1 I n the same way, wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; so that, even if any don’t obey the Word, they may be won by the behavior of their wives without a word;

Likewise, wives, subject to your own husbands, that, even if any are disobedient to the word, they may be gained without word by the conversation of the wives,

2 s eeing your pure behavior in fear.

having witnessed your pure conversation in fear;

3 L et your beauty be not just the outward adorning of braiding the hair, and of wearing jewels of gold, or of putting on fine clothing;

whose adorning let it not be that outward one of tressing of hair, and wearing gold, or putting on apparel;

4 b ut in the hidden person of the heart, in the incorruptible adornment of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God very precious.

but the hidden man of the heart, in the incorruptible of a meek and quiet spirit, which in the sight of God is of great price.

5 F or this is how the holy women before, who hoped in God also adorned themselves, being in subjection to their own husbands:

For thus also the holy women who have hoped in God heretofore adorned themselves, being subject to their own husbands;

6 a s Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord, whose children you now are, if you do well, and are not put in fear by any terror.

as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord; whose children ye have become, doing good, and not fearing with any kind of consternation.

7 Y ou husbands, in the same way, live with your wives according to knowledge, giving honor to the woman, as to the weaker vessel, as being also joint heirs of the grace of life; that your prayers may not be hindered.

husbands likewise, dwell with according to knowledge, as with a weaker, the female, vessel, giving honour, as also fellow-heirs of grace of life, that your prayers be not hindered.

8 F inally, be all like-minded, compassionate, loving as brothers, tender hearted, courteous,

Finally, all of one mind, sympathising, full of brotherly love, tender hearted, humble minded;

9 n ot rendering evil for evil, or insult for insult; but instead blessing; knowing that to this were you called, that you may inherit a blessing.

not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing; but on the contrary, blessing, because ye have been called to this, that ye should inherit blessing.

10 F or, “He who would love life, and see good days, let him keep his tongue from evil, and his lips from speaking deceit.

For he that will love life and see good days, let him cause his tongue to cease from evil and his lips that they speak no guile.

11 L et him turn away from evil, and do good. Let him seek peace, and pursue it.

And let him avoid evil, and do good; let him seek peace and pursue it;

12 F or the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears open to their prayer; but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.”

because eyes of Lord on righteous, and his ears towards their supplications; but face of Lord against them that do evil.

13 N ow who is he who will harm you, if you become imitators of that which is good?

And who shall injure you if ye have become imitators of that which good?

14 B ut even if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, you are blessed. “Don’t fear what they fear, neither be troubled.”

But if also ye should suffer for righteousness' sake, blessed; but be not afraid of their fear, neither be troubled;

15 B ut sanctify the Lord God in your hearts; and always be ready to give an answer to everyone who asks you a reason concerning the hope that is in you, with humility and fear:

but sanctify Lord the Christ in your hearts, and always prepared to an answer every one that asks you to give an account of the hope that in you, but with meekness and fear;

16 h aving a good conscience; that, while you are spoken against as evildoers, they may be disappointed who curse your good way of life in Christ.

having a good conscience, that in which they speak against you as evildoers, they may be ashamed who calumniate your good conversation in Christ.

17 F or it is better, if it is God’s will, that you suffer for doing well than for doing evil.

For better, if the will of God should will it, to suffer well-doers than evildoers;

18 B ecause Christ also suffered for sins once, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring you to God; being put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit;

for Christ indeed has once suffered for sins, just for unjust, that he might bring us to God; being put to death in flesh, but made alive in Spirit,

19 i n which he also went and preached to the spirits in prison,

in which also going he preached to the spirits in prison,

20 w ho before were disobedient, when God waited patiently in the days of Noah, while the ship was being built. In it, few, that is, eight souls, were saved through water.

heretofore disobedient, when the longsuffering of God waited in days of Noah while the ark was preparing, into which few, that is, eight souls, were saved through water:

21 T his is a symbol of baptism, which now saves you—not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,

which figure also now saves you, baptism, not a putting away of filth of flesh, but demand as before God of a good conscience, by resurrection of Jesus Christ,

22 w ho is at the right hand of God, having gone into heaven, angels and authorities and powers being made subject to him.

who is at right hand of God, gone into heaven, angels and authorities and powers being subjected to him.
