1 B ut I determined this for myself, that I would not come again to you with sorrow.
¶ But I determined this with myself, that I would not come again to you in grief.
2 F or if I make you sorry, who then is he that maketh me glad but he that is made sorry by me?
For if I make you grieve, who is he then that shall make me glad, but the same who is grieved by me?
3 A nd I wrote this very thing, lest, when I came, I should have sorrow from them of whom I ought to rejoice; having confidence in you all, that my joy is the joy of you all.
And I wrote this same unto you, lest when I came, I should have grief from those of whom I ought to rejoice; having confidence in you all, that my joy is the joy of you all.
4 F or out of much affliction and anguish of heart I wrote unto you with many tears; not that ye should be made sorry, but that ye might know the love that I have more abundantly unto you.
For out of much affliction and anguish of heart I wrote unto you with many tears; not that ye should be grieved, but that ye might know how much more charity I have towards you.
5 B ut if any hath caused sorrow, he hath caused sorrow, not to me, but in part (that I press not too heavily) to you all.
¶ But if any have caused me grief, he has not grieved me, but in part, that I may not put a burden on you all.
6 S ufficient to such a one is this punishment which was inflicted by the many;
Sufficient to such a one is this reprehension, which was inflicted of many.
7 s o that contrariwise ye should rather forgive him and comfort him, lest by any means such a one should be swallowed up with his overmuch sorrow.
So that contrariwise ye ought rather to forgive him and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one should be swallowed up with too much grief.
8 W herefore I beseech you to confirm your love toward him.
Therefore I beseech you that ye would confirm your charity toward him.
9 F or to this end also did I write, that I might know the proof of you, whether ye are obedient in all things.
For to this end also I wrote, that I might know the proof of you, whether ye are obedient in all things.
10 B ut to whom ye forgive anything, I forgive also: for what I also have forgiven, if I have forgiven anything, for your sakes have I forgiven it in the presence of Christ;
To whom ye forgive any thing, I forgive also; for if I forgave any thing, to whom I forgave it, for your sakes I forgave it in the person of Christ,
11 t hat no advantage may be gained over us by Satan: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

12 N ow when I came to Troas for the gospel of Christ, and when a door was opened unto me in the Lord,
¶ Having come to Troas for the gospel of the Christ, even though a door was opened unto me in the Lord,
13 I had no relief for my spirit, because I found not Titus my brother: but taking my leave of them, I went forth into Macedonia.
I had no rest in my spirit because I did not find Titus my brother, but taking my leave of them, I went from there into Macedonia.
14 B ut thanks be unto God, who always leadeth us in triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest through us the savor of his knowledge in every place.
Now thanks be unto God, who always causes us to triumph in the Christ and makes manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place.
15 F or we are a sweet savor of Christ unto God, in them that are saved, and in them that perish;
For we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ, in those that are saved and in those that perish;
16 t o the one a savor from death unto death; to the other a savor from life unto life. And who is sufficient for these things?
to the one we are the savour of death unto death and to the other the savour of life unto life. And who is sufficient for these things?
17 F or we are not as the many, corrupting the word of God: but as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God, speak we in Christ.
For we are not as many, false merchandisers of the word of God, but as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God we speak in Christ.
