1 L et us also therefore, having so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, laying aside every weight, and sin which so easily entangles us, run with endurance the race that lies before us,

¶ Therefore, seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, leaving behind all the weight of the sin which surrounds us, let us run with patience the race that is set before us,

2 l ooking stedfastly on Jesus the leader and completer of faith: who, in view of the joy lying before him, endured cross, having despised shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

with our eyes fixed on Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who having been offered joy, endured the cross, despising the shame and was seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

3 F or consider well him who endured so great contradiction from sinners against himself, that ye be not weary, fainting in your minds.

For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself lest ye be wearied in your souls and faint.

4 Y e have not yet resisted unto blood, wrestling against sin.

¶ Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, fighting against sin.

5 A nd ye have quite forgotten the exhortation which speaks to you as to sons: My son, despise not chastening of Lord, nor faint reproved by him;

And ye have quite forgotten the consolation which speaks unto you as unto sons, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art reproved of him:

6 f or whom Lord loves he chastens, and scourges every son whom he receives.

for whom the Lord loves, he chastens and scourges everyone whom he receives as a son.

7 Y e endure for chastening, God conducts himself towards you as towards sons; for who is the son that the father chastens not?

If ye endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father does not chasten?

8 B ut if ye are without chastening, of which all have been made partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons.

But if ye are without chastisement, of which all the sons are partakers, then ye are bastards, and not sons.

9 M oreover we have had the fathers of our flesh as chasteners, and we reverenced; shall we not much rather be in subjection to the Father of spirits, and live?

Furthermore, we have had fathers of our flesh who corrected us, and we gave them reverence; is it not much better to be in subjection to the Father of spirits, and we shall live?

10 F or they indeed chastened for a few days, as seemed good to them; but he for profit, in order to the partaking of his holiness.

For they verily for a few days chastened us as it seemed good unto them, but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness.

11 B ut no chastening at the time seems to be of joy, but of grief; but afterwards yields peaceful fruit of righteousness to those exercised by it.

It is true that no chastening at present seems to be cause for joy, but rather for grief; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto those who are exercised by it.

12 W herefore lift up the hands that hang down, and the failing knees;

Therefore, lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees,

13 a nd make straight paths for your feet, that that which is lame be not turned aside; but that rather it may be healed.

and make straight steps unto your feet, so that which is lame will not turn out of the way, but let it rather be healed.

14 P ursue peace with all, and holiness, without which no one shall see the Lord:

Follow peace with everyone and holiness, without which no one shall see the Lord:

15 w atching lest any one who lacks the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble, and many be defiled by it;

looking diligently that no one deviate from the grace of God, lest any root of bitterness springing up impede you, and thereby many be defiled,

16 l est any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one meal sold his birthright;

lest there be any fornicator or profane person as Esau, who for one morsel of food sold his birthright.

17 f or ye know that also afterwards, desiring to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, (for he found no place for repentance) although he sought it earnestly with tears.

For ye know how that afterward, desiring to inherit the blessing, he was rejected; for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears.

18 F or ye have not come to that might be touched and was all on fire, and to obscurity, and darkness, and tempest,

¶ For ye are not come unto the mount that might be touched and that burned with fire nor unto blackness and darkness and tempest

19 a nd trumpet's sound, and voice of words; which they that heard, excusing themselves, declined word being addressed to them any more:

and the sound of a trumpet and the voice of words, which voice those that heard intreated that the word should not be spoken to them any more;

20 ( for they were not able to bear what was enjoined: And if a beast should touch the mountain, it shall be stoned;

(for they could not endure that which was commanded, and if so much as a beast should touch the mountain, it shall be stoned or thrust through with a dart:

21 a nd, so fearful was the sight, Moses said, I am exceedingly afraid and full of trembling;)

and so terrible was the sight that Moses said, I exceedingly fear and quake);

22 b ut ye have come to mount Zion; and to city of living God, heavenly Jerusalem; and to myriads of angels,

but ye are come unto Mount Sion and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels,

23 t he universal gathering; and to assembly of the firstborn registered in heaven; and to God, judge of all; and to spirits of just made perfect;

to the congregation of the called out ones of the firstborn, who are registered in the heavens and to God the Judge of all and to the spirits of just men made perfect

24 a nd to Jesus, mediator of a new covenant; and to blood of sprinkling, speaking better than Abel.

and to Jesus, the mediator of the new testament and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaks better than that of Abel.

25 S ee that ye refuse not him that speaks. For if those did not escape who had refused him who uttered the oracles on earth, much more we who turn away from him from heaven:

See that you do not refuse him that speaks. For if those who refused him that spoke on earth did not escape, much less shall we escape, if we turn away from him that speaks from the heavens,

26 w hose voice then shook the earth; but now he has promised, saying, Yet once will I shake not only the earth, but also the heaven.

whose voice then shook the earth; but now he has promised, saying, Yet even once, I shall shake not the earth only, but also the heaven.

27 B ut this Yet once, signifies the removing of what is shaken, as being made, that what is not shaken may remain.

And this word, Yet even once, signifies the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that are made, that those things which cannot be shaken may remain.

28 W herefore let us, receiving a kingdom not to be shaken, have grace, by which let us serve God acceptably with reverence and fear.

Therefore, receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us hold fast to the grace, by which we serve God, pleasing him with reverence and godly fear:

29 F or also our God a consuming fire.

for our God is a consuming fire.
