them.

4 A nd they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

And they were all filled (diffused throughout their souls) with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other (different, foreign) languages (tongues), as the Spirit kept giving them clear and loud expression.

5 N ow there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, from every nation under heaven.

Now there were then residing in Jerusalem Jews, devout and God-fearing men from every country under heaven.

6 A nd when this sound was heard, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speaking in his own language.

And when this sound was heard, the multitude came together and they were astonished and bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in his own dialect.

7 A nd they were all amazed and marvelled, saying, Behold, are not all these that speak Galilaeans?

And they were beside themselves with amazement, saying, Are not all these who are talking Galileans?

8 A nd how hear we, every man in our own language wherein we were born?

Then how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own (particular) dialect to which we were born?

9 P arthians and Medes and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, in Judaea and Cappadocia, in Pontus and Asia,

Parthians and Medes and Elamites and inhabitants of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,

10 i n Phrygia and Pamphylia, in Egypt and the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and sojourners from Rome, both Jews and proselytes,

Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and the transient residents from Rome, both Jews and the proselytes,

11 C retans and Arabians, we hear them speaking in our tongues the mighty works of God.

Cretans and Arabians too—we all hear them speaking in our own native tongues the mighty works of God!

12 A nd they were all amazed, and were perplexed, saying one to another, What meaneth this?

And all were beside themselves with amazement and were puzzled and bewildered, saying one to another, What can this mean?

13 B ut others mocking said, They are filled with new wine.

But others made a joke of it and derisively said, They are simply drunk and full of sweet wine.

14 B ut Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and spake forth unto them, saying, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and give ear unto my words.

But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them: You Jews and all you residents of Jerusalem, let this be to you so that you will know and understand; listen closely to what I have to say.

15 F or these are not drunken, as ye suppose; seeing it is but the third hour of the day.

For these men are not drunk, as you imagine, for it is the third hour (about 9: 00 a. m.) of the day;

16 b ut this is that which hath been spoken through the prophet Joel:

But this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel:

17 A nd it shall be in the last days, saith God, I will pour forth of my Spirit upon all flesh: And your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, And your young men shall see visions, And your old men shall dream dreams:

And it shall come to pass in the last days, God declares, that I will pour out of My Spirit upon all mankind, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy '> telling forth the divine counsels] and your young men shall see visions ( divinely granted appearances), and your old men shall dream '> divinely suggested] dreams.

18 Y ea and on my servants and on my handmaidens in those days Will I pour forth of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy.

Yes, and on My menservants also and on My maidservants in those days I will pour out of My Spirit, and they shall prophesy '> telling forth the divine counsels and predicting future events pertaining especially to God’s kingdom].

19 A nd I will show wonders in the heaven above, And signs on the earth beneath; Blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke:

And I will show wonders in the sky above and signs on the earth beneath, blood and fire and smoking vapor;

20 T he sun shall be turned into darkness, And the moon into blood, Before the day of the Lord come, That great and notable day.

The sun shall be turned into darkness and the moon into blood before the obvious day of the Lord comes—that great and notable and conspicuous and renowned.

21 A nd it shall be, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.

And it shall be that whoever shall call upon the name of the Lord '> invoking, adoring, and worshiping the Lord—Christ] shall be saved.

22 Y e men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God unto you by mighty works and wonders and signs which God did by him in the midst of you, even as ye yourselves know;

You men of Israel, listen to what I have to say: Jesus of Nazareth, a Man accredited and pointed out and shown forth and commended and attested to you by God by the mighty works and wonders and signs which God worked through Him in your midst, as you yourselves know—

23 h im, being delivered up by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye by the hand of lawless men did crucify and slay:

This Jesus, when delivered up according to the definite and fixed purpose and settled plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and put out of the way by the hands of lawless and wicked men.

24 w hom God raised up, having loosed the pangs of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it.

God raised Him up, liberating Him from the pangs of death, seeing that it was not possible for Him to continue to be controlled or retained by it.

25 F or David saith concerning him, I beheld the Lord always before my face; For he is on my right hand, that I should not be moved:

For David says in regard to Him, I saw the Lord constantly before me, for He is at my right hand that I may not be shaken or overthrown or cast down.

