1 A nd Jacob raised his eyes and looked, and behold, Esau was coming and with him 400 men. So he divided the children to Leah and to Rachel and to the two maids.
And Jacob lifted up his eyes, and looked, and, behold, Esau was coming, and with him four hundred men. And he divided the children unto Leah, and unto Rachel, and unto the two handmaids.
2 A nd he put the maids and their children in front, Leah and her children after them, and Rachel and Joseph last of all.
And he put the handmaids and their children foremost, and Leah and her children after, and Rachel and Joseph hindermost.
3 T hen Jacob went over before them and bowed himself to the ground seven times, until he came near to his brother.
And he himself passed over before them, and bowed himself to the ground seven times, until he came near to his brother.
4 B ut Esau ran to meet him, and embraced him and fell on his neck and kissed him, and they wept.

5 l ooked up and saw the women and the children and said, Who are these with you? And replied, They are the children whom God has graciously given your servant.

6 T hen the maids came near, they and their children, and they bowed themselves.
Then the handmaids came near, they and their children, and they bowed themselves.
7 A nd Leah also with her children came near, and they bowed themselves. After them Joseph and Rachel came near, and they bowed themselves.
And Leah also and her children came near, and bowed themselves: and after came Joseph near and Rachel, and they bowed themselves.
8 E sau said, What do you mean by all this company which I met? And he said, These are that I might find favor in the sight of my lord.
And he said, What meanest thou by all this company which I met? And he said, To find favor in the sight of my lord.
9 A nd Esau said, I have plenty, my brother; keep what you have for yourself.
And Esau said, I have enough, my brother; let that which thou hast be thine.
10 B ut Jacob replied, No, I beg of you, if now I have found favor in your sight, receive my gift that I am presenting; for truly to see your face is to me as if I had seen the face of God, and you have received me favorably.
And Jacob said, Nay, I pray thee, if now I have found favor in thy sight, then receive my present at my hand; forasmuch as I have seen thy face, as one seeth the face of God, and thou wast pleased with me.
11 A ccept, I beg of you, my blessing and gift that I have brought to you; for God has dealt graciously with me and I have everything. And he kept urging him and he accepted it.
Take, I pray thee, my gift that is brought to thee; because God hath dealt graciously with me, and because I have enough. And he urged him, and he took it.
12 T hen said, Let us get started on our journey, and I will go before you.
And he said, Let us take our journey, and let us go, and I will go before thee.
13 B ut Jacob replied, You know, my lord, that the children are tender and delicate and need gentle care, and the flocks and herds with young are of concern to me; for if the men should overdrive them for a single day, the whole of the flocks would die.
And he said unto him, My lord knoweth that the children are tender, and that the flocks and herds with me have their young: and if they overdrive them one day, all the flocks will die.
14 L et my lord, I pray you, pass over before his servant; and I will lead on slowly, governed by the livestock that set the pace before me and the endurance of the children, until I come to my lord in Seir.
Let my lord, I pray thee, pass over before his servant: and I will lead on gently, according to the pace of the cattle that are before me and according to the pace of the children, until I come unto my lord unto Seir.
15 T hen Esau said, Let me now leave with you some of the people who are with me. But said, What need is there for it? Let me find favor in the sight of my lord.
And Esau said, Let me now leave with thee some of the folk that are with me. And he said, What needeth it? let me find favor in the sight of my lord.
16 S o Esau turned back that day on his way to Seir.
So Esau returned that day on his way unto Seir.
17 B ut Jacob journeyed to Succoth and built himself a house and made booths or places of shelter for his livestock; so the name of the place is called Succoth.

18 W hen Jacob came from Padan-aram, he arrived safely and in peace at the town of Shechem, in the land of Canaan, and pitched his tents before the town.
And Jacob came in peace to the city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, when he came from Paddan-aram; and encamped before the city.
19 T hen he bought the piece of land on which he had encamped from the sons of Hamor, Shechem’s father, for a hundred pieces of money.
And he bought the parcel of ground, where he had spread his tent, at the hand of the children of Hamor, Shechem's father, for a hundred pieces of money.
20 T here he erected an altar and called it El-Elohe-Israel.
And he erected there an altar, and called it El-elohe-israel.
