1 A wise son heareth his father’s instruction: but a scorner heareth not rebuke.

O filho sábio ouve a instrução do pai; mas o escarnecedor não escuta a repreensão.

2 A man shall eat good by the fruit of his mouth: but the soul of the transgressors shall eat violence.

Do fruto da boca o homem come o bem; mas o apetite dos prevaricadores alimenta-se da violência.

3 H e that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life: but he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction.

O que guarda a sua boca preserva a sua vida; mas o que muito abre os seus lábios traz sobre si a ruína.

4 T he soul of the sluggard desireth, and hath nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat.

O preguiçoso deseja, e coisa nenhuma alcança; mas o desejo do diligente será satisfeito.

5 A righteous man hateth lying: but a wicked man is loathsome, and cometh to shame.

O justo odeia a palavra mentirosa, mas o ímpio se faz odioso e se cobre de vergonha.

6 R ighteousness keepeth him that is upright in the way: but wickedness overthroweth the sinner.

A justiça guarda ao que é reto no seu caminho; mas a perversidade transtorna o pecador.

7 T here is that maketh himself rich, yet hath nothing: there is that maketh himself poor, yet hath great riches.

Há quem se faça rico, não tendo coisa alguma; e quem se faça pobre, tendo grande riqueza.

8 T he ransom of a man’s life are his riches: but the poor heareth not rebuke.

O resgate da vida do homem são as suas riquezas; mas o pobre não tem meio de se resgatar.

9 T he light of the righteous rejoiceth: but the lamp of the wicked shall be put out.

A luz dos justos alegra; porem a lâmpada dos impios se apagará.

10 O nly by pride cometh contention: but with the well advised is wisdom.

Da soberba só provém a contenda; mas com os que se aconselham se acha a sabedoria.

11 W ealth gotten by vanity shall be diminished: but he that gathereth by labour shall increase.

A riqueza adquirida

12 H ope deferred maketh the heart sick: but when the desire cometh, it is a tree of life.

A esperança adiada entristece o coração; mas o desejo cumprido é árvore devida.

13 W hoso despiseth the word shall be destroyed: but he that feareth the commandment shall be rewarded.

O que despreza a palavra traz sobre si a destruição; mas o que teme o mandamento será galardoado.

14 T he law of the wise is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death.

O ensino do sábio é uma fonte devida para desviar dos laços da morte.

15 G ood understanding giveth favour: but the way of transgressors is hard.

O bom senso alcança favor; mas o caminho dos prevaricadores é aspero:

16 E very prudent man dealeth with knowledge: but a fool layeth open his folly.

Em tudo o homem prudente procede com conhecimento; mas o tolo espraia a sua insensatez.

17 A wicked messenger falleth into mischief: but a faithful ambassador is health.

O mensageiro perverso faz cair no mal; mas o embaixador fiel traz saúde.

18 P overty and shame shall be to him that refuseth instruction: but he that regardeth reproof shall be honoured.

Pobreza e afronta virão ao que rejeita a correção; mas o que guarda a repreensão será honrado.

19 T he desire accomplished is sweet to the soul: but it is abomination to fools to depart from evil.

O desejo que se cumpre deleita a alma; mas apartar-se do ma e abominação para os tolos.

20 H e that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.

Quem anda com os sábios será sábio; mas o companheiro dos tolos sofre aflição.

21 E vil pursueth sinners: but to the righteous good shall be repayed.

O mal persegue os pecadores; mas os justos são galardoados com o bem.

22 A good man leaveth an inheritance to his children’s children: and the wealth of the sinner is laid up for the just.

O homem de bem deixa uma herança aos filhos de seus filhos; a riqueza do pecador, porém, é reservada para o justo.

23 M uch food is in the tillage of the poor: but there is that is destroyed for want of judgment.

Abundância de mantimento há, na lavoura do pobre; mas se perde por falta de juízo.

24 H e that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes.

Aquele que poupa a vara aborrece a seu filho; mas quem o ama, a seu tempo o castiga.

25 T he righteous eateth to the satisfying of his soul: but the belly of the wicked shall want.

O justo come e fica satisfeito; mas o apetite dos ímpios nunca se satisfaz.
