Galatians 2 ~ Galatians 2

1 T hen after an interval of fourteen years I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, taking Titus along also.

Then after a lapse of fourteen years I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, taking Titus also with;

2 I t was because of a revelation that I went up; and I submitted to them the gospel which I preach among the Gentiles, but I did so in private to those who were of reputation, for fear that I might be running, or had run, in vain.

and I went up according to revelation, and I laid before them the glad tidings which I preach among the nations, but privately to those conspicuous, lest in any way I run or had run in vain;

3 B ut not even Titus, who was with me, though he was a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised.

(but neither was Titus, who was with me, being a Greek, compelled to be circumcised;)

4 B ut it was because of the false brethren secretly brought in, who had sneaked in to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, in order to bring us into bondage.

and on account of the false brethren brought in surreptitiously, who came in surreptitiously to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into bondage;

5 B ut we did not yield in subjection to them for even an hour, so that the truth of the gospel would remain with you.

to whom we yielded in subjection not even for an hour, that the truth of the glad tidings might remain with you.

6 B ut from those who were of high reputation (what they were makes no difference to me; God shows no partiality)—well, those who were of reputation contributed nothing to me.

But from those who were conspicuous as being somewhat—whatsoever they were, it makes no difference to me: God does not accept man's person; for to me those who were conspicuous communicated nothing;

7 B ut on the contrary, seeing that I had been entrusted with the gospel to the uncircumcised, just as Peter had been to the circumcised

but, on the contrary, seeing that the glad tidings of the uncircumcision were confided to me, even as to Peter that of the circumcision,

8 ( for He who effectually worked for Peter in his apostleship to the circumcised effectually worked for me also to the Gentiles),

(for he that wrought in Peter for apostleship of the circumcision wrought also in me towards the Gentiles,)

9 a nd recognizing the grace that had been given to me, James and Cephas and John, who were reputed to be pillars, gave to me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship, so that we might go to the Gentiles and they to the circumcised.

and recognising the grace given to me, James and Cephas and John, who were conspicuous as being pillars, gave to me and Barnabas right hands of fellowship, that we to the nations, and they to the circumcision;

10 T hey only asked us to remember the poor— the very thing I also was eager to do. Peter (Cephas) Opposed by Paul

only that we should remember the poor, which same thing also I was diligent to do.

11 B ut when Cephas came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he stood condemned.

But when Peter came to Antioch, I withstood him to face, because he was to be condemned:

12 F or prior to the coming of certain men from James, he used to eat with the Gentiles; but when they came, he began to withdraw and hold himself aloof, fearing the party of the circumcision.

for before that certain came from James, he ate with the nations; but when they came, he drew back and separated himself, fearing those of circumcision;

13 T he rest of the Jews joined him in hypocrisy, with the result that even Barnabas was carried away by their hypocrisy.

and the rest of the Jews also played the same dissembling part with him; so that even Barnabas was carried away too by their dissimulation.

14 B ut when I saw that they were not straightforward about the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas in the presence of all, “If you, being a Jew, live like the Gentiles and not like the Jews, how is it that you compel the Gentiles to live like Jews?

But when I saw that they do not walk straightforwardly, according to the truth of the glad tidings, I said to Peter before all, If thou, being a Jew, livest as the nations and not as the Jews, how dost thou compel the nations to Judaize?

15 We are Jews by nature and not sinners from among the Gentiles;

We, Jews by nature, and not sinners of nations,

16 n evertheless knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the Law but through faith in Christ Jesus, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, so that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the Law; since by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified.

but knowing that a man is not justified on the principle of works of law but by the faith of Jesus Christ, we also have believed on Christ Jesus, that we might be justified on the principle of faith of Christ; and not of works of law; because on the principle of works of law no flesh shall be justified.

17 B ut if, while seeking to be justified in Christ, we ourselves have also been found sinners, is Christ then a minister of sin? May it never be!

Now if in seeking to be justified in Christ we also have been found sinners, then Christ minister of sin? Far be the thought.

18 F or if I rebuild what I have once destroyed, I prove myself to be a transgressor.

For if the things I have thrown down, these I build again, I constitute myself a transgressor.

19 F or through the Law I died to the Law, so that I might live to God.

For I, through law, have died to law, that I may live to God.

20 I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.

I am crucified with Christ, and no longer live, I, but Christ lives in me; but that I now live in flesh, I live by faith, the of the Son of God, who has loved me and given himself for me.

21 I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness comes through the Law, then Christ died needlessly.”

I do not set aside the grace of God; for if righteousness by law, then Christ has died for nothing.
