1 N ow the children of Israel after their number, to wit, the heads of fathers' houses and the captains of thousands and of hundreds, and their officers that served the king, in any matter of the courses which came in and went out month by month throughout all the months of the year-of every course were twenty and four thousand.

This is the list of the Israelites, the heads of fathers’ houses, the commanders of thousands and hundreds, and their officers who served the king in all matters of the divisions that came and went, month by month throughout the year, each division numbering 24, 000.

2 O ver the first course for the first month was Jashobeam the son of Zabdiel: and in his course were twenty and four thousand.

Over the first division for the first month was Jashobeam son of Zabdiel. In his division were 24, 000.

3 H e was of the children of Perez, the chief of all the captains of the host for the first month.

He was descended from Perez and was chief of all the commanders of the army for the first month.

4 A nd over the course of the second month was Dodai the Ahohite, and his course; and Mikloth the ruler: and in his course were twenty and four thousand.

Over the division for the second month was Dodai the Ahohite; and of his division Mikloth was the chief officer. In his division were 24, 000.

5 T he third captain of the host for the third month was Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada the priest, chief: and in his course were twenty and four thousand.

The third commander of the army for the third month was Benaiah son of Jehoiada the priest, as chief. In his division were 24, 000.

6 T his is that Benaiah, who was the mighty man of the thirty, and over the thirty: and of his course was Ammizabad his son.

This is the Benaiah who was a mighty man of the Thirty and over the Thirty; and in his division was Ammizabad his son.

7 T he fourth captain for the fourth month was Asahel the brother of Joab, and Zebadiah his son after him: and in his course were twenty and four thousand.

The fourth, for the fourth month, Asahel brother of Joab, and Zebadiah his son after him. In his division were 24, 000.

8 T he fifth captain for this fifth month was Shamhuth the Izrahite: and in his course were twenty and four thousand.

The fifth, for the fifth month, Shamhuth the Izrahite. In his division were 24, 000.

9 T he sixth captain for the sixth month was Ira the son of Ikkesh the Tekoite: and in his course were twenty and four thousand.

The sixth, for the sixth month, Ira son of Ikkesh the Tekoite. In his division were 24, 000.

10 T he seventh captain for the seventh month was Helez the Pelonite, of the children of Ephraim: and in his course were twenty and four thousand.

The seventh, for the seventh month, Helez the Pelonite, of the Ephraimites. In his division were 24, 000.

11 T he eighth captain for the eighth month was Sibbecai the Hushathite, of the Zerahites: and in his course were twenty and four thousand.

The eighth, for the eighth month, Sibbecai the Hushathite, of the Zarahites. In his division were 24, 000.

12 T he ninth captain for the ninth month was Abiezer the Anathothite, of the Benjamites: and in his course were twenty and four thousand.

The ninth, for the ninth month, Abiezer of Anathoth, a Benjamite. In his division were 24, 000.

13 T he tenth captain for the tenth month was Maharai the Netophathite, of the Zerahites: and in his course were twenty and four thousand.

The tenth, for the tenth month, Maharai from Netophah, of the Zerahites. In his division were 24, 000.

14 T he eleventh captain for the eleventh month was Benaiah the Pirathonite, of the children of Ephraim: and in his course were twenty and four thousand.

The eleventh, for the eleventh month, Benaiah the Pirathonite, of the sons of Ephraim. In his division were 24, 000.

15 T he twelfth captain for the twelfth month was Heldai the Netophathite, of Othniel: and in his course were twenty and four thousand.

The twelfth, for the twelfth month, Heldai the Netophathite, of Othniel. In his division were 24, 000.

