1 P saume d'Asaph. Oui, Dieu est bon pour Israël, Pour ceux qui ont le coeur pur.

Truly God is good to Israel, even to such as are of a clean heart.

2 T outefois, mon pied allait fléchir, Mes pas étaient sur le point de glisser;

But as for me, my feet were almost gone; my steps had well nigh slipped.

3 C ar je portais envie aux insensés, En voyant le bonheur des méchants.

For I was envious at the foolish, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.

4 R ien ne les tourmente jusqu'à leur mort, Et leur corps est chargé d'embonpoint;

For there are no bands in their death: but their strength is firm.

5 I ls n'ont aucune part aux souffrances humaines, Ils ne sont point frappés comme le reste des hommes.

They are not in trouble as other men; neither are they plagued like other men.

6 A ussi l'orgueil leur sert de collier, La violence est le vêtement qui les enveloppe;

Therefore pride compasseth them about as a chain; violence covereth them as a garment.

7 L 'iniquité sort de leurs entrailles, Les pensées de leur coeur se font jour.

Their eyes stand out with fatness: they have more than heart could wish.

8 I ls raillent, et parlent méchamment d'opprimer; Ils profèrent des discours hautains,

They are corrupt, and speak wickedly concerning oppression: they speak loftily.

9 I ls élèvent leur bouche jusqu'aux cieux, Et leur langue se promène sur la terre.

They set their mouth against the heavens, and their tongue walketh through the earth.

10 V oilà pourquoi son peuple se tourne de leur côté, Il avale l'eau abondamment,

Therefore his people return hither: and waters of a full cup are wrung out to them.

11 E t il dit: Comment Dieu saurait-il, Comment le Très haut connaîtrait-il?

And they say, How doth God know? and is there knowledge in the most High?

12 A insi sont les méchants: Toujours heureux, ils accroissent leurs richesses.

Behold, these are the ungodly, who prosper in the world; they increase in riches.

13 C 'est donc en vain que j'ai purifié mon coeur, Et que j'ai lavé mes mains dans l'innocence:

Verily I have cleansed my heart in vain, and washed my hands in innocency.

14 C haque jour je suis frappé, Tous les matins mon châtiment est là.

For all the day long have I been plagued, and chastened every morning.

15 S i je disais: Je veux parler comme eux, Voici, je trahirais la race de tes enfants.

If I say, I will speak thus; behold, I should offend against the generation of thy children.

16 Q uand j'ai réfléchi là-dessus pour m'éclairer, La difficulté fut grande à mes yeux,

When I thought to know this, it was too painful for me;

17 J usqu'à ce que j'eusse pénétré dans les sanctuaires de Dieu, Et que j'eusse pris garde au sort final des méchants.

Until I went into the sanctuary of God; then understood I their end.

18 O ui, tu les places sur des voies glissantes, Tu les fais tomber et les mets en ruines.

Surely thou didst set them in slippery places: thou castedst them down into destruction.

19 E h quoi! en un instant les voilà détruits! Ils sont enlevés, anéantis par une fin soudaine!

How are they brought into desolation, as in a moment! they are utterly consumed with terrors.

20 C omme un songe au réveil, Seigneur, à ton réveil, tu repousses leur image.

As a dream when one awaketh; so, O Lord, when thou awakest, thou shalt despise their image.

21 L orsque mon coeur s'aigrissait, Et que je me sentais percé dans les entrailles,

Thus my heart was grieved, and I was pricked in my reins.

22 J 'étais stupide et sans intelligence, J'étais à ton égard comme les bêtes.

So foolish was I, and ignorant: I was as a beast before thee.

23 C ependant je suis toujours avec toi, Tu m'as saisi la main droite;

Nevertheless I am continually with thee: thou hast holden me by my right hand.

24 T u me conduiras par ton conseil, Puis tu me recevras dans la gloire.

Thou shalt guide me with thy counsel, and afterward receive me to glory.

25 Q uel autre ai-je au ciel que toi! Et sur la terre je ne prends plaisir qu'en toi.

Whom have I in heaven but thee? and there is none upon earth that I desire beside thee.

26 M a chair et mon coeur peuvent se consumer: Dieu sera toujours le rocher de mon coeur et mon partage.

My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever.

27 C ar voici, ceux qui s'éloignent de toi périssent; Tu anéantis tous ceux qui te sont infidèles.

For, lo, they that are far from thee shall perish: thou hast destroyed all them that go a whoring from thee.

28 P our moi, m'approcher de Dieu, c'est mon bien: Je place mon refuge dans le Seigneur, l'Éternel, Afin de raconter toutes tes oeuvres.

But it is good for me to draw near to God: I have put my trust in the Lord God, that I may declare all thy works.
