1 A nd the Lord said to Moses and Aaron,

And Jehovah spake unto Moses and to Aaron, saying unto them,

2 S ay to the Israelites: These are the animals which you may eat among all the beasts that are on the earth.

Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, These are the living things which ye may eat among all the beasts that are on the earth.

3 W hatever parts the hoof and is cloven-footed and chews the cud, any of these animals you may eat.

Whatsoever parteth the hoof, and is clovenfooted, and cheweth the cud, among the beasts, that may ye eat.

4 N evertheless these you shall not eat of those that chew the cud or divide the hoof: the camel, because it chews the cud but does not divide the hoof; it is unclean to you.

Nevertheless these shall ye not eat of them that chew the cud, or of them that part the hoof: the camel, because he cheweth the cud but parteth not the hoof, he is unclean unto you.

5 A nd the coney or rock badger, because it chews the cud but does not divide the hoof; it is unclean to you.

And the coney, because he cheweth the cud but parteth not the hoof, he is unclean unto you.

6 A nd the hare, because it chews the cud but does not divide the hoof; it is unclean to you.

And the hare, because she cheweth the cud but parteth not the hoof, she is unclean unto you.

7 A nd the swine, because it divides the hoof and is cloven-footed but does not chew the cud; it is unclean to you.

And the swine, because he parteth the hoof, and is clovenfooted, but cheweth not the cud, he is unclean unto you.

8 O f their flesh you shall not eat, and their carcasses you shall not touch; they are unclean to you.

Of their flesh ye shall not eat, and their carcasses ye shall not touch; they are unclean unto you.

9 T hese you may eat of all that are in the waters: whatever has fins and scales in the waters, in the seas, and in the rivers, these you may eat;

These may ye eat of all that are in the waters: whatsoever hath fins and scales in the waters, in the seas, and in the rivers, that may ye eat.

10 B ut all that have not fins and scales in the seas and in the rivers, of all the creeping things in the waters, and of all the living creatures which are in the waters, they are an abomination and abhorrence to you.

And all that have not fins and scales in the seas, and in the rivers, of all that move in the waters, and of all the living creatures that are in the waters, they are an abomination unto you,

11 T hey shall continue to be an abomination to you; you shall not eat of their flesh, but you shall detest their carcasses.

and they shall be an abomination unto you; ye shall not eat of their flesh, and their carcasses ye shall have in abomination.

12 E verything in the waters that has not fins or scales shall be abhorrent and detestable to you.

Whatsoever hath no fins nor scales in the waters, that is an abomination unto you.

13 T hese you shall have in abomination among the birds; they shall not be eaten, for they are detestable: the eagle, the ossifrage, the ospray,

And these ye shall have in abomination among the birds; they shall not be eaten, they are an abomination: the eagle, and the gier-eagle, and the ospray,

14 T he kite, the whole species of falcon,

and the kite, and the falcon after its kind,

15 E very kind of raven,

every raven after its kind,

16 T he ostrich, the nighthawk, the sea gull, every species of hawk,

and the ostrich, and the night-hawk, and the seamew, and the hawk after its kind,

17 T he owl, the cormorant, the ibis,

and the little owl, and the cormorant, and the great owl,

18 T he swan, the pelican, the vulture,

and the horned owl, and the pelican, and the vulture,

19 T he stork, all kinds of heron, the hoopoe, and the bat.

and the stork, the heron after its kind, and the hoopoe, and the bat.

20 A ll winged insects that go upon all fours are to be an abomination to you;

All winged creeping things that go upon all fours are an abomination unto you.

21 Y et of all winged insects that go upon all fours you may eat those which have legs above their feet with which to leap on the ground.

Yet these may ye eat of all winged creeping things that go upon all fours, which have legs above their feet, wherewith to leap upon the earth.

22 O f these you may eat: the whole species of locust, of bald locust, of cricket, and of grasshopper.

Even these of them ye may eat: the locust after its kind, and the bald locust after its kind, and the cricket after its kind, and the grasshopper after its kind.

23 B ut all other winged insects which have four feet shall be detestable to you.

But all winged creeping things, which have four feet, are an abomination unto you.

24 A nd by these you shall become unclean; whoever touches the carcass of them shall be unclean until the evening,

And by these ye shall become unclean: whosoever toucheth the carcass of them shall be unclean until the even;

25 A nd whoever carries any part of their carcass shall wash his clothes and be unclean until the evening.

And whosoever beareth aught of the carcass of them shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even.

26 E very beast which parts the hoof but is not cloven-footed or does not chew the cud is unclean to you; everyone who touches them shall be unclean.

Every beast which parteth the hoof, and is not clovenfooted, nor cheweth the cud, is unclean unto you: every one that toucheth them shall be unclean.

27 A nd all that go on their paws, among all kinds of four-footed beasts, are unclean to you; whoever touches their carcass shall be unclean until the evening,

And whatsoever goeth upon its paws, among all beasts that go on all fours, they are unclean unto you: whoso toucheth their carcass shall be unclean until the even.