26 T herefore my heart was glad, and my tongue rejoiced; Moreover my flesh also shall dwell in hope:

Therefore my heart rejoiced and my tongue exulted exceedingly; moreover, my flesh also will dwell in hope.

27 B ecause thou wilt not leave my soul unto Hades, Neither wilt thou give thy Holy One to see corruption.

For You will not abandon my soul, leaving it helpless in Hades (the state of departed spirits), nor let Your Holy One know decay or see destruction.

28 T hou madest known unto me the ways of life; Thou shalt make me full of gladness with thy countenance.

You have made known to me the ways of life; You will enrapture me with and in Your presence.

29 B rethren, I may say unto you freely of the patriarch David, that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us unto this day.

Brethren, it is permitted me to tell you confidently and with freedom concerning the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day.

30 B eing therefore a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins he would set one upon his throne;

Being however a prophet, and knowing that God had sealed to him with an oath that He would set one of his descendants on his throne,

31 h e foreseeing this spake of the resurrection of the Christ, that neither was he left unto Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption.

He, foreseeing this, spoke of the resurrection of the Christ (the Messiah) that He was not deserted and left in Hades (the state of departed spirits), nor did His body know decay or see destruction.

32 T his Jesus did God raise up, whereof we all are witnesses.

This Jesus God raised up, and of that all we are witnesses.

33 B eing therefore by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he hath poured forth this, which ye see and hear.

Being therefore lifted high by and to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit, He has made this outpouring which you yourselves both see and hear.

34 F or David ascended not into the heavens: but he saith himself, The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand,

For David did not ascend into the heavens; yet he himself says, The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at My right hand and share My throne

35 T ill I make thine enemies the footstool of thy feet.

Until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.

36 L et all the house of Israel therefore know assuredly, that God hath made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom ye crucified.

Therefore let the whole house of Israel recognize beyond all doubt and acknowledge assuredly that God has made Him both Lord and Christ (the Messiah)—this Jesus Whom you crucified.

37 N ow when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and the rest of the apostles, Brethren, what shall we do?

Now when they heard this they were stung (cut) to the heart, and they said to Peter and the rest of the apostles (special messengers), Brethren, what shall we do?

38 A nd Peter said unto them, Repent ye, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ unto the remission of your sins; and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

And Peter answered them, Repent (change your views and purpose to accept the will of God in your inner selves instead of rejecting it) and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of and release from your sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

39 F or to you is the promise, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call unto him.

For the promise is to and for you and your children, and to and for all that are far away, to and for as many as the Lord our God invites and bids to come to Himself.

40 A nd with many other words he testified, and exhorted them, saying, Save yourselves from this crooked generation.

And solemnly and earnestly witnessed (testified) and admonished (exhorted) with much more continuous speaking and warned (reproved, advised, encouraged) them, saying, Be saved from this crooked (perverse, wicked, unjust) generation.

41 T hey then that received his word were baptized: and there were added unto them in that day about three thousand souls.

Therefore those who accepted and welcomed his message were baptized, and there were added that day about 3, 000 souls.

42 A nd they continued stedfastly in the apostles' teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread and the prayers.

And they steadfastly persevered, devoting themselves constantly to the instruction and fellowship of the apostles, to the breaking of bread and prayers.

43 A nd fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles.

And a sense of awe (reverential fear) came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were performed through the apostles (the special messengers).

44 A nd all that believed were together, and had all things common;

And all who believed (who adhered to and trusted in and relied on Jesus Christ) were united and they had everything in common;

45 a nd they sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all, according as any man had need.

And they sold their possessions (both their landed property and their movable goods) and distributed the price among all, according as any had need.

46 A nd day by day, continuing stedfastly with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread at home, they took their food with gladness and singleness of heart,

And day after day they regularly assembled in the temple with united purpose, and in their homes they broke bread. They partook of their food with gladness and simplicity and generous hearts,

47 p raising God, and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to them day by day those that were saved.

Constantly praising God and being in favor and goodwill with all the people; and the Lord kept adding daily those who were being saved.
