1 T he two angels came to Sodom in the evening. Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom. When Lot saw them, he got up to meet them. He put his face to the ground

Now the two angels came to Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom. When Lot saw them, he rose to meet them, and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground.

2 a nd said, “My lords, come into the house of your servant. Stay the night, and wash your feet. Then you may rise early and go on your way.” But they said, “No, we will stay the night in the street.”

And he said, “Here now, my lords, please turn in to your servant’s house and spend the night, and wash your feet; then you may rise early and go on your way.” And they said, “No, but we will spend the night in the open square.”

3 B ut he begged them, so they turned aside with him and went into his house. And he made a supper for them. He made bread without yeast, and they ate.

But he insisted strongly; so they turned in to him and entered his house. Then he made them a feast, and baked unleavened bread, and they ate.

4 B efore they went to bed, all the men of the city of Sodom both young and old gathered around the house.

Now before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, both old and young, all the people from every quarter, surrounded the house.

5 T hey called to Lot, saying, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so we may lie with them.”

And they called to Lot and said to him, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us that we may know them carnally. ”

6 L ot went out the door to the men, and shut the door behind him.

So Lot went out to them through the doorway, shut the door behind him,

7 H e said, “My brothers, please do not be so sinful.

and said, “Please, my brethren, do not do so wickedly!

8 S ee, I have two daughters who have never had a man. Let me bring them out to you. And do to them whatever you want. But do nothing to these men, for they have come to be safe under my roof.”

See now, I have two daughters who have not known a man; please, let me bring them out to you, and you may do to them as you wish; only do nothing to these men, since this is the reason they have come under the shadow of my roof.”

9 B ut they said, “Get out of our way. This man came to live here from another land. And already he acts like a judge. Now we will do worse things to you than to them.” So they pushed hard against Lot and almost broke down the door.

And they said, “Stand back!” Then they said, “This one came in to stay here, and he keeps acting as a judge; now we will deal worse with you than with them.” So they pressed hard against the man Lot, and came near to break down the door.

10 B ut the two men put out their hands and brought Lot into the house with them, and shut the door.

But the men reached out their hands and pulled Lot into the house with them, and shut the door.

11 T hen they blinded the men who were at the door of the house, both small and big. So the men became tired trying to find the door. Lot Leaves Sodom

And they struck the men who were at the doorway of the house with blindness, both small and great, so that they became weary trying to find the door. Sodom and Gomorrah Destroyed

12 T hen the two men asked Lot, “Do you have any others here? Sons-in-law, your sons, your daughters, anyone you have in the city, bring them out of this place.

Then the men said to Lot, “Have you anyone else here? Son-in-law, your sons, your daughters, and whomever you have in the city—take them out of this place!

13 F or we are about to destroy this place. Because the cry against its people has become so loud to the Lord that the Lord has sent us to destroy it.”

For we will destroy this place, because the outcry against them has grown great before the face of the Lord, and the Lord has sent us to destroy it.”

14 S o Lot went out to speak to his sons-in-law who were to marry his daughters. He said, “Get up! Get out of this place! For the Lord will destroy the city!” But his sons-in-law thought he was only joking.

So Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, who had married his daughters, and said, “Get up, get out of this place; for the Lord will destroy this city!” But to his sons-in-law he seemed to be joking.

15 W hen morning came, the angels told Lot to hurry. They said, “Get up. Take your wife and your two daughters who are here. Or else you will be destroyed when the city is punished.”

When the morning dawned, the angels urged Lot to hurry, saying, “Arise, take your wife and your two daughters who are here, lest you be consumed in the punishment of the city.”

16 B ut Lot was slow to move. So the men took him, his wife and two daughters by the hand and brought them out of the city. For the Lord had loving-pity for him.

And while he lingered, the men took hold of his hand, his wife’s hand, and the hands of his two daughters, the Lord being merciful to him, and they brought him out and set him outside the city.

17 W hen they had brought them out of the city, one of them said, “Run for your life! Do not look behind you. Do not stop until you are out of the valley. Run to the mountains or else you will be destroyed.”

So it came to pass, when they had brought them outside, that he said, “Escape for your life! Do not look behind you nor stay anywhere in the plain. Escape to the mountains, lest you be destroyed.”