28 A nd he who carries their carcass shall wash his clothes and be unclean until the evening; they are unclean to you.

And he that beareth the carcass of them shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even: they are unclean unto you.

29 T hese also are unclean to you among the creeping things and creep upon the ground: the weasel, the mouse, any kind of great lizard,

And these are they which are unclean unto you among the creeping things that creep upon the earth: the weasel, and the mouse, and the great lizard after its kind,

30 T he gecko, the land crocodile, the lizard, the sand lizard, and the chameleon.

and the gecko, and the land-crocodile, and the lizard, and the sand-lizard, and the chameleon.

31 T hese are unclean to you among all that creep; whoever touches them when they are dead shall be unclean until the evening.

These are they which are unclean to you among all that creep: whosoever doth touch them, when they are dead, shall be unclean until the even.

32 A nd upon whatever they may fall when they are dead, it shall be unclean, whether it is an article of wood or clothing or skin (bottle) or sack, any vessel in which work is done; it must be put in water, and it shall be unclean until the evening; so it shall be cleansed.

And upon whatsoever any of them, when they are dead, doth fall, it shall be unclean; whether it be any vessel of wood, or raiment, or skin, or sack, whatsoever vessel it be, wherewith any work is done, it must be put into water, and it shall be unclean until the even; then shall it be clean.

33 A nd every earthen vessel into which any of these falls, whatever may be in it shall be unclean, and you shall break the vessel.

And every earthen vessel, whereinto any of them falleth, whatsoever is in it shall be unclean, and it ye shall break.

34 O f all the food which may be eaten, that on which such water comes shall be unclean, and all drink that may be drunk from every such vessel shall be unclean.

All food therein which may be eaten, that on which water cometh, shall be unclean; and all drink that may be drunk in every such vessel shall be unclean.

35 A nd everything upon which any part of their carcass falls shall be unclean; whether an oven, or pan with a lid, or hearth for pots, it shall be broken in pieces; they are unclean, and shall be unclean to you.

And every thing whereupon any part of their carcass falleth shall be unclean; whether oven, or range for pots, it shall be broken in pieces: they are unclean, and shall be unclean unto you.

36 Y et a spring or a cistern or reservoir of water shall be clean; but whoever touches their carcass shall be unclean.

Nevertheless a fountain or a pit wherein is a gathering of water shall be clean: but that which toucheth their carcass shall be unclean.

37 I f a part of their carcass falls on seed which is to be sown, it shall be clean;

And if aught of their carcass fall upon any sowing seed which is to be sown, it is clean.

38 B ut if any water be put on the seed and any part of their carcass falls on it, it shall be unclean to you.

But if water be put upon the seed, and aught of their carcass fall thereon, it is unclean unto you.

39 I f any animal of which you may eat dies, he who touches its carcass shall be unclean until the evening.

And if any beast, of which ye may eat, die; he that toucheth the carcass thereof shall be unclean until the even.

40 A nd he who eats of its carcass shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the evening; he also who carries its carcass shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the evening.

And he that eateth of the carcass of it shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even: he also that beareth the carcass of it shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even.

41 A nd everything that creeps on the ground and swarms shall be an abomination; it shall not be eaten.

And every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth is an abomination; it shall not be eaten.

42 W hatever goes on its belly, and whatever goes on all fours, or whatever has more feet among all things that creep on the ground and swarm you shall not eat; for they are detestable.

Whatsoever goeth upon the belly, and whatsoever goeth upon all fours, or whatsoever hath many feet, even all creeping things that creep upon the earth, them ye shall not eat; for they are an abomination.

43 Y ou shall not make yourselves loathsome and abominable any swarming thing that swarms, neither shall you make yourselves unclean with them, that you should be defiled by them.

Ye shall not make yourselves abominable with any creeping thing that creepeth, neither shall ye make yourselves unclean with them, that ye should be defiled thereby.

44 F or I am the Lord your God; so consecrate yourselves and be holy, for I am holy; neither defile yourselves with any manner of thing that multiplies in large numbers or swarms.

For I am Jehovah your God: sanctify yourselves therefore, and be ye holy; for I am holy: neither shall ye defile yourselves with any manner of creeping thing that moveth upon the earth.

45 F or I am the Lord Who brought you up out of the land of Egypt to be your God; therefore you shall be holy, for I am holy.

For I am Jehovah that brought you up out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: ye shall therefore be holy, for I am holy.

46 T his is the law of the beast, and of the bird, and of every living creature that moves in the waters, and creeps on the earth and multiplies in large numbers,

This is the law of the beast, and of the bird, and of every living creature that moveth in the waters, and of every creature that creepeth upon the earth;

47 T o make a difference (a distinction) between the unclean and the clean, and between the animal that may be eaten and the animal that may not be eaten.

to make a distinction between the unclean and the clean, and between the living thing that may be eaten and the living thing that may not be eaten.
