1 A nd Adam knew Eve as his wife, and she became pregnant and bore Cain; and she said, I have gotten and gained a man with the help of the Lord.

And the man knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man with the help of Jehovah.

2 A nd she gave birth to his brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.

And again she bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.

3 A nd in the course of time Cain brought to the Lord an offering of the fruit of the ground.

And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto Jehovah.

4 A nd Abel brought of the firstborn of his flock and of the fat portions. And the Lord had respect and regard for Abel and for his offering,

And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And Jehovah had respect unto Abel and to his offering:

5 B ut for Cain and his offering He had no respect or regard. So Cain was exceedingly angry and indignant, and he looked sad and depressed.

but unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.

6 A nd the Lord said to Cain, Why are you angry? And why do you look sad and depressed and dejected?

And Jehovah said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen?

7 I f you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin crouches at your door; its desire is for you, but you must master it.

If thou doest well, shall it not be lifted up? and if thou doest not well, sin coucheth at the door: and unto thee shall be its desire, but do thou rule over it.

8 A nd Cain said to his brother, Let us go out to the field. And when they were in the field, Cain rose up against Abel his brother and killed him.

And Cain told Abel his brother. And it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.

9 A nd the Lord said to Cain, Where is Abel your brother? And he said, I do not know. Am I my brother’s keeper?

And Jehovah said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: am I my brother's keeper?

10 A nd said, What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood is crying to Me from the ground.

And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground.

11 A nd now you are cursed by reason of the earth, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand.

And now cursed art thou from the ground, which hath opened its mouth to receive thy brother's blood from thy hand;

12 W hen you till the ground, it shall no longer yield to you its strength; you shall be a fugitive and a vagabond on the earth.

when thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee its strength; a fugitive and a wanderer shalt thou be in the earth.

13 T hen Cain said to the Lord, My punishment is greater than I can bear.

And Cain said unto Jehovah, My punishment is greater than I can bear.

14 B ehold, You have driven me out this day from the face of the land, and from Your face I will be hidden; and I will be a fugitive and a vagabond and a wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.

Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the ground; and from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a wanderer in the earth; and it will come to pass, that whosoever findeth me will slay me.

15 A nd the Lord said to him, Therefore, if anyone kills Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the Lord set a mark or sign upon Cain, lest anyone finding him should kill him.

And Jehovah said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And Jehovah appointed a sign for Cain, lest any finding him should smite him.

16 S o Cain went away from the presence of the Lord and dwelt in the land of Nod, east of Eden.

And Cain went out from the presence of Jehovah, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden.

17 A nd Cain’s wife became pregnant and bore Enoch; and Cain built a city and named it after his son Enoch.

And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bare Enoch: and he builded a city, and called the name of the city, after the name of his son, Enoch.

18 T o Enoch was born Irad, and Irad was the father of Mehujael, and Mehujael the father of Methusael, and Methusael the father of Lamech.

And unto Enoch was born Irad: and Irad begat Mehujael: and Mehujael begat Methushael; and Methushael begat Lamech.

19 A nd Lamech took two wives; the name of the one was Adah and of the other was Zillah.

And Lamech took unto him two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah.

20 A dah bore Jabal; he was the father of those who dwell in tents and have cattle and purchase possessions.

And Adah bare Jabal: he was the father of such as dwell in tents and have cattle.

21 H is brother’s name was Jubal; he was the father of all those who play the lyre and pipe.

And his brother's name was Jubal: he was the father of all such as handle the harp and pipe.

22 Z illah bore Tubal-cain; he was the forger of all instruments of bronze and iron. The sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah.

And Zillah, she also bare Tubal-cain, the forger of every cutting instrument of brass and iron: and the sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah.

23 L amech said to his wives, Adah and Zillah, Hear my voice; you wives of Lamech, listen to what I say; for I have slain a man for wounding me, and a young man for striking and bruising me.

And Lamech said unto his wives: Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; Ye wives of Lamech, hearken unto my speech: For I have slain a man for wounding me, And a young man for bruising me:

24 I f Cain is avenged sevenfold, truly Lamech seventy-sevenfold.

If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, Truly Lamech seventy and sevenfold.

25 A nd Adam’s wife again became pregnant, and she bore a son and called his name Seth. For God, she said, has appointed for me another child instead of Abel, for Cain slew him.

And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth. For, said she, God hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel; for Cain slew him.

26 A nd to Seth also a son was born, whom he named Enosh. At that time men began to call by the name of the Lord.

And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enosh. Then began men to call upon the name of Jehovah.
