1 I l figlio saggio ascolta l’istruzione di suo padre, ma il beffardo non ascolta rimproveri.

A wise son heareth his father’s instruction: but a scorner heareth not rebuke.

2 P er il frutto delle sue labbra uno gode del bene, ma il desiderio dei perfidi è la violenza.

A man shall eat good by the fruit of his mouth: but the soul of the transgressors shall eat violence.

3 C hi sorveglia la sua bocca preserva la propria vita; chi apre troppo le labbra va incontro alla rovina.

He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life: but he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction.

4 I l pigro desidera e non ha nulla, ma l’operoso sarà pienamente soddisfatto.

The soul of the sluggard desireth, and hath nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat.

5 I l giusto odia la menzogna, ma l’empio getta sugli altri discredito e vergogna.

A righteous man hateth lying: but a wicked man is loathsome, and cometh to shame.

6 L a giustizia protegge chi cammina nell’integrità, ma l’empietà abbatte il peccatore.

Righteousness keepeth him that is upright in the way: but wickedness overthroweth the sinner.

7 C ’è chi fa il ricco e non ha nulla, e c’è chi fa il povero e ha grandi beni.

There is that maketh himself rich, yet hath nothing: there is that maketh himself poor, yet hath great riches.

8 L a ricchezza di un uomo serve come riscatto della sua vita, ma il povero non ode mai minacce.

The ransom of a man’s life are his riches: but the poor heareth not rebuke.

9 L a luce dei giusti è gaia, ma la lampada degli empi si spegne.

The light of the righteous rejoiceth: but the lamp of the wicked shall be put out.

10 D all’orgoglio non viene che contesa, ma la saggezza è con chi dà retta ai consigli.

Only by pride cometh contention: but with the well advised is wisdom.

11 L a ricchezza male acquistata va diminuendo, ma chi accumula a poco a poco, l’aumenta.

Wealth gotten by vanity shall be diminished: but he that gathereth by labour shall increase.

12 L a speranza insoddisfatta fa languire il cuore, ma il desiderio realizzato è un albero di vita.

Hope deferred maketh the heart sick: but when the desire cometh, it is a tree of life.

13 C hi disprezza la parola si costituisce, di fronte ad essa, debitore, ma chi rispetta il comandamento sarà ricompensato.

Whoso despiseth the word shall be destroyed: but he that feareth the commandment shall be rewarded.

14 L ’insegnamento del saggio è una fonte di vita per schivare le insidie della morte.

The law of the wise is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death.

15 B uon senno procura favore, ma la via dei perfidi è senza fine.

Good understanding giveth favour: but the way of transgressors is hard.

16 O gni uomo accorto agisce con conoscenza, ma l’insensato fa sfoggio di follia.

Every prudent man dealeth with knowledge: but a fool layeth open his folly.

17 I l messaggero malvagio cade in sciagure, ma l’ambasciatore fedele porta guarigione.

A wicked messenger falleth into mischief: but a faithful ambassador is health.

18 M iseria e vergogna a chi rifiuta la correzione, ma chi dà retta alla riprensione è onorato.

Poverty and shame shall be to him that refuseth instruction: but he that regardeth reproof shall be honoured.

19 I l desiderio adempiuto è dolce all’anima, ma agli insensati fa orrore evitare il male.

The desire accomplished is sweet to the soul: but it is abomination to fools to depart from evil.

20 C hi va con i saggi diventa saggio, ma il compagno degli insensati diventa cattivo.

He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.

21 I l male perseguita i peccatori, ma il giusto è ricompensato con il bene.

Evil pursueth sinners: but to the righteous good shall be repayed.

22 L ’uomo buono lascia un’eredità ai figli dei suoi figli, ma la ricchezza del peccatore è riservata al giusto.

A good man leaveth an inheritance to his children’s children: and the wealth of the sinner is laid up for the just.

23 I l campo lavorato dal povero dà cibo in abbondanza, ma c’è chi perisce per mancanza di equità.

Much food is in the tillage of the poor: but there is that is destroyed for want of judgment.

24 C hi risparmia la verga odia suo figlio, ma chi lo ama lo corregge per tempo.

He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes.

25 I l giusto ha di che mangiare a sazietà, ma il ventre degli empi manca di cibo.

The righteous eateth to the satisfying of his soul: but the belly of the wicked shall want.
