1 B ut the Spirit saith expressly, that in later times some shall fall away from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of demons,

¶ Now the Spirit speaks expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, listening to spirits of error and doctrines of demons;

2 t hrough the hypocrisy of men that speak lies, branded in their own conscience as with a hot iron;

that in hypocrisy shall speak lies; having their conscience seared as with a hot iron;

3 f orbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God created to be received with thanksgiving by them that believe and know the truth.

they shall forbid to marry and shall command men to abstain from foods, which God has created to be received with thanksgiving by those who are faithful and have known the truth.

4 F or every creature of God is good, and nothing is to be rejected, if it be received with thanksgiving:

For everything that God created is good, and nothing is to be refused, if it is received with thanksgiving,

5 f or it is sanctified through the word of God and prayer.

for it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.

6 I f thou put the brethren in mind of these things, thou shalt be a good minister of Christ Jesus, nourished in the words of the faith, and of the good doctrine which thou hast followed until now:

¶ If thou put these things before the brethren, thou shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine, unto which thou hast attained.

7 b ut refuse profane and old wives' fables. And exercise thyself unto godliness:

But refuse profane and old wives’ fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness.

8 f or bodily exercise is profitable for a little; but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life which now is, and of that which is to come.

For bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come.

9 F aithful is the saying, and worthy of all acceptation.

The Word is faithful and worthy of acceptation by all.

10 F or to this end we labor and strive, because we have our hope set on the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, specially of them that believe.

For this we both labour and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, specially of those that believe.

11 T hese things command and teach.

Command and teach this.

12 L et no man despise thy youth; but be thou an ensample to them that believe, in word, in manner of life, in love, in faith, in purity.

Let no man despise thy youth, but be thou an example of the faithful in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.

13 T ill I come, give heed to reading, to exhortation, to teaching.

Until I come, occupy thyself reading, exhorting, teaching.

14 N eglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery.

Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which is given unto thee to prophesy, through the laying on of the hands of the elders.

15 B e diligent in these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy progress may be manifest unto all.

Occupy thyself in these things with care, for in this is everything, that thy profiting may be manifest unto all.

16 T ake heed to thyself, and to thy teaching. Continue in these things; for in doing this thou shalt save both thyself and them that hear thee.

Take heed unto thyself and unto the doctrine; be diligent in this, for in doing so thou shalt both save thyself and those that hear thee.
