1 I am the man who has seen affliction by the rod of His wrath.

I am the man that hath seen affliction by the rod of his wrath.

2 H e has led me and made me walk In darkness and not in light.

He hath led me and caused me to walk in darkness, and not in light.

3 S urely He has turned His hand against me Time and time again throughout the day.

Surely against me he turneth his hand again and again all the day.

4 H e has aged my flesh and my skin, And broken my bones.

My flesh and my skin hath he made old; he hath broken my bones.

5 H e has besieged me And surrounded me with bitterness and woe.

He hath builded against me, and compassed me with gall and travail.

6 H e has set me in dark places Like the dead of long ago.

He hath made me to dwell in dark places, as those that have been long dead.

7 H e has hedged me in so that I cannot get out; He has made my chain heavy.

He hath walled me about, that I cannot go forth; he hath made my chain heavy.

8 E ven when I cry and shout, He shuts out my prayer.

Yea, when I cry, and call for help, he shutteth out my prayer.

9 H e has blocked my ways with hewn stone; He has made my paths crooked.

He hath walled up my ways with hewn stone; he hath made my paths crooked.

10 H e has been to me a bear lying in wait, Like a lion in ambush.

He is unto me as a bear lying in wait, as a lion in secret places.

11 H e has turned aside my ways and torn me in pieces; He has made me desolate.

He hath turned aside my ways, and pulled me in pieces; he hath made me desolate.

12 H e has bent His bow And set me up as a target for the arrow.

He hath bent his bow, and set me as a mark for the arrow.

13 H e has caused the arrows of His quiver To pierce my loins.

He hath caused the shafts of his quiver to enter into my reins.

14 I have become the ridicule of all my people— Their taunting song all the day.

I am become a derision to all my people, and their song all the day.

15 H e has filled me with bitterness, He has made me drink wormwood.

He hath filled me with bitterness, he hath sated me with wormwood.

16 H e has also broken my teeth with gravel, And covered me with ashes.

He hath also broken my teeth with gravel stones; he hath covered me with ashes.

17 Y ou have moved my soul far from peace; I have forgotten prosperity.

And thou hast removed my soul far off from peace; I forgat prosperity.

18 A nd I said, “My strength and my hope Have perished from the Lord.”

And I said, My strength is perished, and mine expectation from Jehovah.

Remember mine affliction and my misery, the wormwood and the gall.

20 M y soul still remembers And sinks within me.

My soul hath them still in remembrance, and is bowed down within me.

21 T his I recall to my mind, Therefore I have hope.

This I recall to my mind; therefore have I hope.

22 T hrough the Lord ’s mercies we are not consumed, Because His compassions fail not.

It is of Jehovah's lovingkindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.

30 L et him give his cheek to the one who strikes him, And be full of reproach.

Let him give his cheek to him that smiteth him; let him be filled full with reproach.

31 F or the Lord will not cast off forever.

For the Lord will not cast off for ever.

32 T hough He causes grief, Yet He will show compassion According to the multitude of His mercies.

For though he cause grief, yet will he have compassion according to the multitude of his lovingkindnesses.

33 F or He does not afflict willingly, Nor grieve the children of men.

For he doth not afflict willingly, nor grieve the children of men.

34 T o crush under one’s feet All the prisoners of the earth,

To crush under foot all the prisoners of the earth,

35 T o turn aside the justice due a man Before the face of the Most High,

To turn aside the right of a man before the face of the Most High,

36 O r subvert a man in his cause— The Lord does not approve.

To subvert a man in his cause, the Lord approveth not.

37 W ho is he who speaks and it comes to pass, When the Lord has not commanded it?

Who is he that saith, and it cometh to pass, when the Lord commandeth it not?

38 I s it not from the mouth of the Most High That woe and well-being proceed?

Out of the mouth of the Most High cometh there not evil and good?

39 W hy should a living man complain, A man for the punishment of his sins?

Wherefore doth a living man complain, a man for the punishment of his sins?

They have cut off my life in the dungeon, and have cast a stone upon me.

54 T he waters flowed over my head; I said, “I am cut off!”

Waters flowed over my head; I said, I am cut off.

55 I called on Your name, O Lord, From the lowest pit.

I called upon thy name, O Jehovah, out of the lowest dungeon.

56 Y ou have heard my voice: “Do not hide Your ear From my sighing, from my cry for help.”

Thou heardest my voice; hide not thine ear at my breathing, at my cry.

57 Y ou drew near on the day I called on You, And said, “Do not fear!”

Thou drewest near in the day that I called upon thee; thou saidst, Fear not.

58 O Lord, You have pleaded the case for my soul; You have redeemed my life.

O Lord, thou hast pleaded the causes of my soul; thou hast redeemed my life.

59 O Lord, You have seen how I am wronged; Judge my case.

O Jehovah, thou hast seen my wrong; judge thou my cause.

60 Y ou have seen all their vengeance, All their schemes against me.

Thou hast seen all their vengeance and all their devices against me.

65 G ive them a veiled heart; Your curse be upon them!

Thou wilt give them hardness of heart, thy curse unto them.

66 I n Your anger, Pursue and destroy them From under the heavens of the Lord.

Thou wilt pursue them in anger, and destroy them from under the heavens of Jehovah.
