John 9 ~ John 9

1 A nd as he passed by, he saw a man blind from his birth.

¶ And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man who was blind from his birth.

2 A nd his disciples asked him, saying, Rabbi, who sinned, this man, or his parents, that he should be born blind?

And his disciples asked him, saying, Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?

3 J esus answered, Neither did this man sin, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.

Jesus answered, Neither has this man sinned nor his parents, but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.

4 W e must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.

It is expedient that I do the works of him that sent me while it is day; the night comes, when no one can work.

5 W hen I am in the world, I am the light of the world.

As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.

6 W hen he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and anointed his eyes with the clay,

When he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground and made clay of the spittle, and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay

7 a nd said unto him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam (which is by interpretation, Sent). He went away therefore, and washed, and came seeing.

and said unto him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam (which is by interpretation, Sent). Then he went and washed and came back seeing.

8 T he neighbors therefore, and they that saw him aforetime, that he was a beggar, said, Is not this he that sat and begged?

¶ The neighbours, therefore, and those who before had seen him that he was blind said, Is not this he that sat and begged?

9 O thers said, It is he: others said, No, but he is like him. He said, I am he.

Some said, This is he; others said, He is like him; but he said, I am he.

10 T hey said therefore unto him, How then were thine eyes opened?

Then they said unto him, How were thine eyes opened?

11 H e answered, The man that is called Jesus made clay, and anointed mine eyes, and said unto me, Go to Siloam, and wash: so I went away and washed, and I received sight.

He answered and said, A man that is called Jesus made clay and anointed my eyes and said unto me, Go to the pool of Siloam, and wash; and I went and washed, and I received sight.

12 A nd they said unto him, Where is he? He saith, I know not.

Then said they unto him, Where is he? He said, I know not.

13 T hey bring to the Pharisees him that aforetime was blind.

¶ They brought to the Pharisees him that beforehand had been blind.

14 N ow it was the sabbath on the day when Jesus made the clay, and opened his eyes.

And it was the sabbath day when Jesus had made the clay and had opened his eyes.

15 A gain therefore the Pharisees also asked him how he received his sight. And he said unto them, He put clay upon mine eyes, and I washed, and I see.

Then again the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. He said unto them, He put clay upon my eyes, and I washed and do see.

16 S ome therefore of the Pharisees said, This man is not from God, because he keepeth not the sabbath. But others said, How can a man that is a sinner do such signs? And there was division among them.

Therefore some of the Pharisees said, This man is not of God because he does not keep the sabbath day. Others said, How can a man that is a sinner do such signs? And there was a division among them.

17 T hey say therefore unto the blind man again, What sayest thou of him, in that he opened thine eyes? And he said, He is a prophet.

They said unto the blind man again, What sayest thou of him, that has opened thine eyes? He said, He is a prophet.

18 T he Jews therefore did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind, and had received his sight, until they called the parents of him that had received his sight,

But the Jews did not believe concerning him that he had been blind and received his sight until they called the parents of him that had received his sight.

19 a nd asked them, saying, Is this your son, who ye say was born blind? How then doth he now see?

And they asked them, saying, Is this your son, who ye say was born blind? how then does he now see?

20 H is parents answered and said, We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind:

His parents answered them and said, We know that this is our son and that he was born blind;

21 b ut how he now seeth, we know not; or who opened his eyes, we know not: ask him; he is of age; he shall speak for himself.

but by what means he now sees, we know not; or who has opened his eyes, we know not; he is of age, ask him; he shall speak for himself.

22 T hese things said his parents, because they feared the Jews: for the Jews had agreed already, that if any man should confess him to be Christ, he should be put out of the synagogue.

These words spoke his parents because they feared the Jews, for the Jews had agreed already that if anyone did confess that he was the Christ, he should be put out of the synagogue.

23 T herefore said his parents, He is of age; ask him.

Therefore his parents said, He is of age, ask him.

24 S o they called a second time the man that was blind, and said unto him, Give glory to God: we know that this man is a sinner.

Then they called again the man that had been blind and said unto him, Give glory to God; we know that this man is a sinner.

25 H e therefore answered, Whether he is a sinner, I know not: one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see.

He answered and said, Whether he is a sinner or not, I do not know; one thing I know, that having been blind, now I see.

26 T hey said therefore unto him, What did he to thee? How opened he thine eyes?

Then said they to him again, What did he do to thee? How did he open thine eyes?

27 H e answered them, I told you even now, and ye did not hear; wherefore would ye hear it again? would ye also become his disciples?

He answered them, I have told you already, and ye have heard; what more would ye hear? Do ye also desire to be his disciples?

28 A nd they reviled him, and said, Thou art his disciple; but we are disciples of Moses.

Then they reviled him and said, Be thou his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses.

29 W e know that God hath spoken unto Moses: but as for this man, we know not whence he is.

We know that God spoke unto Moses; as for this fellow, we do not know where he is from.

30 T he man answered and said unto them, Why, herein is the marvel, that ye know not whence he is, and yet he opened mine eyes.

The man answered and said unto them, Indeed this is a marvellous thing that ye do not know where he is from, and yet he has opened my eyes.

31 W e know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and do his will, him he heareth.

Now we know that God does not hear sinners, but if anyone should fear God and do his will, him he will hear.

32 S ince the world began it was never heard that any one opened the eyes of a man born blind.

Since the world began it has not been heard of that anyone opened the eyes of one that was born blind.

33 I f this man were not from God, he could do nothing.

If this man were not of God, he could do nothing.

34 T hey answered and said unto him, Thou wast altogether born in sins, and dost thou teach us? And they cast him out.

They answered and said unto him, Thou wast altogether born in sins, and dost thou teach us? And they cast him out.

35 J esus heard that they had cast him out; and finding him, he said, Dost thou believe on the Son of God?

¶ Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and finding him, he said unto him, Dost thou believe in the Son of God?

36 H e answered and said, And who is he, Lord, that I may believe on him?

He answered and said, Who is he, Lord, that I might believe in him?

37 J esus said unto him, Thou hast both seen him, and he it is that speaketh with thee.

And Jesus said unto him, Thou hast seen him, and it is he that talks with thee.

38 A nd he said, Lord, I believe. And he worshipped him.

And he said, Lord, I believe. And he worshipped him.

39 A nd Jesus said, For judgment came I into this world, that they that see not may see; and that they that see may become blind.

¶ And Jesus said, For judgment I have come into this world, that those who do not see might see and that those who see might be blinded.

40 T hose of the Pharisees who were with him heard these things, and said unto him, Are we also blind?

And some of the Pharisees who were with him heard these words and said unto him, Are we blind also?

41 J esus said unto them, If ye were blind, ye would have no sin: but now ye say, We see: your sin remaineth.

Jesus said unto them, If ye were blind, ye should have no sin; but now because ye say, We see, therefore your sin abides.
