1 I f it had not been Jehovah who was for us—oh let Israel say—

“If it had not been the Lord who was on our side,” Let Israel now say—

2 I f it had not been Jehovah who was for us, when men rose up against us,

“If it had not been the Lord who was on our side, When men rose up against us,

3 T hen they had swallowed us up alive, when their anger was kindled against us;

Then they would have swallowed us alive, When their wrath was kindled against us;

4 T hen the waters had overwhelmed us, a torrent had gone over our soul;

Then the waters would have overwhelmed us, The stream would have gone over our soul;

5 T hen the proud waters had gone over our soul.

Then the swollen waters Would have gone over our soul.”

6 B lessed be Jehovah, who gave us not up a prey to their teeth!

Blessed be the Lord, Who has not given us as prey to their teeth.

7 O ur soul is escaped as a bird out of the snare of the fowlers: the snare is broken, and we have escaped.

8 O ur help is in the name of Jehovah, the maker of heavens and earth.
