1 T hen the family heads of the Levites came to Eleazar the religious leader, Joshua the son of Nun, and the heads of the family groups of Israel.
Then the heads of the fathers’ houses of the Levites came near to Eleazar the priest, to Joshua the son of Nun, and to the heads of the fathers’ houses of the tribes of the children of Israel.
2 T hey said to them at Shiloh in Canaan, “The Lord said through Moses to give us cities to live in, as well as fields around them for our cattle.”
And they spoke to them at Shiloh in the land of Canaan, saying, “The Lord commanded through Moses to give us cities to dwell in, with their common-lands for our livestock.”
3 S o the sons of Israel gave these cities and fields of their land to the Levites, as the Lord had said.
So the children of Israel gave to the Levites from their inheritance, at the commandment of the Lord, these cities and their common-lands:
4 T he name drawn first was for the families of the Kohathites. The Levites who were children of Aaron the religious leader received thirteen cities from the families of Judah, Simeon and Benjamin.
Now the lot came out for the families of the Kohathites. And the children of Aaron the priest, who were of the Levites, had thirteen cities by lot from the tribe of Judah, from the tribe of Simeon, and from the tribe of Benjamin.
5 T he rest of the sons of Kohath by drawing names received ten cities from the families of Ephraim and Dan and the half-family group of Manasseh.
The rest of the children of Kohath had ten cities by lot from the families of the tribe of Ephraim, from the tribe of Dan, and from the half-tribe of Manasseh.
6 T he sons of Gershon by drawing names received thirteen cities from the families of Issachar, Asher, Naphtali and the half-family group of Manasseh in Bashan.
And the children of Gershon had thirteen cities by lot from the families of the tribe of Issachar, from the tribe of Asher, from the tribe of Naphtali, and from the half-tribe of Manasseh in Bashan.
7 T he sons of Merari received twelve cities from the families of Reuben, Gad and Zebulun.
The children of Merari according to their families had twelve cities from the tribe of Reuben, from the tribe of Gad, and from the tribe of Zebulun.
8 T he sons of Israel by drawing names gave these cities with their fields to the Levites, as the Lord had said through Moses.
And the children of Israel gave these cities with their common-lands by lot to the Levites, as the Lord had commanded by the hand of Moses.
9 T hey gave from the families of Judah and Simeon the cities given here by name.
So they gave from the tribe of the children of Judah and from the tribe of the children of Simeon these cities which are designated by name,
10 T hey were for the sons of Aaron, one of the families of the Kohathites, of the sons of Levi. For their name was drawn first.
which were for the children of Aaron, one of the families of the Kohathites, who were of the children of Levi; for the lot was theirs first.
11 T hey gave them Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron) with the fields around it in the hill country of Judah. (Arba was the father of Anak.)
And they gave them Kirjath Arba ( Arba was the father of Anak), which is Hebron, in the mountains of Judah, with the common-land surrounding it.
12 B ut the city’s fields and towns had been given to Caleb the son of Jephunneh as his own.
But the fields of the city and its villages they gave to Caleb the son of Jephunneh as his possession.
13 S o to the sons of Aaron the religious leader they gave Hebron and Libnah with their fields. Hebron was the city where one who killed a man could go to be safe.
Thus to the children of Aaron the priest they gave Hebron with its common-land (a city of refuge for the slayer), Libnah with its common-land,
14 A nd they gave them Jattir with its fields, Eshtemoa with its fields,

15 H olon with its fields, Debir with its fields,
Holon with its common-land, Debir with its common-land,
16 A in with its fields, Juttah with its fields, and Bethshemesh with its fields. There were nine cities from these two family groups.
Ain with its common-land, Juttah with its common-land, and Beth Shemesh with its common-land: nine cities from those two tribes;
17 F rom the family of Benjamin were given Gibeon with its fields, Geba with its fields,
and from the tribe of Benjamin, Gibeon with its common-land, Geba with its common-land,
18 A nathoth with its fields, and Almon with its fields, four cities.
Anathoth with its common-land, and Almon with its common-land: four cities.
19 F or the sons of Aaron, the religious leaders, there were thirteen cities in all, with their fields.
All the cities of the children of Aaron, the priests, were thirteen cities with their common-lands.
20 T hen cities from the family of Ephraim were given to the rest of the families of the people of Kohath, the Levites.
And the families of the children of Kohath, the Levites, the rest of the children of Kohath, even they had the cities of their lot from the tribe of Ephraim.
21 T hey gave them Shechem with its fields in the hill country of Ephraim. A man who killed another person could run to Shechem to be safe. And they gave them Gezer with its fields,