16 F urthermore over the tribes of Israel: of the Reubenites was Eliezer the son of Zichri the ruler: of the Simeonites, Shephatiah the son of Maacah:

Also over the tribes of Israel: of the Reubenites: Eliezer son of Zichri was chief officer; of the Simeonites: Shephatiah son of Maachah;

17 o f Levi, Hashabiah the son of Kemuel: of Aaron, Zadok:

18 o f Judah, Elihu, one of the brethren of David: of Issachar, Omri the son of Michael:

Of Judah: Elihu, one of David’s brothers; of Issachar: Omri son of Michael;

19 o f Zebulun, Ishmaiah the son of Obadiah: of Naphtali, Jeremoth the son of Azriel:

Of Zebulun: Ishmaiah son of Obadiah; of Naphtali: Jerimoth son of Azriel;

20 o f the children of Ephraim, Hoshea the son of Azaziah: of the half-tribe of Manasseh, Joel the son of Pedaiah:

Of the Ephraimites: Hoshea son of Azaziah; of the half-tribe of Manasseh: Joel son of Pedaiah;

21 o f the half -tribe of Manasseh in Gilead, Iddo the son of Zechariah: of Benjamin, Jaasiel the son of Abner:

Of the half-tribe of Manasseh in Gilead: Iddo son of Zechariah; of Benjamin: Jaasiel son of Abner;

22 o f Dan, Azarel the son of Jeroham. These were the captains of the tribes of Israel.

Of Dan: Azarel son of Jeroham. These were the leaders of the tribes of Israel.

23 B ut David took not the number of them from twenty years old and under, because Jehovah had said he would increase Israel like to the stars of heaven.

But David did not number those under twenty years of age, for the Lord had promised to make Israel as the stars of the heavens.

24 J oab the son of Zeruiah began to number, but finished not; and there came wrath for this upon Israel; neither was the number put into the account in the chronicles of king David.

Joab son of Zeruiah began a census but did not finish, because the census brought wrath upon Israel, and the number was not recorded in the chronicles of King David.

25 A nd over the king's treasures was Azmaveth the son of Adiel: and over the treasures in the fields, in the cities, and in the villages, and in the castles, was Jonathan the son of Uzziah:

Over the king’s treasuries was Azmaveth son of Adiel; and over the treasuries in the country, cities, villages, and towers or forts was Jonathan son of Uzziah;

26 A nd over them that did the work of the field for tillage of the ground was Ezri the son of Chelub:

Over those who did the work of the field of tilling the soil was Ezri son of Chelub;

27 a nd over the vineyards was Shimei the Ramathite: and over the increase of the vineyards for the wine-cellars was Zabdi the Shiphmite:

Over the vineyards was Shimei the Ramathite; over the produce of the vineyards for the wine cellars, Zabdi the Shiphmite;

28 a nd over the olive-trees and the sycomore-trees that were in the lowland was Baal-hanan the Gederite: and over the cellars of oil was Joash:

Over the olive and sycamore trees in the low plains, Baal-hanan the Gederite; over the stores of oil, Joash;

29 a nd over the herds that fed in Sharon was Shitrai the Sharonite: and over the herds that were in the valleys was Shaphat the son of Adlai:

Over the herds pasturing in Sharon, Shitrai the Sharonite; over the herds in the valleys, Shaphat son of Adlai;

30 a nd over the camels was Obil the Ishmaelite: and over the asses was Jehdeiah the Meronothite: and over the flocks was Jaziz the Hagrite.

Over the camels, Obil the Ishmaelite; over the she-donkeys, Jehdeiah the Meronothite;

31 A ll these were the rulers of the substance which was king David's.

And over the flocks, Jaziz the Hagrite. All these were stewards of King David’s property.

32 A lso Jonathan, David's uncle, was a counsellor, a man of understanding, and a scribe: and Jehiel the son of Hachmoni was with the king's sons:

Also Jonathan, David’s uncle, was a counselor, a wise man and a scribe; he and Jehiel son of Hachmoni attended the king’s sons.

33 A nd Ahithophel was the king's counsellor: and Hushai the Archite was the king's friend:

Ahithophel was the king’s counselor; Hushai the Archite was the king’s companion and friend.

34 a nd after Ahithophel was Jehoiada the son of Benaiah, and Abiathar: and the captain of the king's host was Joab.

Ahithophel was succeeded by Jehoiada son of Benaiah and by Abiathar. Joab was the commander of the king’s army.
