1 T ake heed that ye do not your righteousness before men, to be seen of them: else ye have no reward with your Father who is in heaven.

Take care not to do your good deeds publicly or before men, in order to be seen by them; otherwise you will have no reward '> reserved for and awaiting you] with and from your Father Who is in heaven.

2 W hen therefore thou doest alms, sound not a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have received their reward.

Thus, whenever you give to the poor, do not blow a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites in the synagogues and in the streets like to do, that they may be recognized and honored and praised by men. Truly I tell you, they have their reward in full already.

3 B ut when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth:

But when you give to charity, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,

4 t hat thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father who seeth in secret shall recompense thee.

So that your deeds of charity may be in secret; and your Father Who sees in secret will reward you openly.

5 A nd when ye pray, ye shall not be as the hypocrites: for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have received their reward.

Also when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by people. Truly I tell you, they have their reward in full already.

6 B ut thou, when thou prayest, enter into thine inner chamber, and having shut thy door, pray to thy Father who is in secret, and thy Father who seeth in secret shall recompense thee.

But when you pray, go into your private room, and, closing the door, pray to your Father, Who is in secret; and your Father, Who sees in secret, will reward you in the open.

7 A nd in praying use not vain repetitions, as the Gentiles do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.

And when you pray, do not heap up phrases (multiply words, repeating the same ones over and over) as the Gentiles do, for they think they will be heard for their much speaking.

8 B e not therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.

Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.

9 A fter this manner therefore pray ye. Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

Pray, therefore, like this: Our Father Who is in heaven, hallowed (kept holy) be Your name.

10 T hy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so on earth.

Your kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

11 G ive us this day our daily bread.

Give us this day our daily bread.

12 A nd forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.

And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven ( left, remitted, and let go of the debts, and have given up resentment against) our debtors.

13 A nd bring us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

And lead (bring) us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

14 F or if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.

For if you forgive people their trespasses '> reckless and willful sins, leaving them, letting them go, and giving up resentment], your heavenly Father will also forgive you.

15 B ut if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

But if you do not forgive others their trespasses '> reckless and willful sins, leaving them, letting them go, and giving up resentment], neither will your Father forgive you your trespasses.

16 M oreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may be seen of men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have received their reward.

And whenever you are fasting, do not look gloomy and sour and dreary like the hypocrites, for they put on a dismal countenance, that their fasting may be apparent to and seen by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full already.

17 B ut thou, when thou fastest, anoint thy head, and wash thy face;

But when you fast, perfume your head and wash your face,

18 t hat thou be not seen of men to fast, but of thy Father who is in secret: and thy Father, who seeth in secret, shall recompense thee.

So that your fasting may not be noticed by men but by your Father, Who sees in secret; and your Father, Who sees in secret, will reward you in the open.

19 L ay not up for yourselves treasures upon the earth, where moth and rust consume, and where thieves break through and steal:

Do not gather and heap up and store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust and worm consume and destroy, and where thieves break through and steal.

20 b ut lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth consume, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:

But gather and heap up and store for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust nor worm consume and destroy, and where thieves do not break through and steal;

21 f or where thy treasure is, there will thy heart be also.

For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

22 T he lamp of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.

The eye is the lamp of the body. So if your eye is sound, your entire body will be full of light.

23 B ut if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is the darkness!

But if your eye is unsound, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the very light in you '> conscience] is darkened, how dense is that darkness!

24 N o man can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will stand by and be devoted to the one and despise and be against the other. You cannot serve God and mammon ( deceitful riches, money, possessions, or whatever is trusted in).

25 T herefore I say unto you, be not anxious for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than the food, and the body than the raiment?

Therefore I tell you, stop being perpetually uneasy (anxious and worried) about your life, what you shall eat or what you shall drink; or about your body, what you shall put on. Is not life greater than food, and the body than clothing?

26 B ehold the birds of the heaven, that they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; and your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are not ye of much more value then they?

Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father keeps feeding them. Are you not worth much more than they?

27 A nd which of you by being anxious can add one cubit unto the measure of his life?

And who of you by worrying and being anxious can add one unit of measure (cubit) to his stature or to the span of his life?

28 A nd why are ye anxious concerning raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin:

And why should you be anxious about clothes? Consider the lilies of the field and learn thoroughly how they grow; they neither toil nor spin.

29 y et I say unto you, that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

Yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his magnificence (excellence, dignity, and grace) was not arrayed like one of these.

30 B ut if God doth so clothe the grass of the field, which to-day is, and to-morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?

But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and green and tomorrow is tossed into the furnace, will He not much more surely clothe you, O you of little faith?

31 B e not therefore anxious, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?

Therefore do not worry and be anxious, saying, What are we going to have to eat? or, What are we going to have to drink? or, What are we going to have to wear?

32 F or after all these things do the Gentiles seek; for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.

For the Gentiles (heathen) wish for and crave and diligently seek all these things, and your heavenly Father knows well that you need them all.

33 B ut seek ye first his kingdom, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

But seek ( aim at and strive after) first of all His kingdom and His righteousness ( His way of doing and being right), and then all these things taken together will be given you besides.

34 B e not therefore anxious for the morrow: for the morrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

So do not worry or be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will have worries and anxieties of its own. Sufficient for each day is its own trouble.
