1 A nd Abram went up out of Egypt, he, and his wife, and all that he had, and Lot with him, towards the south.
Then Abram went up from Egypt, he and his wife and all that he had, and Lot with him, to the South.
2 A nd Abram was very rich in cattle, in silver, and in gold.

3 A nd he went on his journeys from the south as far as Bethel; as far as the place where his tent had been at the beginning, between Bethel and Ai;

4 t o the place of the altar that he had made there at the first. And there Abram called on the name of Jehovah.

5 A nd Lot also who went with Abram had flocks, and herds, and tents.

6 A nd the land could not support them, that they might dwell together, for their property was great; and they could not dwell together.
Now the land was not able to support them, that they might dwell together, for their possessions were so great that they could not dwell together.
7 A nd there was strife between the herdsmen of Abram's cattle and the herdsmen of Lot's cattle. And the Canaanite and the Perizzite were dwelling then in the land.
And there was strife between the herdsmen of Abram’s livestock and the herdsmen of Lot’s livestock. The Canaanites and the Perizzites then dwelt in the land.
8 A nd Abram said to Lot, I pray thee let there be no contention between me and thee, and between my herdsmen and thy herdsmen, for we are brethren.
So Abram said to Lot, “Please let there be no strife between you and me, and between my herdsmen and your herdsmen; for we are brethren.
9 I s not the whole land before thee? Separate thyself, I pray thee, from me: if to the left, then I will take the right; and if to the right, then I will take the left.
Is not the whole land before you? Please separate from me. If you take the left, then I will go to the right; or, if you go to the right, then I will go to the left.”
10 A nd Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of the Jordan that it was thoroughly watered, before Jehovah had destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah; as the garden of Jehovah, like the land of Egypt, as one goes to Zoar.
And Lot lifted his eyes and saw all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered everywhere (before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah) like the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt as you go toward Zoar.
11 A nd Lot chose for himself all the plain of the Jordan; and Lot went toward the east. And they separated the one from the other:
Then Lot chose for himself all the plain of Jordan, and Lot journeyed east. And they separated from each other.
12 A bram dwelt in the land of Canaan; and Lot dwelt in the cities of the plain, and pitched tents as far as Sodom.
Abram dwelt in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelt in the cities of the plain and pitched his tent even as far as Sodom.
13 A nd the people of Sodom were wicked, and great sinners before Jehovah.
But the men of Sodom were exceedingly wicked and sinful against the Lord.
14 A nd Jehovah said to Abram, after that Lot had separated himself from him, Lift up now thine eyes, and look from the place where thou art, northward and southward and eastward and westward;
And the Lord said to Abram, after Lot had separated from him: “Lift your eyes now and look from the place where you are—northward, southward, eastward, and westward;
15 f or all the land that thou seest will I give to thee, and to thy seed for ever.
for all the land which you see I give to you and your descendants forever.
16 A nd I will make thy seed as the dust of the earth, so that if any one can number the dust of the earth, thy seed also will be numbered.
And I will make your descendants as the dust of the earth; so that if a man could number the dust of the earth, then your descendants also could be numbered.
17 A rise, walk through the land according to the length of it and according to the breadth of it; for I will give it to thee.
Arise, walk in the land through its length and its width, for I give it to you.”
18 T hen Abram moved tents, and came and dwelt by the oaks of Mamre, which are in Hebron. And he built there an altar to Jehovah.
Then Abram moved his tent, and went and dwelt by the terebinth trees of Mamre, which are in Hebron, and built an altar there to the Lord.
