1 E arly in the morning on the first day of the week, the women went to the grave taking the spices they had made ready.

Now on the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they, and certain other women with them, came to the tomb bringing the spices which they had prepared.

2 T hey found the stone had been pushed away from the grave.

But they found the stone rolled away from the tomb.

3 T hey went in but they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.

Then they went in and did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.

4 W hile they wondered about what had happened, they saw two men standing by them in shining clothes.

And it happened, as they were greatly perplexed about this, that behold, two men stood by them in shining garments.

5 T hey were very much afraid and got down with their faces to the ground. The men said to them, “Why do you look for the living One among those who are dead?

Then, as they were afraid and bowed their faces to the earth, they said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead?

6 H e is not here. He is risen. Do you not remember what He said to you when He was yet in Galilee?

He is not here, but is risen! Remember how He spoke to you when He was still in Galilee,

7 H e said, ‘The Son of Man must be given over into the hands of sinful men. He must be nailed to a cross. He will rise again three days later.’”

saying, ‘The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.’ ”

8 T hey remembered what He had said.

And they remembered His words.

9 W hen they came back from the grave, they told all these things to the eleven followers and to all the others.

Then they returned from the tomb and told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest.

10 T hey were Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary the mother of James. Other women who were with them told these things to the followers also.

It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them, who told these things to the apostles.

11 T heir words sounded like foolish talk. The followers did not believe them.

And their words seemed to them like idle tales, and they did not believe them.

12 B ut Peter got up and ran to the grave. He got down to look in and saw only the linen clothes. Then he went away, surprised about what had happened. The Followers of Jesus Do Not Believe He Is Risen

But Peter arose and ran to the tomb; and stooping down, he saw the linen cloths lying by themselves; and he departed, marveling to himself at what had happened. The Road to Emmaus

13 T hat same day two of His followers were going to the town of Emmaus. It was about a two-hour walk from Jerusalem.

Now behold, two of them were traveling that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was seven miles from Jerusalem.

14 T hey talked of all these things that had happened.

And they talked together of all these things which had happened.

15 W hile they were talking together, Jesus Himself came and walked along with them.

So it was, while they conversed and reasoned, that Jesus Himself drew near and went with them.

16 S omething kept their eyes from seeing Who He was.

But their eyes were restrained, so that they did not know Him.

17 H e said to them, “What are you talking about as you walk?” They stood still and looked sad.

And He said to them, “What kind of conversation is this that you have with one another as you walk and are sad?”

18 O ne of them, whose name was Cleopas, said to Him, “Are you the only one visiting Jerusalem who has not heard of the things that have happened here these days?”

Then the one whose name was Cleopas answered and said to Him, “Are You the only stranger in Jerusalem, and have You not known the things which happened there in these days?”

19 J esus said to them, “What things?” They answered, “The things about Jesus of Nazareth. He was the great One Who spoke for God. He did powerful works and spoke powerful words in the sight of God and the people.

And He said to them, “What things?” So they said to Him, “The things concerning Jesus of Nazareth, who was a Prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people,

21 W e were hoping He was the One Who was going to make the Jewish people free. But it was three days ago when these things happened.

But we were hoping that it was He who was going to redeem Israel. Indeed, besides all this, today is the third day since these things happened.

22 Some of the women of our group have surprised us and made us wonder. They went to the grave early this morning.

Yes, and certain women of our company, who arrived at the tomb early, astonished us.

23 T hey did not find His body. They came back saying they had seen angels in a special dream who said that He was alive.

When they did not find His body, they came saying that they had also seen a vision of angels who said He was alive.

24 S ome of those who were with us went to the grave and found it as the women had said. But they did not see Him.”

And certain of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said; but Him they did not see.”

25 T hen Jesus said to them, “You foolish men. How slow you are to believe what the early preachers have said.

Then He said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken!

26 D id not Christ have to go through these hard things to come into His shining-greatness?”

Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His glory?”

27 J esus kept on telling them what Moses and all the early preachers had said about Him in the Holy Writings.

And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself. The Disciples’ Eyes Opened

28 W hen they came to the town where they were going, Jesus acted as if He were going farther.

Then they drew near to the village where they were going, and He indicated that He would have gone farther.

29 B ut they said to Him, “Stay with us. It will soon be evening. The day is about over.” He went in to stay with them.

But they constrained Him, saying, “Abide with us, for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent.” And He went in to stay with them.

30 A s He sat at the table with them, He took the bread and gave thanks and broke it. Then He gave it to them.

Now it came to pass, as He sat at the table with them, that He took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them.

31 A nd their eyes were opened and they knew Him. Then He left them and could not be seen.

Then their eyes were opened and they knew Him; and He vanished from their sight.

32 T hey said to each other, “Were not our hearts filled with joy when He talked to us on the road about what the Holy Writings said?”

And they said to one another, “Did not our heart burn within us while He talked with us on the road, and while He opened the Scriptures to us?”

33 T hen they got up at once and went back to Jerusalem. They found the eleven followers together and others with them.

So they rose up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven and those who were with them gathered together,

34 T hey said, “For sure the Lord is risen and was seen by Simon.”

saying, “The Lord is risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!”

36 A s they talked, Jesus Himself stood among them. He said, “May you have peace.”

Now as they said these things, Jesus Himself stood in the midst of them, and said to them, “Peace to you.”

37 B ut they were afraid and full of fear. They thought they saw a spirit.

But they were terrified and frightened, and supposed they had seen a spirit.

38 J esus said to them, “Why are you afraid? Why do you have doubts in your hearts?

And He said to them, “Why are you troubled? And why do doubts arise in your hearts?

39 L ook at My hands and My feet. See! It is I, Myself! Touch Me and see for yourself. A spirit does not have flesh and bones as I have.”

Behold My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself. Handle Me and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see I have.”

40 W hen Jesus had said this, He showed them His hands and feet.

When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His feet.

41 T hey still wondered. It was hard for them to believe it and yet it made them happy. Then He said to them, “Do you have anything here to eat?”

But while they still did not believe for joy, and marveled, He said to them, “Have you any food here?”

42 T hey gave Jesus a piece of fish that had been cooked and some honey.

So they gave Him a piece of a broiled fish and some honeycomb.

44 J esus said to them, “These are the things I told you while I was yet with you. All things written about Me in the Law of Moses and in the Books of the early preachers and in the Psalms must happen as they said they would happen.”

Then He said to them, “These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me.”

45 T hen He opened their minds to understand the Holy Writings.

And He opened their understanding, that they might comprehend the Scriptures.

46 H e said to them, “It is written that Christ should suffer and be raised from the dead after three days.

Then He said to them, “Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day,
