1 T hese were the sons of Israel, the heads of fathers’ houses. They were the leaders of thousands and of hundreds. These were the captains who worked for the king in anything to do with the armies which came in and went out every month of the year. There were 24, 000 men in each army.

¶ Now the sons of Israel after their number, who were chief fathers and captains of thousands and hundreds, and their officers that served the king in any matter of the courses, who came in and went out month by month throughout all the months of the year, each course was of twenty-four thousand.

2 J ashobeam the son of Zabdiel was the leader of the first army for the first month. There were 24, 000 in his army.

Over the first course for the first month was Jashobeam, the son of Zabdiel, and in his course were twenty-four thousand.

3 H e was a son of Perez, and head of all the captains of the army for the first month.

Of the sons of Perez was the chief of all the captains of the host for the first month.

4 D odai the Ahohite was the leader of the army for the second month. Mikloth was the head captain. There were 24, 000 in his army.

And over the course of the second month was Dodai, an Ahohite, and in his course was prince Mikloth; in his course likewise were twenty-four thousand.

5 T he third leader of the army for the third month was Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada the religious leader. There were 24, 000 in his army.

The third captain of the host for the third month was Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada, a chief priest: and in his course were twenty-four thousand.

6 T his is the Benaiah who was the strong man of the thirty, and leader of the thirty. Ammizabad his son was captain of his army.

This is that Benaiah, who was mighty among the thirty, and above the thirty; and in his course was Ammizabad, his son.

7 T he fourth leader for the fourth month was Asahel the brother of Joab, and Zebadiah his son after him. There were 24, 000 in his army.

The fourth for the fourth month was Asahel, the brother of Joab, and Zebadiah his son after him; and in his course were twenty-four thousand.

8 T he fifth leader for the fifth month was Shamhuth the Izrahite. There were 24, 000 in his army.

The fifth for the fifth month was prince Shamhuth, the Izrahite; and in his course were twenty-four thousand.

9 T he sixth for the sixth month was Ira the son of Ikkesh the Tekoite. There were 24, 000 in his army.

The sixth for the sixth month was Ira, the son of Ikkesh of Tekoah; and in his course were twenty-four thousand.

10 T he seventh for the seventh month was Helez the Pelonite of the sons of Ephraim. There were 24, 000 in his army.

The seventh for the seventh month was Helez, the Pelonite, of the sons of Ephraim; and in his course were twenty-four thousand.

11 T he eighth for the eighth month was Sibbecai the Hushathite of the Zerahites. There were 24, 000 in his army.

The eighth for the eighth month was Sibbecai, the Hushathite, of Zarhi; and in his course were twenty-four thousand.

12 T he ninth for the ninth month was Abiezer the Anathothite of the Benjamites. There were 24, 000 in his army.

The ninth for the ninth month was Abiezer, the Anetothite, of the Benjamites; and in his course were twenty-four thousand.

13 T he tenth for the tenth month was Maharai the Netophathite of the Zerahites. There were 24, 000 in his army.

The tenth for the tenth month was Maharai, the Netophathite of Zarhi; and in his course were twenty-four thousand.

14 T he eleventh for the eleventh month was Benaiah the Pirathonite of the sons of Ephraim. There were 24, 000 in his army.

The eleventh for the eleventh month was Benaiah, the Pirathonite, of the sons of Ephraim; and in his course were twenty-four thousand.

15 T he twelfth for the twelfth month was Heldai the Netophathite of Othniel. There were 24, 000 in his army. Leaders of Family Groups

The twelfth for the twelfth month was Heldai, the Netophathite of Othniel; and in his course were twenty-four thousand.

16 T he leaders of the family groups of Israel were: Eliezer the son of Zichri was the head captain of the Reubenites; Shephatiah the son of Maacah led the Simeonites.

¶ Presiding, likewise, over the tribes of Israel: over the Reubenites was prince Eliezer, the son of Zichri; over the Simeonites, Shephatiah, the son of Maachah.

17 H ashabiah the son of Kemuel led the sons of Levi; Zadok led the sons of Aaron.

Over the Levites, Hashabiah, the son of Kemuel. Over the Aaronites, Zadok.