18 B ut Lot said to them, “O, no, my lords!

Then Lot said to them, “Please, no, my lords!

19 S ee, your servant has found favor in your eyes. You have shown me great kindness in what you have done for me by saving my life. But I cannot run to the mountains. For I will run into danger and die.

Indeed now, your servant has found favor in your sight, and you have increased your mercy which you have shown me by saving my life; but I cannot escape to the mountains, lest some evil overtake me and I die.

20 S ee, this town is near enough to run to, and it is small. Let me run there (is it not small?) and my life will be saved.”

See now, this city is near enough to flee to, and it is a little one; please let me escape there ( is it not a little one?) and my soul shall live.”

21 T he angel said to him, “See, I am doing what you ask. I will not destroy this town that you have spoken about.

And he said to him, “See, I have favored you concerning this thing also, in that I will not overthrow this city for which you have spoken.

22 H urry and run there. For I cannot do anything until you get there.” So the name given to the town was Zoar.

Hurry, escape there. For I cannot do anything until you arrive there.” Therefore the name of the city was called Zoar.

23 T he sun had moved over the earth when Lot came to Zoar.

The sun had risen upon the earth when Lot entered Zoar.

24 T hen the Lord poured fire from the heavens upon Sodom and Gomorrah.

Then the Lord rained brimstone and fire on Sodom and Gomorrah, from the Lord out of the heavens.

25 H e destroyed those cities, and all the valley, and all the people of the cities, and what grew on the ground.

So He overthrew those cities, all the plain, all the inhabitants of the cities, and what grew on the ground.

26 B ut Lot’s wife behind him turned and looked toward the cities. And she was changed into salt.

But his wife looked back behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.

27 A braham went early in the morning to the place where he had stood before the Lord.

And Abraham went early in the morning to the place where he had stood before the Lord.

28 H e looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah and toward all the land of the valley. And he saw the smoke of the land going up like the smoke from a place where there is much fire.

Then he looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain; and he saw, and behold, the smoke of the land which went up like the smoke of a furnace.

29 B ut when God destroyed the cities of the valley, He remembered Abraham. He sent Lot out of the center of the danger, when He destroyed the cities where Lot lived.

And it came to pass, when God destroyed the cities of the plain, that God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when He overthrew the cities in which Lot had dwelt. The Descendants of Lot

30 T hen Lot went up from Zoar with his two daughters, and lived in the mountains for he was afraid to stay in Zoar. He lived in a cave in the side of a mountain with his two daughters.

Then Lot went up out of Zoar and dwelt in the mountains, and his two daughters were with him; for he was afraid to dwell in Zoar. And he and his two daughters dwelt in a cave.

31 T hen the first-born daughter said to the younger one, “Our father is old. And there is not a man on earth to marry us.

Now the firstborn said to the younger, “Our father is old, and there is no man on the earth to come in to us as is the custom of all the earth.

32 C ome, let us make our father drink wine. Let us lie with him, so we may keep our family through our father.”

Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve the lineage of our father.”

33 S o they made their father drink wine that night. And the first-born went in and lay with her father. He did not know when she lay down or when she got up.

So they made their father drink wine that night. And the firstborn went in and lay with her father, and he did not know when she lay down or when she arose.

34 O n the next day, the first-born said to the younger, “See, I lay with my father last night. Let us make him drink wine tonight also, then you go in and lie with him. And we may keep our family through our father.”

It happened on the next day that the firstborn said to the younger, “Indeed I lay with my father last night; let us make him drink wine tonight also, and you go in and lie with him, that we may preserve the lineage of our father.”

35 S o they made their father drink wine that night also, then the younger daughter went and lay with him. He did not know when she lay down or when she got up.

Then they made their father drink wine that night also. And the younger arose and lay with him, and he did not know when she lay down or when she arose.

36 S o both the daughters of Lot were going to have a child by their father.

Thus both the daughters of Lot were with child by their father.

37 T he first-born daughter gave birth to a son, and gave him the name Moab. He is the father of the Moabites to this day.

The firstborn bore a son and called his name Moab; he is the father of the Moabites to this day.

38 T he younger daughter gave birth to a son also. She gave him the name Benammi. He is the father of the Ammonites to this day.

And the younger, she also bore a son and called his name Ben-Ammi; he is the father of the people of Ammon to this day.
