1 I nima împăratului este ca un rîu de apă în mîna Domnului, pe care îl îndreaptă încotro vrea. -

The king's heart is in the hand of the Lord, as the rivers of water: he turneth it whithersoever he will.

2 O mul socoteşte că toate căile lui sînt fără prihană, dar Cel ce cercetează inimile este Domnul. -

Every way of a man is right in his own eyes: but the Lord pondereth the hearts.

3 A face dreptate şi judecată, este mai plăcut Domnului decît jertfele. -

To do justice and judgment is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice.

4 P rivirile trufaşe şi inima îngîmfată, această candelă a celor răi, nu este decît păcat. -

An high look, and a proud heart, and the plowing of the wicked, is sin.

5 P lanurile omului harnic nu duc de cît la belşug, dar celce lucrează cu grabă n'ajunge de cît la lipsă. -

The thoughts of the diligent tend only to plenteousness; but of every one that is hasty only to want.

6 C omorile cîştigate cu o limbă mincinoasă sînt o deşertăciune care fuge, şi ele duc la moarte. -

The getting of treasures by a lying tongue is a vanity tossed to and fro of them that seek death.

7 S ilnicia celor răi îi mătură, pentrucă nu vor să facă ce este drept. -

The robbery of the wicked shall destroy them; because they refuse to do judgment.

8 C el vinovat merge pe căi sucite, dar cel nevinovat face ce este bine.

The way of man is froward and strange: but as for the pure, his work is right.

9 M ai bine să locuieşti într'un colţ pe acoperiş, decît cu o nevastă gîlcevitoare într'o casă mare. -

It is better to dwell in a corner of the housetop, than with a brawling woman in a wide house.

10 S ufletul celui rău doreşte răul, semenul lui n'are nici o trecere înaintea lui. -

The soul of the wicked desireth evil: his neighbour findeth no favour in his eyes.

11 C înd este pedepsit batjocoritorul, prostul se face înţelept: şi cînd se dă învăţătură celui înţelept, el capătă ştiinţa. -

When the scorner is punished, the simple is made wise: and when the wise is instructed, he receiveth knowledge.

12 C el neprihănit se uită la casa celui rău, şi vede ce repede sînt aruncaţi cei răi în nenorocire. -

The righteous man wisely considereth the house of the wicked: but God overthroweth the wicked for their wickedness.

13 C ine îşi astupă urechea la strigătul săracului, nici el nu va căpăta răspuns, cînd va striga. -

Whoso stoppeth his ears at the cry of the poor, he also shall cry himself, but shall not be heard.

14 U n dar făcut în taină potoleşte mînia, şi o mită dată pe ascuns potoleşte cea mai puternică mînie. -

A gift in secret pacifieth anger: and a reward in the bosom strong wrath.

15 E ste o bucurie pentru cel neprihănit să facă ce este bine, dar pentru ceice fac răul este o groază. -

It is joy to the just to do judgment: but destruction shall be to the workers of iniquity.

16 O mul care se abate dela calea înţelepciunii, se va odihni în adunarea celor morţi. -

The man that wandereth out of the way of understanding shall remain in the congregation of the dead.

17 C ine iubeşte petrecerile va duce lipsă, şi cine iubeşte vinul şi untdelemnul dresurilor nu se îmbogăţeşte. -

He that loveth pleasure shall be a poor man: he that loveth wine and oil shall not be rich.

18 C el rău slujeşte ca preţ de răscumpărare pentru cel neprihănit, şi cel stricat, pentru oamenii fără prihană. -

The wicked shall be a ransom for the righteous, and the transgressor for the upright.

19 M ai bine să locuieşti într'un pămînt pustiu, de cît cu o nevastă gîlcevitoare şi supărăcioasă. -

It is better to dwell in the wilderness, than with a contentious and an angry woman.

20 C omori de preţ şi untdedelemn sînt în locuinţa celui înţelept, dar omul fără minte le risipeşte. -

There is treasure to be desired and oil in the dwelling of the wise; but a foolish man spendeth it up.

21 C ine urmăreşte neprihănirea şi bunătatea, găseşte viaţă, neprihănire şi slavă. -

He that followeth after righteousness and mercy findeth life, righteousness, and honour.

22 Î nţeleptul cucereşte cetatea vitejilor, şi doboară puterea în care se încredeau. -

A wise man scaleth the city of the mighty, and casteth down the strength of the confidence thereof.

23 C ine îşi păzeşte gura şi limba, îşi scuteşte sufletul de multe necazuri. -

Whoso keepeth his mouth and his tongue keepeth his soul from troubles.

24 C el mîndru şi trufaş se cheamă batjocoritor: el lucrează cu aprinderea îngîmfării.

Proud and haughty scorner is his name, who dealeth in proud wrath.

25 P oftele leneşului îl omoară, pentrucă nu vrea să lucreze cu mînile. -

The desire of the slothful killeth him; for his hands refuse to labour.

26 T oată ziua o duce numai în pofte: dar cel neprihănit dă fără zgîrcenie. -

He coveteth greedily all the day long: but the righteous giveth and spareth not.

27 J ertfa celor răi este o scîrbă înaintea Domnului, cu cît mai mult cînd o aduc cu gînduri nelegiuite. -

The sacrifice of the wicked is abomination: how much more, when he bringeth it with a wicked mind?

28 M artorul mincinos va pieri, dar omul care ascultă bine va vorbi totdeauna cu izbîndă. -

A false witness shall perish: but the man that heareth speaketh constantly.

29 C el rău ia o înfăţişare neruşinată, dar omul fără prihană îşi îmbunătăţeşte calea. -

A wicked man hardeneth his face: but as for the upright, he directeth his way.

30 N ici înţelepciunea, nici priceperea, nici sfatul n'ajută împotriva Domnului. -

There is no wisdom nor understanding nor counsel against the Lord.

31 C alul este pregătit pentru ziua bătăliei, dar biruinţa este a Domnului. -

The horse is prepared against the day of battle: but safety is of the Lord.
