1 I , therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called,

¶ I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation with which ye are called,

2 w ith all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love,

¶ with all humility and meekness, with tolerance, forbearing one another in love,

3 e ndeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

being diligent to guard the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

4 T here is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling;

There is one body and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling,

5 o ne Lord, one faith, one baptism;

one Lord, one faith, one baptism,

6 o ne God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all. Spiritual Gifts

one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all, and in you all.

7 B ut to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ’s gift.

But unto each one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of the Christ.

8 T herefore He says: “When He ascended on high, He led captivity captive, And gave gifts to men.”

Therefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive and gave gifts unto men.

9 ( Now this, “He ascended” —what does it mean but that He also first descended into the lower parts of the earth?

(Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth?

10 H e who descended is also the One who ascended far above all the heavens, that He might fill all things.)

He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all the heavens, that he might fulfill all things.)

11 A nd He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers,

And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers,

12 f or the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ,

for the perfecting of the saints in the work of the ministry, unto the edifying of the body of the Christ

13 t ill we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ;

until we all come forth in the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the coming of age of the Christ:

14 t hat we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting,

That we no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men and cunning craftiness, by which they lie in wait to deceive,

15 b ut, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head—Christ—

but following the truth in charity, let us grow up into him in all things, who is the head, the Christ:

16 f rom whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love. The New Man

From whom the whole body fitly joined together and well tied together among itself by the nourishment that every connecting bond supplies, by the operation of each member according to measure they have received, making increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in charity.

17 T his I say, therefore, and testify in the Lord, that you should no longer walk as the rest of the Gentiles walk, in the futility of their mind,

¶ This I say, therefore, and require in the Lord that from now on ye not walk as the other Gentiles walk in the vanity of their own senses,

18 h aving their understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart;

having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them because of the blindness of their heart,

19 w ho, being past feeling, have given themselves over to lewdness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.

who, after losing all sense of feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness to work all uncleanness with greediness.

20 B ut you have not so learned Christ,

But ye have not so learned of the Christ,

21 i f indeed you have heard Him and have been taught by Him, as the truth is in Jesus:

if so be that ye have heard him and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus,

22 t hat you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts,

that ye put off everything concerning the old way of life, that is, the old man who corrupts himself according to deceitful desires,

23 a nd be renewed in the spirit of your mind,

and be renewed in the spirit of your understanding

24 a nd that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness. Do Not Grieve the Spirit

and that ye put on the new man, which is created in conformity to God in righteousness and in the holiness of the truth.

25 T herefore, putting away lying, “ Let each one of you speak truth with his neighbor,” for we are members of one another.

Therefore, leaving the lie, speak every man truth with his neighbour, for we are members one of another.

26 Be angry, and do not sin”: do not let the sun go down on your wrath,

Be ye angry and sin not; let not the sun go down upon your wrath,

27 n or give place to the devil.

neither give place to the devil.

28 L et him who stole steal no longer, but rather let him labor, working with his hands what is good, that he may have something to give him who has need.

Let him that stole steal no more, but rather let him labour, working with his hands that which is good, that he may have to give to him that is in need.

29 L et no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.

Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good for edification, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.

30 A nd do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God with which ye are sealed for the day of redemption.

31 L et all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice.

Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamour and evil speaking be taken away from you, with all malice,

32 A nd be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.

and be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another even as God has forgiven you in Christ.
