1 T hen after a period of fourteen years I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, taking Titus also with me.
Then after a lapse of fourteen years I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, taking Titus also with;
2 I went up by revelation, and I laid before them the Good News which I preach among the Gentiles, but privately before those who were respected, for fear that I might be running, or had run, in vain.
and I went up according to revelation, and I laid before them the glad tidings which I preach among the nations, but privately to those conspicuous, lest in any way I run or had run in vain;
3 B ut not even Titus, who was with me, being a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised.
(but neither was Titus, who was with me, being a Greek, compelled to be circumcised;)
4 T his was because of the false brothers secretly brought in, who stole in to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into bondage;
and on account of the false brethren brought in surreptitiously, who came in surreptitiously to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into bondage;
5 t o whom we gave no place in the way of subjection, not for an hour, that the truth of the Good News might continue with you.
to whom we yielded in subjection not even for an hour, that the truth of the glad tidings might remain with you.
6 B ut from those who were reputed to be important (whatever they were, it makes no difference to me; God doesn’t show partiality to man)—they, I say, who were respected imparted nothing to me,
But from those who were conspicuous as being somewhat—whatsoever they were, it makes no difference to me: God does not accept man's person; for to me those who were conspicuous communicated nothing;
7 b ut to the contrary, when they saw that I had been entrusted with the Good News for the uncircumcision, even as Peter with the Good News for the circumcision
but, on the contrary, seeing that the glad tidings of the uncircumcision were confided to me, even as to Peter that of the circumcision,
8 ( for he who appointed Peter to the apostleship of the circumcision appointed me also to the Gentiles);
(for he that wrought in Peter for apostleship of the circumcision wrought also in me towards the Gentiles,)
9 a nd when they perceived the grace that was given to me, James and Cephas and John, they who were reputed to be pillars, gave to me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship, that we should go to the Gentiles, and they to the circumcision.
and recognising the grace given to me, James and Cephas and John, who were conspicuous as being pillars, gave to me and Barnabas right hands of fellowship, that we to the nations, and they to the circumcision;
10 T hey only asked us to remember the poor—which very thing I was also zealous to do.
only that we should remember the poor, which same thing also I was diligent to do.
11 B ut when Peter came to Antioch, I resisted him to his face, because he stood condemned.
But when Peter came to Antioch, I withstood him to face, because he was to be condemned:
12 F or before some people came from James, he ate with the Gentiles. But when they came, he drew back and separated himself, fearing those who were of the circumcision.
for before that certain came from James, he ate with the nations; but when they came, he drew back and separated himself, fearing those of circumcision;
13 A nd the rest of the Jews joined him in his hypocrisy; so that even Barnabas was carried away with their hypocrisy.
and the rest of the Jews also played the same dissembling part with him; so that even Barnabas was carried away too by their dissimulation.
14 B ut when I saw that they didn’t walk uprightly according to the truth of the Good News, I said to Peter before them all, “If you, being a Jew, live as the Gentiles do, and not as the Jews do, why do you compel the Gentiles to live as the Jews do?
But when I saw that they do not walk straightforwardly, according to the truth of the glad tidings, I said to Peter before all, If thou, being a Jew, livest as the nations and not as the Jews, how dost thou compel the nations to Judaize?
15 “ We, being Jews by nature, and not Gentile sinners,
We, Jews by nature, and not sinners of nations,
16 y et knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Christ, and not by the works of the law, because no flesh will be justified by the works of the law.
but knowing that a man is not justified on the principle of works of law but by the faith of Jesus Christ, we also have believed on Christ Jesus, that we might be justified on the principle of faith of Christ; and not of works of law; because on the principle of works of law no flesh shall be justified.
17 B ut if, while we sought to be justified in Christ, we ourselves also were found sinners, is Christ a servant of sin? Certainly not!
Now if in seeking to be justified in Christ we also have been found sinners, then Christ minister of sin? Far be the thought.
18 F or if I build up again those things which I destroyed, I prove myself a law-breaker.
For if the things I have thrown down, these I build again, I constitute myself a transgressor.
19 F or I, through the law, died to the law, that I might live to God.
For I, through law, have died to law, that I may live to God.
20 I have been crucified with Christ, and it is no longer I that live, but Christ living in me. That life which I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself up for me.
I am crucified with Christ, and no longer live, I, but Christ lives in me; but that I now live in flesh, I live by faith, the of the Son of God, who has loved me and given himself for me.
21 I don’t make void the grace of God. For if righteousness is through the law, then Christ died for nothing!”
I do not set aside the grace of God; for if righteousness by law, then Christ has died for nothing.
