1 و َذَهَبَ رَحُبْعامُ إلَى مَدِينَةِ شَكِيمَ لأنَّ جَميعَ بَنِي إسْرائِيلَ ذَهَبُوا إلَى هُناكَ لِكَي يُبايِعُوهُ مَلِكاً.

Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all Israel had gone to Shechem to make him king.

2 و َكانَ يَرُبْعامُ بنُ نَباطَ فِي مصْرَ لِأنَّهُ فَرَّ مِنْ وَجهِ المَلِكِ سُلَيْمانَ. وَسَمعَ يَرُبْعامُ أنَّ رَحُبْعامَ سَيَكُونُ المَلكَ الجَدِيدَ، فَرَجِعَ منْ مصْرَ.

Jeroboam the son of Nebat was in Egypt, where he had fled from the presence of King Solomon, when he heard about the new king; so Jeroboam returned from Egypt.

3 ف َاستَدْعَى بَنُو إسْرائِيلَ يَرُبْعامَ، فَجاءَ مِنْ مِصرَ، وَذَهَبَ مَعَ كُلَّ بَنِي إسْرائِيلَ إلَى رَحُبْعامَ. وَقالُوا لَهُ:

And the people sent for him. So Jeroboam and all Israel came to Rehoboam, saying,

4 « لَقَدْ صَعَّبَ أبُوكَ حَياتَنا. فَكانَ ذَلِكَ عِبئاً ثَقيلاً عَلَينا. وَالآنَ خَفِّفْ حِملَنا فَنَخْدِمَكَ.»

Your father made our yoke grievous. So now make lighter the grievous service of your father and his heavy yoke that he put upon us, and we will serve you.

5 ف َقالَ لَهُمْ رَحُبْعامُ: «عُودُوا إلَيَّ بَعدَ ثَلاثَةِ أيّامٍ.» فَانصَرَفَ الشَّعبُ.

Rehoboam replied, Come again to me after three days. And the people departed.

6 ف َاسْتَشارَ المَلِكُ رَحُبْعامُ بَعضَ الشُّيُوخِ الَّذِينَ عَمِلُوا مُسْتَشارِينَ لِأبِيهِ سُلَيْمانَ فِي حَياتِهِ وَسَألَهُمْ: «بِماذا أرُدُّ عَلَى الشَّعبٍ؟»

King Rehoboam took counsel with the old men who stood before Solomon his father while he was alive, saying, What counsel do you give me in reply to the people?

7 ف َقالَ الشُّيُوخُ لرَحُبْعامَ: «إذا كُنتَ لَطِيفاً مَعَ هَذا الشَّعبِ وَأرْضَيتَهُمْ بِكَلامٍ حَسَنٍ، حِينَئِذٍ، سَيَخدمُونَكَ وَيَكُونُونَ طَوْعَ أمْرِكَ إلَى الأبَدِ.»

And they answered him, If you are kind to people and please them and speak good words to them, they will be your servants forever.

8 ل َكِنَّ رَحُبْعامَ لَمْ يَستَمِعْ إلَى نَصيحَتِهِمْ. فَسَألَ شُبّاناً صِغاراً نَشَأُوا مَعَهُ وَجَعَلَهُمْ مُسْتَشارِيهِ.

But the king forsook the counsel which the old men gave him and took counsel with the young men who were brought up with him and stood before him.

9 ق الَ لَهُمْ رَحُبْعامُ: «قالَ الشَّعبُ لِي: ‹خَفِّفِ الحِملَ الَّذِي وَضَعَهُ أبُوكَ عَلَى أكتافِنا›. فَبِماذا أرُدُّ عَلَيهِمْ؟»

And he said to them, What answer do you advise that we give to the demand of people, Make the yoke your father put upon us lighter?

10 ف َقالَ لَهُ أصحابُهُ الشُّبّانُ الَّذِينَ نَشَأُوا مَعَهُ: «قالَ لَكَ هَؤُلاءِ النّاسُ: ‹فَرَضَ عَلَينا أبُوكَ أشغالاً شاقَّةً. فَالآنَ خَفِّفِ الحِملَ عَنّا.› فَقُلْ لَهُمْ: ‹خِنْصَرِي أغلَظُ مِنْ جِسْمِ أبِي!

The young men who were brought up with him said to him, Tell the people who said to you, Your father made our yoke heavy, but you make it lighter: My little finger is thicker than my father’s loins.