22 K ibzaim with its fields, and Beth-horon with its fields, four cities.

23 F rom the family of Dan were given Eletke with its fields, Gibbethon with its fields,
and from the tribe of Dan, Eltekeh with its common-land, Gibbethon with its common-land,
24 A ijalon with its fields, and Gath-rimmon with its fields, four cities.
Aijalon with its common-land, and Gath Rimmon with its common-land: four cities;
25 F rom the half-family group of Manasseh were given Taanach with its fields, and Gathrimmon with its fields, two cities.
and from the half-tribe of Manasseh, Tanach with its common-land and Gath Rimmon with its common-land: two cities.
26 T here were ten cities in all, with their fields, for the rest of the families of the Kohathites.
All the ten cities with their common-lands were for the rest of the families of the children of Kohath.
27 F rom the half-family group of Manasseh they gave Golan in Bashan and Be-eshterah and their fields to the sons of Gershon, one of the Levite families. A man who killed another person could run to Golan in Bashan to be safe. They were given two cities.
Also to the children of Gershon, of the families of the Levites, from the other half-tribe of Manasseh, they gave Golan in Bashan with its common-land (a city of refuge for the slayer), and Be Eshterah with its common-land: two cities;
28 F rom the family of Issachar were given Kishion with its fields, Daberath with its fields,
and from the tribe of Issachar, Kishion with its common-land, Daberath with its common-land,
29 J armuth with its fields, and Engannim with its fields, four cities.
Jarmuth with its common-land, and En Gannim with its common-land: four cities;
30 F rom the family of Asher were given Mishal with its fields, Abdon with its fields,
and from the tribe of Asher, Mishal with its common-land, Abdon with its common-land,
31 H elkath with its fields, and Rehob with its fields, four cities.
Helkath with its common-land, and Rehob with its common-land: four cities;
32 F rom the family of Naphtali were given Kedesh in Galilee with its fields, Hammoth-dor with its fields, and Kartan with its fields, three cities. A man who killed another man could run to Kedesh to be safe.
and from the tribe of Naphtali, Kedesh in Galilee with its common-land (a city of refuge for the slayer), Hammoth Dor with its common-land, and Kartan with its common-land: three cities.
33 T he cities for the families of the Gershonites were thirteen in all, with their fields.
All the cities of the Gershonites according to their families were thirteen cities with their common-lands.
34 T hey gave cities to the families of the sons of Merari, the rest of the Levites, from the family of Zebulun. They gave them Jokneam with its fields, Kartah with its fields,
And to the families of the children of Merari, the rest of the Levites, from the tribe of Zebulun, Jokneam with its common-land, Kartah with its common-land,
35 D imnah with its fields, and Nahalal with its fields, four cities.
Dimnah with its common-land, and Nahalal with its common-land: four cities;
36 F rom the family of Reuben were given Bezer with its fields, Jahaz with its fields,
and from the tribe of Reuben, Bezer with its common-land, Jahaz with its common-land,
37 K edemoth with its fields, and Mephaath with its fields, four cities.
Kedemoth with its common-land, and Mephaath with its common-land: four cities;
38 F rom the family of Gad was given Ramoth in Gilead with its fields. A man who killed another person could run to Ramoth in Gilead to be safe. And they gave them Mahanaim with its fields,
and from the tribe of Gad, Ramoth in Gilead with its common-land (a city of refuge for the slayer), Mahanaim with its common-land,
39 H eshbon with its fields, and Jazer with its fields, four cities in all.
Heshbon with its common-land, and Jazer with its common-land: four cities in all.
40 T here were twelve cities in all given to the families of the people of Merari, the rest of the families of the Levites.
So all the cities for the children of Merari according to their families, the rest of the families of the Levites, were by their lot twelve cities.
41 T he cities of the Levites among the land of the people of Israel were forty-eight cities in all, with their fields.
All the cities of the Levites within the possession of the children of Israel were forty-eight cities with their common-lands.
42 E ach one of these cities had its fields around it. So it was with all these cities.
Every one of these cities had its common-land surrounding it; thus were all these cities. The Promise Fulfilled
43 T he Lord gave Israel all the land He had promised to give to their fathers. They took it for their own, and lived in it.
So the Lord gave to Israel all the land of which He had sworn to give to their fathers, and they took possession of it and dwelt in it.
44 T he Lord gave them peace on every side, just as He had promised their fathers. Not one of all those who hated them could stand in front of them. The Lord gave all those who hated them into their hand.
The Lord gave them rest all around, according to all that He had sworn to their fathers. And not a man of all their enemies stood against them; the Lord delivered all their enemies into their hand.
45 E very good promise which the Lord had made to the people of Israel came true.
Not a word failed of any good thing which the Lord had spoken to the house of Israel. All came to pass.
