1 A nd Man knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bore Cain, and said, I have acquired a man with Jehovah.

Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, and said, “I have acquired a man from the Lord.”

2 A nd she further bore his brother Abel. And Abel was a shepherd, but Cain was a husbandman.

Then she bore again, this time his brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.

3 A nd in process of time it came to pass that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering to Jehovah.

And in the process of time it came to pass that Cain brought an offering of the fruit of the ground to the Lord.

4 A nd Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock, and of their fat. And Jehovah looked upon Abel, and on his offering;

Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat. And the Lord respected Abel and his offering,

5 a nd upon Cain, and on his offering, he did not look. And Cain was very angry, and his countenance fell.

but He did not respect Cain and his offering. And Cain was very angry, and his countenance fell.

6 A nd Jehovah said to Cain, Why art thou angry, and why is thy countenance fallen?

So the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen?

7 I f thou doest well, will not look up ? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door; and unto thee his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.

If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it.”

8 A nd Cain spoke to Abel his brother, and it came to pass when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.

Now Cain talked with Abel his brother; and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother and killed him.

9 A nd Jehovah said to Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: am I my brother's keeper?

Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?” He said, “I do not know. Am I my brother’s keeper?”

10 A nd he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood is crying to me from the ground.

And He said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood cries out to Me from the ground.

11 A nd now be thou cursed from the ground, which hath opened its mouth to receive thy brother's blood from thy hand.

So now you are cursed from the earth, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand.

12 W hen thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield thee its strength; a wanderer and fugitive shalt thou be on the earth.

When you till the ground, it shall no longer yield its strength to you. A fugitive and a vagabond you shall be on the earth.”

13 A nd Cain said to Jehovah, My punishment is too great to be borne.

And Cain said to the Lord, “My punishment is greater than I can bear!

14 B ehold, thou hast driven me this day from the face of the ground, and from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a wanderer and fugitive on the earth; and it will come to pass, every one who finds me will slay me.

Surely You have driven me out this day from the face of the ground; I shall be hidden from Your face; I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond on the earth, and it will happen that anyone who finds me will kill me.”

15 A nd Jehovah said to him, Therefore, whoever slayeth Cain, it shall be revenged sevenfold. And Jehovah set a mark on Cain, lest any finding him should smite him.

And the Lord said to him, “Therefore, whoever kills Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold.” And the Lord set a mark on Cain, lest anyone finding him should kill him. The Family of Cain

16 A nd Cain went out from the presence of Jehovah, and dwelt in the land of Nod, toward the east of Eden.

Then Cain went out from the presence of the Lord and dwelt in the land of Nod on the east of Eden.

17 A nd Cain knew his wife, and she conceived and bore Enoch. And he built a city; and he called the name of the city after the name of his son Enoch.

And Cain knew his wife, and she conceived and bore Enoch. And he built a city, and called the name of the city after the name of his son—Enoch.

18 A nd to Enoch was born Irad; and Irad begot Mehujael; and Mehujael begot Methushael; and Methushael begot Lemech.

To Enoch was born Irad; and Irad begot Mehujael, and Mehujael begot Methushael, and Methushael begot Lamech.

19 A nd Lemech took two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the second, Zillah.

Then Lamech took for himself two wives: the name of one was Adah, and the name of the second was Zillah.

20 A nd Adah bore Jabal: he was the father of those who dwell in tents, and cattle.

And Adah bore Jabal. He was the father of those who dwell in tents and have livestock.

21 A nd his brother's name was Jubal: he was the father of those who handle the harp and pipe.

His brother’s name was Jubal. He was the father of all those who play the harp and flute.

22 A nd Zillah, she also bore Tubal-Cain, the forger of every kind of tool of brass and iron. And the sister of Tubal-Cain was Naamah.

And as for Zillah, she also bore Tubal-Cain, an instructor of every craftsman in bronze and iron. And the sister of Tubal-Cain was Naamah.

23 A nd Lemech said to his wives: Adah and Zillah, hear my voice, Ye wives of Lemech, listen to my speech. For I have slain a man for my wound, and a youth for my bruise.

Then Lamech said to his wives: “Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; Wives of Lamech, listen to my speech! For I have killed a man for wounding me, Even a young man for hurting me.

24 I f Cain shall be avenged seven-fold; Lemech seventy and seven fold.

If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, Then Lamech seventy-sevenfold.” A New Son

25 A nd Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son, and called his name Seth: … For God has appointed me another seed instead of Abel, because Cain has slain him.

And Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son and named him Seth, “For God has appointed another seed for me instead of Abel, whom Cain killed.”

26 A nd to Seth, to him also was born a son; and he called his name Enosh. Then people began to call on the name of Jehovah.

And as for Seth, to him also a son was born; and he named him Enosh. Then men began to call on the name of the Lord.
