1 S ave me, O God, for the waters have come up to my neck.

Save me, O God; For the waters are come in unto my soul.

2 I sink in deep mire, where there is no foothold; I have come into deep waters, where the floods overwhelm me.

I sink in deep mire, where there is no standing: I am come into deep waters, where the floods overflow me.

3 I am weary with my crying; my throat is parched; my eyes fail with waiting for my God.

I am weary with my crying; my throat is dried: Mine eyes fail while I wait for my God.

4 T hose who hate me without cause are more than the hairs of my head; those who would cut me off and destroy me, being my enemies wrongfully, are many and mighty. I am to restore what I did not steal.

They that hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of my head: They that would cut me off, being mine enemies wrongfully, are mighty: That which I took not away I have to restore.

5 O God, You know my folly and blundering; my sins and my guilt are not hidden from You.

O God, thou knowest my foolishness; And my sins are not hid from thee.

6 L et not those who wait and hope and look for You, O Lord of hosts, be put to shame through me; let not those who seek and inquire for and require You be brought to confusion and dishonor through me, O God of Israel.

Let not them that wait for thee be put to shame through me, O Lord Jehovah of hosts: Let not those that seek thee be brought to dishonor through me, O God of Israel.

7 B ecause for Your sake I have borne taunt and reproach; confusion and shame have covered my face.

Because for thy sake I have borne reproach; Shame hath covered my face.

8 I have become a stranger to my brethren, and an alien to my mother’s children.

I am become a stranger unto my brethren, And an alien unto my mother's children.

9 F or zeal for Your house has eaten me up, and the reproaches and insults of those who reproach and insult You have fallen upon me.

For the zeal of thy house hath eaten me up; And the reproaches of them that reproach thee are fallen upon me.

10 W hen I wept and humbled myself with fasting, I was jeered at and humiliated;

When I wept, and chastened my soul with fasting, That was to my reproach.

11 W hen I made sackcloth my clothing, I became a byword (an object of scorn) to them.

When I made sackcloth my clothing, I became a byword unto them.

12 T hey who sit in gate talk about me, and I am the song of the drunkards.

They that sit in the gate talk of me; And I am the song of the drunkards.

13 B ut as for me, my prayer is to You, O Lord. At an acceptable and opportune time, O God, in the multitude of Your mercy and the abundance of Your loving-kindness hear me, and in the truth and faithfulness of Your salvation answer me.

But as for me, my prayer is unto thee, O Jehovah, in an acceptable time: O God, in the abundance of thy lovingkindness, Answer me in the truth of thy salvation.

14 R escue me out of the mire, and let me not sink; let me be delivered from those who hate me and from out of the deep waters.

Deliver me out of the mire, and let me not sink: Let me be delivered from them that hate me, and out of the deep waters.

15 L et not the floodwaters overflow and overwhelm me, neither let the deep swallow me up nor the pit close its mouth over me.

Let not the waterflood overwhelm me, Neither let the deep shallow me up; And let not the pit shut its mouth upon me.

16 H ear and answer me, O Lord, for Your loving-kindness is sweet and comforting; according to Your plenteous tender mercy and steadfast love turn to me.

Answer me, O Jehovah; for thy lovingkindness is good: According to the multitude of thy tender mercies turn thou unto me.

17 H ide not Your face from Your servant, for I am in distress; O answer me speedily!

And hide not thy face from thy servant; For I am in distress; answer me speedily.

18 D raw close to me and redeem me; ransom and set me free because of my enemies!

Draw nigh unto my soul, and redeem it: Ransom me because of mine enemies.

19 Y ou know my reproach and my shame and my dishonor; my adversaries are all before You.

Thou knowest my reproach, and my shame, and my dishonor: Mine adversaries are all before thee.

20 I nsults and reproach have broken my heart; I am full of heaviness and I am distressingly sick. I looked for pity, but there was none, and for comforters, but I found none.

Reproach hath broken my heart; and I am full of heaviness: And I looked for some to take pity, but there was none; And for comforters, but I found none.

21 T hey gave me also gall for my food, and in my thirst they gave me vinegar (a soured wine) to drink.

They gave me also gall for my food; And in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.

22 L et their own table become a snare to them; and when they are secure in peace a trap to them.

Let their table before them become a snare; And when they are in peace, let it become a trap.

23 L et their eyes be darkened so that they cannot see, and make their loins tremble continually.

Let their eyes be darkened, so that they cannot see; And make their loins continually to shake.

24 P our out Your indignation upon them, and let the fierceness of Your burning anger catch up with them.

Pour out thine indignation upon them, And let the fierceness of thine anger overtake them.

25 L et their habitation and their encampment be a desolation; let no one dwell in their tents.

Let their habitation be desolate; Let none dwell in their tents.

26 F or they pursue and persecute him whom You have smitten, and they gossip about those whom You have wounded, to their grief and pain.

For they persecute him whom thou hast smitten; And they tell of the sorrow of those whom thou hast wounded.

27 L et one perverseness and iniquity accumulate upon another for them, and let them not come into Your righteousness or be justified and acquitted by You.

Add iniquity unto their iniquity; And let them not come into thy righteousness.

28 L et them be blotted out of the book of the living and the book of life and not be enrolled among the righteous (those upright and in right standing with God).

Let them be blotted out of the book of life, And not be written with the righteous.

29 B ut I am poor, sorrowful, and in pain; let Your salvation, O God, set me up on high.

But I am poor and sorrowful: Let thy salvation, O God, set me up on high.

30 I will praise the name of God with a song and will magnify Him with thanksgiving,

I will praise the name of God with a song, And will magnify him with thanksgiving.

31 A nd it will please the Lord better than an ox or a bullock that has horns and hoofs.

And it will please Jehovah better than an ox, Or a bullock that hath horns and hoofs.

32 T he humble shall see it and be glad; you who seek God, inquiring for and requiring Him, let your hearts revive and live!

The meek have seen it, and are glad: Ye that seek after God, let your heart live.

33 F or the Lord hears the poor and needy and despises not His prisoners (His miserable and wounded ones).

For Jehovah heareth the needy, And despiseth not his prisoners.

34 L et heaven and earth praise Him, the seas and everything that moves in them.

Let heaven and earth praise him, The seas, and everything that moveth therein.

35 F or God will save Zion and rebuild the cities of Judah; and shall remain and dwell there and have it in their possession;

For God will save Zion, and build the cities of Judah; And they shall abide there, and have it in possession.

36 T he children of His servants shall inherit it, and those who love His name shall dwell in it.

The seed also of his servants shall inherit it; And they that love his name shall dwell therein.
