1 A nd as they were speaking to the people, the priests and captain of the temple and the Sadducees came upon them,

Now as they spoke to the people, the priests, the captain of the temple, and the Sadducees came upon them,

2 b eing distressed on account of their teaching the people and preaching by Jesus the resurrection from among dead;

being greatly disturbed that they taught the people and preached in Jesus the resurrection from the dead.

3 a nd they laid hands on them, and put them in ward till the morrow; for it was already evening.

And they laid hands on them, and put them in custody until the next day, for it was already evening.

4 B ut many of those who had heard the word believed; and the number of the men had become five thousand.

However, many of those who heard the word believed; and the number of the men came to be about five thousand. Addressing the Sanhedrin

5 A nd it came to pass on the morrow that their rulers and elders and scribes were gathered together at Jerusalem,

And it came to pass, on the next day, that their rulers, elders, and scribes,

6 a nd Annas the high priest, and Caiaphas, and John, and Alexander, and as many as were of high priestly family;

as well as Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, John, and Alexander, and as many as were of the family of the high priest, were gathered together at Jerusalem.

7 a nd having placed them in the midst they inquired, In what power or in what name have ye done this?

And when they had set them in the midst, they asked, “By what power or by what name have you done this?”

8 T hen Peter, filled with Holy Spirit, said to them, Rulers of the people and elders,

Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers of the people and elders of Israel:

9 i f we this day are called upon to answer as to the good deed to the infirm man, how he has been healed,

If we this day are judged for a good deed done to a helpless man, by what means he has been made well,

10 b e it known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that in the name of Jesus Christ the Nazaraean, whom ye have crucified, whom God has raised from among dead, by him this stands here before you sound.

let it be known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, by Him this man stands here before you whole.

11 H e is the stone which has been set at nought by you the builders, which is become the corner stone.

This is the ‘stone which was rejected by you builders, which has become the chief cornerstone.’

12 A nd salvation is in none other, for neither is there another name under heaven which is given among men by which we must be saved.

Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” The Name of Jesus Forbidden

13 B ut seeing the boldness of Peter and John, and perceiving that they were unlettered and uninstructed men, they wondered; and they recognised them that they were with Jesus.

Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated and untrained men, they marveled. And they realized that they had been with Jesus.

14 A nd beholding the man who had been healed standing with them, they had nothing to reply;

And seeing the man who had been healed standing with them, they could say nothing against it.

15 b ut having commanded them to go out of the council they conferred with one another,

But when they had commanded them to go aside out of the council, they conferred among themselves,

16 s aying, What shall we do to these men? for that indeed an evident sign has come to pass through their means is manifest to all that inhabit Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it.

saying, “What shall we do to these men? For, indeed, that a notable miracle has been done through them is evident to all who dwell in Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it.

17 B ut that it be not further spread among the people, let us threaten them severely no longer to speak to any man in this name.

But so that it spreads no further among the people, let us severely threaten them, that from now on they speak to no man in this name.”

18 A nd having called them, they charged not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus.

So they called them and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus.

19 B ut Peter and John answering said to them, If it be righteous before God to listen to you rather than to God, judge ye;

But Peter and John answered and said to them, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you more than to God, you judge.

20 f or as for us we cannot refrain from speaking of the things which we have seen and heard.

For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.”

21 B ut they, having further threatened them, let them go, finding no way how they might punish them, on account of the people, because all glorified God for what had taken place;

So when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding no way of punishing them, because of the people, since they all glorified God for what had been done.

22 f or the man on whom this sign of healing had taken place was above forty years old.

For the man was over forty years old on whom this miracle of healing had been performed. Prayer for Boldness

23 A nd having been let go, they came to their own, and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said to them.

And being let go, they went to their own companions and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said to them.

24 A nd they, having heard, lifted up voice with one accord to God, and said, Lord, thou art the God who made the heaven and the earth and the sea, and all that is in them;

So when they heard that, they raised their voice to God with one accord and said: “Lord, You are God, who made heaven and earth and the sea, and all that is in them,

25 w ho hast said by the mouth of thy servant David, Why have nations raged haughtily and peoples meditated vain things?

who by the mouth of Your servant David have said: ‘Why did the nations rage, And the people plot vain things?

26 T he kings of the earth were there, and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord and against his Christ.

The kings of the earth took their stand, And the rulers were gathered together Against the L ord and against His Christ.’

27 F or in truth against thy holy servant Jesus, whom thou hadst anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with nations, and peoples of Israel, have been gathered together in this city

“For truly against Your holy Servant Jesus, whom You anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the people of Israel, were gathered together

28 t o do whatever thy hand and thy counsel had determined before should come to pass.

to do whatever Your hand and Your purpose determined before to be done.

29 A nd now, Lord, look upon their threatenings, and give to thy bondmen with all boldness to speak thy word,

Now, Lord, look on their threats, and grant to Your servants that with all boldness they may speak Your word,

30 i n that thou stretchest out thy hand to heal, and that signs and wonders take place through the name of thy holy servant Jesus.

by stretching out Your hand to heal, and that signs and wonders may be done through the name of Your holy Servant Jesus.”

31 A nd when they had prayed, the place in which they were assembled shook, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and spoke the word of God with boldness.

And when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness. Sharing in All Things

32 A nd the heart and soul of the multitude of those that had believed were one, and not one said that anything of what he possessed was his own, but all things were common to them;

Now the multitude of those who believed were of one heart and one soul; neither did anyone say that any of the things he possessed was his own, but they had all things in common.

33 a nd with great power did the apostles give witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all.

And with great power the apostles gave witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And great grace was upon them all.

34 F or neither was there any one in want among them; for as many as were owners of lands or houses, selling them, brought the price of what was sold

Nor was there anyone among them who lacked; for all who were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the proceeds of the things that were sold,

35 a nd laid it at the feet of the apostles; and distribution was made to each according as any one might have need.

and laid them at the apostles’ feet; and they distributed to each as anyone had need.

36 A nd Joseph, who had been surnamed Barnabas by the apostles (which is, being interpreted, Son of consolation), a Levite, Cyprian by birth,

And Joses, who was also named Barnabas by the apostles (which is translated Son of Encouragement), a Levite of the country of Cyprus,

37 b eing possessed of land, having sold, brought the money and laid it at the feet of the apostles.

having land, sold it, and brought the money and laid it at the apostles’ feet.