18 E lihu, one of David’s brothers, led the sons of Judah; Omri the son of Michael led the sons of Issachar;

Over Judah, Elihu, one of the brethren of David. Over those of Issachar, Omri, the son of Michael.

19 I shmaiah the son of Obadiah led the sons of Zebulun; Jeremoth the son of Azriel led the sons of Naphtali;

Over those of Zebulun, Ishmaiah, the son of Obadiah. Over those of Naphtali, Jerimoth, the son of Azriel.

20 H oshea the son of Azaziah led the sons of Ephraim; Joel the son of Pedaiah led the half-family group of Manasseh;

Over the sons of Ephraim, Hosea, the son of Azaziah. Over the half tribe of Manasseh, Joel, the son of Pedaiah.

21 I ddo the son of Zechariah led the half-family group of Manasseh in Gilead; Jaasiel the son of Abner led the sons of Benjamin;

Over the other half tribe of Manasseh in Gilead, Iddo, the son of Zechariah. Over those of Benjamin, Jaasiel, the son of Abner.

22 A nd Azarel the son of Jeroham led the sons of Dan. These were the leaders of the families of Israel.

And over Dan, Azareel, the son of Jeroham. These were the princes of the tribes of Israel.

23 B ut David did not number those younger than twenty years old because the Lord had promised to make Israel many, as the stars of heaven.

But David did not number those twenty years old and under because the LORD had said he would multiply Israel like to the stars of the heavens.

24 J oab the son of Zeruiah had begun to number them, but did not finish. Anger came upon Israel because of this. So the number was not put into the book of the chronicles of King David.

Joab, the son of Zeruiah, had begun to number, but he did not finish; and because of this, wrath fell upon Israel; and thus the number was not put in the account of the chronicles of King David.

25 A zmaveth the son of Adiel was over the king’s store-houses. Jonathan the son of Uzziah was over the store-houses in the country, in the cities, in the towns, and in the towers.

And Azmaveth, the son of Adiel, had charge of the king’s treasures and of the treasures of the fields, of the cities, and of the villages, and of the castles, was Jehonathan, the son of Uzziah;

26 E zri the son of Chelub was over those who worked in the fields, plowing and planting.

and over those that did the work of the tillage of the ground in the fields was Ezri the son of Chelub;

27 S himei the Ramathite was over the grape-fields. Zabdi the Shiphmite was over the fruit of the grape-fields for the wine.

and over the vineyards was Shimei, the Ramathite; over the increase of the vineyards for the wine cellars was Zabdi, the Shiphmite;

28 B aalhanan the Gederite was over the olive and sycamore trees in the plains. Joash was captain of the stores of oil.

and over the olive trees and the sycamore trees that were in the low plains was Baalhanan, the Gederite; and over the cellars of oil, Joash;

29 S hitrai the Sharonite was over the cattle which were eating in the fields of Sharon. Shaphat the son of Adlai was over the cattle in the valleys.

and over the cows that fed in Sharon was Shitrai, the Sharonite; and over the cows that were in the valleys was Shaphat, the son of Adlai;

30 O bil the Ishmaelite was over the camels. Jehdeiah the Meronothite was over the donkeys.

over the camels, Obil, the Ishmaelite; and over the asses, Jehdeiah, the Meronothite;

31 A nd Jaziz the Hagrite was over the flocks. All these were over all that belonged to King David.

and over the sheep was Jaziz, the Hagerite. All these were the princes of the substance which was King David’s.

32 J onathan, the brother of David’s father, used much wisdom talking with people. And he was a writer. Jehiel the son of Hachmoni taught the king’s sons.

And Jonathan, David’s uncle, was a counsellor, a wise man, and a scribe; and Jehiel the son of Hachmoni had charge of the king’s sons.

33 A hithophel talked about problems with the king. Hushai the Archite was the king’s friend.

Ahithophel was the king’s counsellor; and Hushai, the Archite, was the king’s companion.

34 J ehoiada the son of Benaiah, and Abaiathar, talked with the king after Ahithophel. And Joab was the captain of the king’s army.

And after Ahithophel was Jehoiada, the son of Benaiah, and Abiathar. And Joab was the general of the king’s army.
