1 W hen He had completed all His discourse in the hearing of the people, He went to Capernaum.
And when he had completed all his words in the hearing of the people, he entered into Capernaum.
2 A nd a centurion’s slave, who was highly regarded by him, was sick and about to die.
And a certain centurion's bondman who was dear to him was ill and about to die;
3 W hen he heard about Jesus, he sent some Jewish elders asking Him to come and save the life of his slave.
and having heard of Jesus, he sent to him elders of the Jews, begging him that he might come and save his bondman.
4 W hen they came to Jesus, they earnestly implored Him, saying, “He is worthy for You to grant this to him;
But they, being come to Jesus, besought him diligently, saying, He is worthy to whom thou shouldest grant this,
5 f or he loves our nation and it was he who built us our synagogue.”
for he loves our nation, and himself has built the synagogue for us.
6 N ow Jesus started on His way with them; and when He was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends, saying to Him, “ Lord, do not trouble Yourself further, for I am not worthy for You to come under my roof;
And Jesus went with them. But already, when he was not far from the house, the centurion sent to him friends, saying to him, Lord, do not trouble thyself, for I am not worthy that thou shouldest enter under my roof.
7 f or this reason I did not even consider myself worthy to come to You, but just say the word, and my servant will be healed.
Wherefore neither did I count myself worthy to come to thee. But say by a word and my servant shall be healed.
8 F or I also am a man placed under authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to this one, ‘Go!’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come!’ and he comes, and to my slave, ‘Do this!’ and he does it.”
For I also am a man placed under authority, having under myself soldiers, and I say to this, Go, and he goes; and to another, Come, and he comes; and to my bondman, Do this, and he does.
9 N ow when Jesus heard this, He marveled at him, and turned and said to the crowd that was following Him, “I say to you, not even in Israel have I found such great faith.”
And Jesus hearing this wondered at him, and turning to the crowd following him said, I say to you, Not even in Israel have I found so great faith.
10 W hen those who had been sent returned to the house, they found the slave in good health.
And they who had been sent returning to the house found the bondman, who was ill, in good health.
11 S oon afterwards He went to a city called Nain; and His disciples were going along with Him, accompanied by a large crowd.
And it came to pass afterwards he went into a city called Nain, and many of his disciples and a great crowd went with him.
12 N ow as He approached the gate of the city, a dead man was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow; and a sizeable crowd from the city was with her.
And as he drew near to the gate of the city, behold, a dead man was carried out, the only son of his mother, and she a widow, and a very considerable crowd of the city with her.
13 W hen the Lord saw her, He felt compassion for her, and said to her, “ Do not weep.”
And the Lord, seeing her, was moved with compassion for her, and said to her, Weep not;
14 A nd He came up and touched the coffin; and the bearers came to a halt. And He said, “Young man, I say to you, arise!”
and coming up he touched the bier, and the bearers stopped. And he said, Youth, I say to thee, Wake up.
15 T he dead man sat up and began to speak. And Jesus gave him back to his mother.
And the dead sat up and began to speak; and he gave him to his mother.
16 F ear gripped them all, and they began glorifying God, saying, “A great prophet has arisen among us!” and, “God has visited His people!”
And fear seized on all, and they glorified God, saying, A great prophet has been raised up amongst us; and God has visited his people.
17 T his report concerning Him went out all over Judea and in all the surrounding district. A Deputation from John
And this report went out in all Judaea concerning him, and in all the surrounding country.
18 T he disciples of John reported to him about all these things.
And the disciples of John brought him word concerning all these things:
19 S ummoning two of his disciples, John sent them to the Lord, saying, “Are You the Expected One, or do we look for someone else?”
and John, having called two of his disciples, sent to Jesus, saying, Art thou he that is coming, or are we to wait for another?
20 W hen the men came to Him, they said, “John the Baptist has sent us to You, to ask, ‘Are You the Expected One, or do we look for someone else?’”
But the men having come to him said, John the baptist has sent us to thee, saying, Art thou he that is coming, or are we to wait for another?
21 A t that very time He cured many people of diseases and afflictions and evil spirits; and He gave sight to many who were blind.
In that hour he healed many of diseases and plagues and evil spirits, and to many blind he granted sight.
22 A nd He answered and said to them, “Go and report to John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, the poor have the gospel preached to them.
And Jesus answering said to them, Go, bring back word to John of what ye have seen and heard: that blind see, lame walk, lepers are cleansed, deaf hear, dead are raised, poor are evangelized;
23 B lessed is he who does not take offense at Me.”
and blessed is whosoever shall not be offended in me.
24 W hen the messengers of John had left, He began to speak to the crowds about John, “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind?
And the messengers of John having departed, he began to speak to the crowds concerning John: What went ye out into the wilderness to behold? a reed shaken by the wind?
