1 C all now, if there be any that will answer thee; and to which of the saints wilt thou turn?

«إنْ دَعَوتَ الآنَ، فَمَنْ يُجِيبُكَ؟ وَإلَى مَنْ مِنَ المَلائِكَةِ سَتَلجَأُ؟

2 F or wrath killeth the foolish man, and envy slayeth the silly one.

لأنَّ الغَيظَ يَقتُلُ الأحْمَقَ، وَالحَسَدُ يَذبَحُ الأبلَهُ.

3 I have seen the foolish taking root: but suddenly I cursed his habitation.

قَد رَأيتُ الأحْمَقَ يَمُدُّ جُذُورَهُ، وَفَجأةً هُدِمَ مَسْكِنُهُ!

4 H is children are far from safety, and they are crushed in the gate, neither is there any to deliver them.

أبناؤُهُ بَعِيدُونَ عَنِ الأمانِ، يُهزَمُونَ فِي المُحاكَمَةِ، وَما مِنْ أحَدٍ يُدافِعُ عَنهُمْ.

5 W hose harvest the hungry eateth up, and taketh it even out of the thorns, and the robber swalloweth up their substance.

يَأكُلُ الجّائِعُ حَصادَهُ، وَيَأخُذُهُ مِنْ بَينِ الأشواكِ، وَيَشتَهِي الجَشِعُونَ ثَروَتَهُ.

6 A lthough affliction cometh not forth of the dust, neither doth trouble spring out of the ground;

لأنَّ المُصِيبَةَ لا تَأتِي مِنَ التُرابِ، وَلا تَنبُتُ المُعاناةُ مِنَ الأرْضِ.

7 Y et man is born unto trouble, as the sparks fly upward.

لَكِنَّ البَشَرَ يَلِدُونَ المُصِيبَةَ، تَماماً كَما تُرفَعُ ألسِنَةُ اللَّهَبِ إلَى الأعلَى.

8 I would seek unto God, and unto God would I commit my cause:

أمّا أنا فَأتَضَرَّعُ إلَى اللهِ، وَأُخبِرُهُ بِما أصابَنِي.

9 W hich doeth great things and unsearchable; marvellous things without number:

فَهُوَ صانِعُ الأعمالِ العَظِيمَةِ الَّتِي يَصْعُبُ فَهْمُها، الأعمالِ المُهِيبَةِ الَّتِي لا تُحصَى.

10 W ho giveth rain upon the earth, and sendeth waters upon the fields:

هُوَ الَّذِي يُرسِلُ المَطَرَ عَلَى وَجهِ الأرْضِ، وَيُرسِلُ المِياهَ عَلَى وَجهِ الحُقُولِ.

11 T o set up on high those that be low; that those which mourn may be exalted to safety.

يَرفَعُ المُتَّضِعِينَ، وَيُحَسِّنُ حالَ مَنْ سَوَّدَ الحُزنُ حَياتَهُمْ.

12 H e disappointeth the devices of the crafty, so that their hands cannot perform their enterprise.

هُوَ الَّذِي يُحْبِطُ مُؤامَراتِ الماكِرِينَ، لِئَلّا يَنجَحُوا فِي مَقاصِدِهِمْ.

13 H e taketh the wise in their own craftiness: and the counsel of the froward is carried headlong.

يَصطادُ اللهُ الحُكَماءَ بِذَكائِهِمْ، فَيُفْشِلُ خُطَّةَ الماكِرِينَ.

14 T hey meet with darkness in the day time, and grope in the noonday as in the night.

تُواجِهُهُمُ الظُّلْمَةُ فِي وَضَحِ النَّهارِ. وَيَتَلَمَّسُونَ طَرِيقَهُمْ فِي الظُّهرِ، كَما فِي الظَّلامِ.

15 B ut he saveth the poor from the sword, from their mouth, and from the hand of the mighty.

لَكِنَّ اللهَ يُخَلِّصُ الفَقِيرَ مِنْ سِياطِ أفواهِهِمْ، وَمِن يَدِ القَوِيِّ.

16 S o the poor hath hope, and iniquity stoppeth her mouth.

لِهَذا يُوجَدُ رَجاءٌ لِلمِسْكِينِ، وَيَسُدُّ الظُلمُ فَمَهُ!

17 B ehold, happy is the man whom God correcteth: therefore despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty:

«هَنِيئاً لِمَن يُؤَدِّبهُ اللهُ، فَلا تَرْفُضْ تَأدِيبَ القَدِيرِ.

18 F or he maketh sore, and bindeth up: he woundeth, and his hands make whole.

لأنَّ اللهَ يَضْرِبُ وَيُضَمِّدُ. يَجْرَحُ وَيَداهُ تَشفِيانِ.

19 H e shall deliver thee in six troubles: yea, in seven there shall no evil touch thee.

يُخَلِّصُكَ مِنَ الضِّيقاتِ مَرَّةً بَعدَ مَرَّةٍ، وَلا يَمَسُّكَ السُّوءُ أيضاً.

20 I n famine he shall redeem thee from death: and in war from the power of the sword.

فِي المَجاعَةِ يَحْمِيكَ مِنَ المَوتِ، وَفِي الحَربِ مِنَ القَتلِ بِالسَّيفِ.

21 T hou shalt be hid from the scourge of the tongue: neither shalt thou be afraid of destruction when it cometh.

يَحمِيكَ مِنَ افتِراءِ الألسِنَةِ الَّتِي تَنزِلُ كَالسِّياطِ، فَلَيْسَ ما يَدعُوكَ إلَى أنْ تَخشَى المَصائِبَ حِينَ تَأتِي.

22 A t destruction and famine thou shalt laugh: neither shalt thou be afraid of the beasts of the earth.

تَهزَأُ بِالخَرابِ وَالمَجاعَةِ، وَوُحُوشُ البَرِّيَّةِ لا تُخِيفُكَ.

23 F or thou shalt be in league with the stones of the field: and the beasts of the field shall be at peace with thee.

لأنَّكَ سَتَقطَعُ عَهداً مَعَ صُخُورِ الأرْضِ، وَتُسالِمُكَ وُحُوشُ البَرِّيَّةِ.

24 A nd thou shalt know that thy tabernacle shall be in peace; and thou shalt visit thy habitation, and shalt not sin.

سَتَعرِفُ أنَّ بَيتَكَ آمِنٌ، وَتَتَفَقَّدُ قَطِيعَكَ فَتَجِدهُ غَيرَ مَنقُوصٍ.

25 T hou shalt know also that thy seed shall be great, and thine offspring as the grass of the earth.

سَتَعرِفُ أنَّكَ سَتُرْزَقُ بِنَسلٍ كَثِيرٍ، وَسَتَكُونُ ذُرِّيَّتُكَ بِعَدَدِ أوراقِ عُشبِ الأرْضِ.

26 T hou shalt come to thy grave in a full age, like as a shock of corn cometh in in his season.

سَتَعِيشُ حَياتَكَ كامِلَةً، فَتَكُونُ كَكَوْمَةٍ مِنَ الحُبُوبِ النّاضِجَةِ وَقتَ حَصادِها.

27 L o this, we have searched it, so it is; hear it, and know thou it for thy good.

هَذا هُوَ الأمرُ الَّذِي تَفَحَّصناهُ، وَهُوَ هَكَذا … فَاسمَعْ وَتَعَلَّمْ أنْتَ.»
