1 D epois disso Moisés e Arão foram falar com o faraó e disseram: “Assim diz o Senhor, o Deus de Israel: ‘Deixe o meu povo ir para celebrar-me uma festa no deserto’”.

And afterward Moses and Aaron went in, and told Pharaoh, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, Let my people go, that they may hold a feast unto me in the wilderness.

2 O faraó respondeu: “Quem é o Senhor, para que eu lhe obedeça e deixe Israel sair? Não conheço o Senhor, e não deixarei Israel sair”.

And Pharaoh said, Who is the Lord, that I should obey his voice to let Israel go? I know not the Lord, neither will I let Israel go.

3 E les insistiram: “O Deus dos hebreus veio ao nosso encontro. Agora, permite-nos caminhar três dias no deserto, para oferecer sacrifícios ao Senhor, o nosso Deus; caso contrário, ele nos atingirá com pragas ou com a espada”.

And they said, The God of the Hebrews hath met with us: let us go, we pray thee, three days' journey into the desert, and sacrifice unto the Lord our God; lest he fall upon us with pestilence, or with the sword.

4 M as o rei do Egito respondeu: “Moisés e Arão, por que vocês estão fazendo o povo interromper suas tarefas? Voltem ao trabalho!”

And the king of Egypt said unto them, Wherefore do ye, Moses and Aaron, let the people from their works? get you unto your burdens.

5 E acrescentou: “Essa gente já é tão numerosa, e vocês ainda os fazem parar de trabalhar!”

And Pharaoh said, Behold, the people of the land now are many, and ye make them rest from their burdens.

6 N o mesmo dia o faraó deu a seguinte ordem aos feitores e capatazes responsáveis pelo povo:

And Pharaoh commanded the same day the taskmasters of the people, and their officers, saying,

7 “ Não forneçam mais palha ao povo para fazer tijolos, como faziam antes. Eles que tratem de ajuntar palha!

Ye shall no more give the people straw to make brick, as heretofore: let them go and gather straw for themselves.

8 M as exijam que continuem a fazer a mesma quantidade de tijolos; não reduzam a cota. São preguiçosos, e por isso estão clamando: ‘Iremos oferecer sacrifícios ao nosso Deus’.

And the tale of the bricks, which they did make heretofore, ye shall lay upon them; ye shall not diminish ought thereof: for they be idle; therefore they cry, saying, Let us go and sacrifice to our God.

9 A umentem a carga de trabalho dessa gente para que cumpram suas tarefas e não dêem atenção a mentiras”.

Let there more work be laid upon the men, that they may labour therein; and let them not regard vain words.

10 O s feitores e os capatazes foram dizer ao povo: “Assim diz o faraó: ‘Já não lhes darei palha.

And the taskmasters of the people went out, and their officers, and they spake to the people, saying, Thus saith Pharaoh, I will not give you straw.

11 S aiam e recolham-na onde puderem achá-la, pois o trabalho de vocês em nada será reduzido’”.

Go ye, get you straw where ye can find it: yet not ought of your work shall be diminished.

12 O povo, então, espalhou-se por todo o Egito, a fim de ajuntar restolho em lugar da palha.

So the people were scattered abroad throughout all the land of Egypt to gather stubble instead of straw.

13 E nquanto isso, os feitores os pressionavam, dizendo: “Completem a mesma tarefa diária que lhes foi exigida quando tinham palha”.

And the taskmasters hasted them, saying, Fulfil your works, your daily tasks, as when there was straw.

14 O s capatazes israelitas indicados pelos feitores do faraó eram espancados e interrogados: “Por que não completaram ontem e hoje a mesma cota de tijolos dos dias anteriores?”

And the officers of the children of Israel, which Pharaoh's taskmasters had set over them, were beaten, and demanded, Wherefore have ye not fulfilled your task in making brick both yesterday and to day, as heretofore?

15 E ntão os capatazes israelitas foram apelar para o faraó: “Por que tratas os teus servos dessa maneira?

Then the officers of the children of Israel came and cried unto Pharaoh, saying, Wherefore dealest thou thus with thy servants?

16 N ós, teus servos, não recebemos palha, e, contudo, nos dizem: ‘Façam tijolos!’ Os teus servos têm sido espancados, mas a culpa é do teu próprio povo ”.

There is no straw given unto thy servants, and they say to us, Make brick: and, behold, thy servants are beaten; but the fault is in thine own people.

17 R espondeu o faraó: “Preguiçosos é o que vocês são! Preguiçosos! Por isso andam dizendo: ‘Iremos oferecer sacrifícios ao Senhor ’.

But he said, Ye are idle, ye are idle: therefore ye say, Let us go and do sacrifice to the Lord.

18 A gora, voltem ao trabalho. Vocês não receberão palha alguma! Continuem a produzir a cota integral de tijolos!”

Go therefore now, and work; for there shall no straw be given you, yet shall ye deliver the tale of bricks.

19 O s capatazes israelitas se viram em dificuldade quando lhes disseram que não poderiam reduzir a quantidade de tijolos exigida a cada dia.

And the officers of the children of Israel did see that they were in evil case, after it was said, Ye shall not minish ought from your bricks of your daily task.

20 A o saírem da presença do faraó, encontraram-se com Moisés e Arão, que estavam à espera deles,

And they met Moses and Aaron, who stood in the way, as they came forth from Pharaoh:

21 e lhes disseram: “O Senhor os examine e os julgue! Vocês atraíram o ódio do faraó e dos seus conselheiros sobre nós, e lhes puseram nas mãos uma espada para que nos matem”. Deus Anuncia Libertação

And they said unto them, The Lord look upon you, and judge; because ye have made our savour to be abhorred in the eyes of Pharaoh, and in the eyes of his servants, to put a sword in their hand to slay us.

22 M oisés voltou-se para o Senhor e perguntou: “Senhor, por que maltrataste este povo? Afinal, por que me enviaste?

And Moses returned unto the Lord, and said, Lord, wherefore hast thou so evil entreated this people? why is it that thou hast sent me?

23 D esde que me dirigi ao faraó para falar em teu nome, ele tem maltratado este povo, e tu de modo algum libertaste o teu povo!”

For since I came to Pharaoh to speak in thy name, he hath done evil to this people; neither hast thou delivered thy people at all.