11 ف َرَضَ أبِي عَلَيكُمْ حِملاً ثَقِيلاً، أمّا أنا فَسَأزِيدُ عَلَيهِ. أدَّبَكُمْ أبِي بِسِياطٍ مِنْ جِلدٍ، أمّا أنا فَسأؤدِّبُكُمْ بِسِياطٍ ذاتِ أطرافٍ حَدِيديَّةٍ!›»

For whereas my father put a heavy yoke upon you, I will add to your yoke. My father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.

12 و َبَعدَ ثَلاثَةِ أيّامٍ، رَجعَ يَرُبْعامُ وَكُلُّ الشَّعبِ إلَى رَحُبْعامَ إذْ قالَ لَهُمْ: «عُودُوا إلَيَّ بَعْدَ ثَلاثَةِ أيّامٍ.»

The third day Jeroboam and all the people returned to Rehoboam as he had said.

13 ف َتَكَلَّمَ إلَيْهِمْ بِطَرِيقَةٍ قاسِيَةٍ، تارِكاً نَصِيحَةَ الشُّيُوخِ.

And the king answered them harshly, forsaking the counsel of the old men,

14 ف َقالَ لَهُمْ ما نَصَحَهُ الشُّبّانُ بِهِ: «فَرَضَ أبِي عَلَيكُمْ حِملاً ثَقِيلاً، أمّا أنا فَسَأزِيدُ عَلَيهِ. أدَّبَكُمْ أبِي بِسِياطٍ مِنْ جِلدٍ، أمّا أنا فَسأؤدِّبُكُمْ بِسِياطٍ ذاتِ أطرافٍ حَدِيديَّةٍ!»

And answered them after the advice of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to it; my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.

15 ف َلَمْ يَسْتَجِبِ المَلِكُ لِطَلَبِ الشَّعبِ. وَقَدْ تَسَبَّبَ اللهُ فِي حُدُوثِ هَذا الأمْرِ لِكَي يَفِيَ اللهُ بِالوَعْدِ الَّذِي قَطَعَهُ لِيَرُبْعامَ بْنِ نَباطَ عَلَى فَمِ النَّبِيِّ أخِيّا الشِّيلُونِيِّ.

So the king did not heed the people, for it was brought about of God, that the Lord might perform His word which He spoke by Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam son of Nebat.

16 و َرَأى كُلُّ بَنِي إسْرائِيلَ أنَّ المَلِكَ الجَدِيدَ لَمْ يَسْتَمِعْ إلَيْهِمْ. فَقالُوا لِلمَلِكِ: «ما لَنا وَلِعائِلَةِ داوُدَ؟ ألَنا أيُّ مِيراثٍ فِي أرْضِ يَسَّى؟ فَلْنَذْهَبْ، نَحنُ بَنِي إسْرائِيلَ، كُلُّ واحِدٍ إلَى بَيتِهِ. وَلْنَدَعِ ابْنَ داوُدَ يَحْكُمْ جَماعَتَهُ!» فَذَهَبَ بَنُو إسْرائِيلَ إلَى بُيُوتِهِمْ.

And when all Israel saw that the king would not listen to and heed them, they answered, What portion have we in David? We have no inheritance in the son of Jesse. Every man to your tents, O Israel! Now, David, see to your own house! So all Israel went to their homes.

17 ف َلَمْ يَعُدْ رَحُبْعامُ يَحْكُمُ إلّا بَنِي إسْرائِيلَ السّاكِنِينَ فِي مُدُنِ يَهُوذا.

But as for the Israelites who dwelt in Judah’s cities, Rehoboam ruled over them.

18 و َكانَ هَدُورامُ أحَدَ المُشرِفِينَ عَلَى العُمّالِ. فَأرْسَلَهُ رَحُبْعامُ لِيَتَحَدَّثَ إلَى الشَّعبِ. لَكِنَّهُمْ رَجَمُوهُ حَتَّى المَوتِ. فَأسْرَعَ المَلِكُ رَحُبْعامُ إلَى مَرْكَبَتِهِ وَهَرَبَ إلَى مَدينَةِ القُدْسِ.

Then King Rehoboam sent Hadoram, who was over the forced labor, and the Israelites stoned him and he died. But King Rehoboam hastened to get up to his royal chariot to flee to Jerusalem.

19 ف َتَمَرَّدَ بَنُو إسْرائِيلَ عَلَى عائِلَةِ داوُدَ، وَمازالُوا كَذَلِكَ إلَى هَذا اليَومِ.

And Israel has rebelled against the house of David to this day.
