1 ه َذِهِ هِيَ كَلِماتُ المُعَلِّمِ، ابْنِ داوُدَ وَمَلِكِ القُدْسِ:

The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem.

2 ك ُلُّ شَيءٍ زائِلٌ وَفارِغٌ، يَقُولُ المُعَلِّمُ، كُلُّ شَيءٍ زائِلٌ وَفارِغٌ. الكُلُّ زائلٌ!

Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities! all is vanity.

3 ي َتْعَبُ الإنسانُ كَثِيراً فِي هَذِهِ الدُّنْيا، فَماذا يَكسِبُ مِنْ وَراءِ تَعَبِهِ كُلِّهِ؟ الأُمُورُ هِيَ هِيَ!

What profit hath man of all his labour wherewith he laboureth under the sun?

4 أ ُناسٌ يَمُوتُونَ وَأُناسٌ يُولَدُونَ، وَالأرْضُ تَبقَى بَعدَهُمْ.

generation passeth away, and generation cometh, but the earth standeth for ever.

5 ت َستَيقِظُ الشَّمْسُ فِي الصَّباحِ، وَتَنامُ فِي المَساءِ. ثُمَّ تُعَجِّلُ بِالاسْتِيقاظِ مِنْ جَدِيدٍ فِي المَكانِ نَفسِهِ.

The sun also riseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to its place where it ariseth.

6 ت َهُبُّ الرِّيحُ جَنُوباً، ثُمَّ تَهِبُّ شِمالاً. تَدُورُ وَتَدُورُ، ثُمَّ تَنعَطِفُ لِتَعُودَ إلَى مَكانِها الَّذِي انطَلَقتْ مِنْهُ.

The wind goeth towards the south, and turneth about towards the north: it turneth about continually, and the wind returneth again to its circuits.

7 ت َجرِي الأنهارُ كُلُّها إلَى البَحرِ، لَكِنَّ ماءَ البَحرِ لا يَزِيدُ. فَمِياهُ الأنهارِ تعُودُ إلَى المَكانِ الَّذِي جَرَتْ مِنْهُ.

All the rivers run into the sea, yet the sea is not full: unto the place whither the rivers go, thither they go again.

8 ت َعجَزُ الكَلِماتُ عَنِ الوَصْفِ، لَكِنْ يَظَلُّ النّاسُ يَتَكَلَّمُونَ. فَالكَلامُ كَثيرٌ، لَكِنَّ آذانَنا لا تَمتَلِئُ. وَنَرَى الكَثيرَ، لَكِنَّ عُيُونَنا لا تَكتَفِي. ما مِنْ جَدِيد

All things are full of toil; none can express it. The eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.

9 م ا سَيَكُونُ هُوَ ما كانَ مُنذُ القِدَمِ. وَما سَيَفعَلُهُ البَشَرُ هُوَ ما كانُوا يَفعَلُونَهُ. لَمْ يَطرَأْ جَدِيدٌ فِي هَذِهِ الدُّنْيا.

That which hath been is that which shall be; and that which hath been done is that which will be done: and there is nothing new under the sun.

10 ق َدْ يَقُولُ أحَدُهُمْ: «هَذا شَيءٌ جَدِيدٌ!» لَكِنْ لَدَى فَحصِهِ، نُدرِكُ أنَّهُ لَيسَ جَدِيداً. وَنُدرِكُ أنَّ كُلَّ الَّذِينَ سَبَقُونا اختَبَرُوهُ.

Is there a thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? It hath been already in the ages which were before us.

11 ل ا أحَدَ يَتَذَّكَرُ الَّذِينَ عاشُوا قَدِيماً وَرَحَلُوا. وَالَّذِينَ سَيأتُونَ، سَينساهُمُ الآتُونَ بَعدَهُمْ. هَلِ الحِكْمَةُ تَأْتِي بِالسَّعادَةِ؟

There is no remembrance of former things; neither shall there be remembrance of things that are to come with those who shall live afterwards.

12 ك ُنتُ، أنا المُعَلِّمَ، مَلِكاً فِي القُدسِ عَلَى إسْرائِيلَ.

I, the Preacher, was king over Israel in Jerusalem.

13 و َنَوَيتُ فِي قَلبِي أنْ أبحَثَ وَأدرُسَ. أنْ أُوَظِّفَ حِكمَتِي فِي تَعَلُّمِ كُلِّ شَيءٍ فِي هَذا العالَمِ. فَوَجَدْتُ أنَّ اللهَ خَلَقَ البَشَرَ لِكَي يَشقَوْا فِي الحَياةِ.

And I applied my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all that is done under the heavens: this grievous occupation hath God given to the children of men to weary themselves therewith.

14 ت َأمَّلْتُ فِي كُلِّ ما عَمِلَهُ النّاسُ فِي هَذِهِ الدُّنْيا، فَوَجَدْتُ أنَّهُ زائِلٌ وَكَمُطارَدَةِ الرِّيحِ.

I have seen all the works that are done under the sun, and behold, all is vanity and pursuit of the wind.

15 ع َبَثاً نُحاوِلُ إصلاحَ ما هُوَ أعوَجُ. وَعَبَثاً نُحاوِلُ أنْ نُحْصِيَ ما هُوَ مَفقُودٌ.

That which is crooked cannot be made straight; and that which is wanting cannot be numbered.

16 ق ُلْتُ لِنَفسِي مَرَّةً: «أنا حَكِيمٌ جِدّاً! بَلْ أنا أحكَمُ مِنْ كُلِّ المُلُوكِ الَّذِينَ حَكَمُوا القُدسَ قَبلِي! لَقَدْ حَصَلْتُ عَلَى المَعرِفَةِ وَالحِكْمَةِ الحَقِيقِيَّتَينِ!»

I communed with mine own heart, saying, Lo, I have become great and have acquired wisdom more than all they that have been before me over Jerusalem; and my heart hath seen much of wisdom and knowledge.

17 و َنَوَيتُ أنْ أعرِفَ كَيفَ أنَّ الحِكْمَةَ وَالمَعرِفَةَ أفضَلُ مِنَ الجَهلِ وَالحُمْقِ، فَخَلُصْتُ إلَى أنَّ هَذا أيضاً زائِلٌ وَكَمُطارَدَةِ الرِّيحِ.

And I applied my heart to the knowledge of wisdom, and to the knowledge of madness and folly: I perceived that this also is a striving after the wind.

18 ف َمَعْ كَثْرَةِ الفَهْمِ تَأْتِي كَثْرَةُ الإحباطِ. وَكُلَّما زادَ عِلْمُ الإنسانِ زادَ حُزْنُهُ أيضاً.

For in much wisdom is much vexation, and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.
