1 I ov a luat cuvîntul şi a zis:

Then Job answered and said,

2 b ine că este aşa. Şi cum ar putea omul să-şi scoată dreptate înaintea lui Dumnezeu?

I know it is so of a truth: but how should man be just with God?

3 D acă ar voi să se certe cu El, din o mie de lucruri n'ar putea să răspundă la unul singur.

If he will contend with him, he cannot answer him one of a thousand.

4 A Lui este înţelepciunea, şi atotputernicia: cine I s'ar putea împotrivi fără să fie pedepsit?

He is wise in heart, and mighty in strength: who hath hardened himself against him, and hath prospered?

5 E l mută deodată munţii, şi -i răstoarnă în mînia Sa.

Which removeth the mountains, and they know not: which overturneth them in his anger.

6 Z guduie pămîntul din temelia lui, de i se clatină stîlpii.

Which shaketh the earth out of her place, and the pillars thereof tremble.

7 P orunceşte soarelui, şi soarele nu mai răsare; şi ţine stelele supt pecetea Lui.

Which commandeth the sun, and it riseth not; and sealeth up the stars.

8 N umai El întinde cerurile, şi umblă pe înălţimile mării.

Which alone spreadeth out the heavens, and treadeth upon the waves of the sea.

9 E l a făcut Ursul mare, luceafărul de seară şi Raliţele, şi stelele din ţinuturile de miazăzi.

Which maketh Arcturus, Orion, and Pleiades, and the chambers of the south.

10 E l face lucruri mari şi nepătrunse, minuni fără număr.

Which doeth great things past finding out; yea, and wonders without number.

11 I ată, El trece pe lîngă mine, şi nu -L văd, se duce şi nu -L zăresc.

Lo, he goeth by me, and I see him not: he passeth on also, but I perceive him not.

12 D acă apucă El, cine -L va opri? Cine -I va zice:,, Ce faci?``

Behold, he taketh away, who can hinder him? who will say unto him, What doest thou?

13 D umnezeu nu-Şi întoarce mînia; supt El se pleacă toţi sprijinitorii mîndriei.

If God will not withdraw his anger, the proud helpers do stoop under him.

14 Ş i eu, cum să -I răspund? Ce cuvinte să aleg?

How much less shall I answer him, and choose out my words to reason with him?

15 C hiar dacă aş avea dreptate, nu I-aş răspunde. Nu pot decît să mă rog judecătorului.

Whom, though I were righteous, yet would I not answer, but I would make supplication to my judge.

16 Ş i chiar dacă m'ar asculta, cînd Îl chem, tot n'aş putea crede că mi'a ascultat glasul;

If I had called, and he had answered me; yet would I not believe that he had hearkened unto my voice.

17 E l, care mă izbeşte ca într'o furtună, care îmi înmulţeşte fără pricină rănile,

For he breaketh me with a tempest, and multiplieth my wounds without cause.

18 c are nu mă lasă să răsuflu, mă satură de amărăciune.

He will not suffer me to take my breath, but filleth me with bitterness.

19 S ă alerg la putere? El este atotputernic. La dreptate? Cine mă va apăra?

If I speak of strength, lo, he is strong: and if of judgment, who shall set me a time to plead?

20 O ricîtă dreptate aş avea, gura mea mă va osîndi; şi oricît de nevinovat aş fi, El mă va arăta ca vinovat.

If I justify myself, mine own mouth shall condemn me: if I say, I am perfect, it shall also prove me perverse.

21 N evinovat! Sînt; dar nu ţin la viaţă, îmi dispreţuiesc viaţa.

Though I were perfect, yet would I not know my soul: I would despise my life.

22 C e-mi pasă la urma urmei? Căci, îndrăznesc s'o spun: El nimiceşte pe cel nevinovat ca şi pe cel vinovat.

This is one thing, therefore I said it, He destroyeth the perfect and the wicked.

23 Ş i dacă biciul ar pricinui măcar îndată moartea!... Dar El rîde de încercările celui nevinovat.

If the scourge slay suddenly, he will laugh at the trial of the innocent.

24 P ămîntul este dat pe mînile celui nelegiuit; El acopere ochii judecătorilor; de nu El, apoi cine altul?

The earth is given into the hand of the wicked: he covereth the faces of the judges thereof; if not, where, and who is he?

25 Z ilele mele aleargă mai iuţi decît un alergător; fug fără să fi văzut fericirea;

Now my days are swifter than a post: they flee away, they see no good.

26 t rec ca şi corăbiile cele iuţi, ca vulturul care se răpede asupra prăzii.

They are passed away as the swift ships: as the eagle that hasteth to the prey.

27 D acă zic:, Vreau să-mi uit suferinţele, să-mi las întristarea, şi să fiu voios,`

If I say, I will forget my complaint, I will leave off my heaviness, and comfort myself:

28 s înt îngrozit de toate durerile mele. Ştiu că nu mă vei scoate nevinovat.

I am afraid of all my sorrows, I know that thou wilt not hold me innocent.

29 Ş i dacă voi fi judecat vinovat, pentruce să mă mai trudesc degeaba?

If I be wicked, why then labour I in vain?

30 C hiar dacă m'aş spăla cu zăpadă, chiar dacă mi-aş curăţi mînile cu leşie,

If I wash myself with snow water, and make my hands never so clean;

31 T u tot m'ai cufunda în mocirlă, de s'ar scîrbi pînă şi hainele de mine!

yet shalt thou plunge me in the ditch, and mine own clothes shall abhor me.

32 C ăci El nu este un om ca mine, ca să -I pot răspunde, şi să mergem împreună la judecată.

For he is not a man, as I am, that I should answer him, and we should come together in judgment.

33 N ici nu este vreun mijlocitor între noi, care să-şi pună mîna peste noi amîndoi.

Neither is there any daysman betwixt us, that might lay his hand upon us both.

34 S ă-Şi tragă însă varga deasupra mea, şi să nu mă mai turbure spaima Lui.

Let him take his rod away from me, and let not his fear terrify me:

35 A tunci voi vorbi şi nu mă voi teme de El. Altfel, nu sînt stăpîn pe mine.

then would I speak, and not fear him; but it is not so with me.