25 B ut what did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? Those who are splendidly clothed and live in luxury are found in royal palaces!
But what went ye out to see? a man clothed in delicate garments? Behold, those who are in splendid clothing and live luxuriously are in the courts of kings.
26 B ut what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and one who is more than a prophet.
But what went ye out to see? a prophet? Yea, I say to you, and more excellent than a prophet.
27 T his is the one about whom it is written, ‘ Behold, I send My messenger ahead of You, Who will prepare Your way before You.’
This is he concerning whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, who shall prepare thy way before thee;
28 I say to you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John; yet he who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.”
for I say unto you, Among them that are born of women a greater is no one than John; but he who is a little one in the kingdom of God is greater than he.
29 W hen all the people and the tax collectors heard this, they acknowledged God’s justice, having been baptized with the baptism of John.
(And all the people who heard, and the tax-gatherers, justified God, having been baptised with the baptism of John;
30 B ut the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected God’s purpose for themselves, not having been baptized by John.
but the Pharisees and the lawyers rendered null as to themselves the counsel of God, not having been baptised by him.)
31 “ To what then shall I compare the men of this generation, and what are they like?
To whom therefore shall I liken the men of this generation, and to whom are they like?
32 T hey are like children who sit in the market place and call to one another, and they say, ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not weep.’
They are like children sitting in the market-place, and calling one to another and saying, We have piped to you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned to you, and ye have not wept.
33 F or John the Baptist has come eating no bread and drinking no wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon!’
For John the baptist has come neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and ye say, He has a demon.
34 T he Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Behold, a gluttonous man and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’
The Son of man has come eating and drinking, and ye say, Behold an eater and wine-drinker, a friend of tax-gatherers and sinners;
35 Y et wisdom is vindicated by all her children.”
and wisdom has been justified of all her children.
36 N ow one of the Pharisees was requesting Him to dine with him, and He entered the Pharisee’s house and reclined at the table.
But one of the Pharisees begged him that he would eat with him. And entering into the house of the Pharisee he took his place at table;
37 A nd there was a woman in the city who was a sinner; and when she learned that He was reclining at the table in the Pharisee’s house, she brought an alabaster vial of perfume,
and behold, a woman in the city, who was a sinner, and knew that he was sitting at meat in the house of the Pharisee, having taken an alabaster box of myrrh,
38 a nd standing behind Him at His feet, weeping, she began to wet His feet with her tears, and kept wiping them with the hair of her head, and kissing His feet and anointing them with the perfume.
and standing at his feet behind weeping, began to wash his feet with tears; and she wiped them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed with the myrrh.
39 N ow when the Pharisee who had invited Him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet He would know who and what sort of person this woman is who is touching Him, that she is a sinner.” Parable of Two Debtors
And the Pharisee who had invited him, seeing it, spoke with himself saying, This if he were a prophet would have known who and what the woman is who touches him, for she is a sinner.
40 A nd Jesus answered him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.” And he replied, “Say it, Teacher.”
And Jesus answering said to him, Simon, I have somewhat to say to thee. And he says, Teacher, say.
41 “ A moneylender had two debtors: one owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty.
There were two debtors of a certain creditor: one owed five hundred denarii and the other fifty;
42 W hen they were unable to repay, he graciously forgave them both. So which of them will love him more?”
but as they had nothing to pay, he forgave both of them: which of them therefore will love him most?
43 S imon answered and said, “I suppose the one whom he forgave more.” And He said to him, “You have judged correctly.”
And Simon answering said, I suppose he to whom he forgave the most. And he said to him, Thou hast rightly judged.
44 T urning toward the woman, He said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave Me no water for My feet, but she has wet My feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair.
And turning to the woman he said to Simon, Seest thou this woman? I entered into thy house; thou gavest me not water on my feet, but she has washed my feet with tears, and wiped them with her hair.
45 Y ou gave Me no kiss; but she, since the time I came in, has not ceased to kiss My feet.
Thou gavest me not a kiss, but she from the time I came in has not ceased kissing my feet.
46 Y ou did not anoint My head with oil, but she anointed My feet with perfume.
My head with oil thou didst not anoint, but she has anointed my feet with myrrh.
47 F or this reason I say to you, her sins, which are many, have been forgiven, for she loved much; but he who is forgiven little, loves little.”
For which cause I say to thee, Her many sins are forgiven; for she loved much; but he to whom little is forgiven loves little.
48 T hen He said to her, “ Your sins have been forgiven.”
And he said to her, Thy sins are forgiven.
49 T hose who were reclining at the table with Him began to say to themselves, “ Who is this man who even forgives sins?”
And they that were with at table began to say within themselves, Who is this who forgives also sins?
50 A nd He said to the woman, “ Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”
And he said to the woman, Thy faith has saved thee; go in peace.
