1 W herefore, being no longer able to refrain ourselves, we thought good to be left alone in Athens,

¶ Therefore when we could wait no longer, we agreed to remain in Athens alone

2 a nd sent Timotheus, our brother and fellow-workman under God in the glad tidings of Christ, to confirm you and encourage concerning your faith,

and sent Timothy, our brother and minister of God and our fellowlabourer in the gospel of the Christ, to confirm you and to exhort you in your faith,

3 t hat no one might be moved by these afflictions. (For yourselves know that we are set for this;

that no one should be moved in these tribulations, for you know that we are appointed for this.

4 f or also, when we were with you, we told you beforehand we are about to be in tribulation, even as also it came to pass, and ye know.)

For even when we were with you, we told you in advance that we must pass through tribulations, even as it has come to pass, and ye know.

5 F or this reason I also, no longer able to refrain myself, sent to know your faith, lest perhaps the tempter had tempted you and our labour should be come to nothing.

For this cause I, also, not waiting any longer, have sent to know your faith, lest by some means the tempter has tempted you and our labour is in vain.

6 B ut Timotheus having just come to us from you, and brought to us the glad tidings of your faith and love, and that ye have always good remembrance of us, desiring much to see us, even as we also you;

¶ But now when Timothy came from you unto us and brought us good tidings of your faith and charity and that ye have good remembrance of us always, desiring greatly to see us, as we also to see you.

7 f or this reason we have been comforted in you, brethren, in all our distress and tribulation, through your faith,

Therefore, brethren, we were comforted over you in all our tribulation and need by your faith;

8 b ecause now we live if ye stand firm in Lord.

for now we live, if ye stand fast in the Lord.

9 F or what thanksgiving can we render to God for you, for all the joy wherewith we rejoice on account of you before our God,

For what thanks can we render to God again for you for all the joy with which we joy for your sakes before our God,

10 n ight and day beseeching exceedingly to the end that we may see your face, and perfect what is lacking in your faith?

night and day praying exceedingly that we might see your face and might complete that which is lacking in your faith?

11 B ut our God and Father himself, and our Lord Jesus, direct our way to you.

¶ Now may God himself and our Father and our Lord Jesus Christ direct our way unto you.

12 B ut you, may the Lord make to exceed and abound in love toward one another, and toward all, even as we also towards you,

And the Lord make you to multiply and make charity to abound among you and toward all men, even as it is with us toward you,

13 i n order to the confirming of your hearts unblamable in holiness before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all his saints.

that your hearts may be confirmed in holiness, irreprehensible before God, even our Father, for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all his saints.
