1 A nd after six days Jesus taketh with him Peter, and James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into a high mountain apart:

Six days later Jesus took with Him Peter and James and his brother John. He led them up to a high mountain by themselves.

2 a nd he was transfigured before them; and his face did shine as the sun, and his garments became white as the light.

He was changed in looks before them. His face was as bright as the sun. His clothes looked as white as light.

3 A nd behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elijah talking with him.

Moses and Elijah were seen talking with Jesus.

4 A nd Peter answered, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou wilt, I will make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah.

Then Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If You will let us, we will build three altars here. One will be for You and one for Moses and one for Elijah.”

5 W hile he was yet speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold, a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.

While Peter was speaking, a bright cloud came over them. A voice from the cloud said, “This is My much-loved Son, I am very happy with Him. Listen to Him!”

6 A nd when the disciples heard it, they fell on their face, and were sore afraid.

When the followers heard this, they got down on the ground on their faces and were very much afraid.

7 A nd Jesus came and touched them and said, Arise, and be not afraid.

Jesus came and put His hand on them. He said, “Get up! Do not be afraid.”

8 A nd lifting up their eyes, they saw no one, save Jesus only.

When they looked up, they saw no one there but Jesus only.

9 A nd as they were coming down from the mountain, Jesus commanded them, saying, Tell the vision to no man, until the Son of man be risen from the dead.

As they came down from the mountain, Jesus told them in strong words, saying, “Do not tell anyone what you have seen until the Son of Man is raised from the dead.” The Followers Ask about Elijah

10 A nd his disciples asked him, saying, Why then say the scribes that Elijah must first come?

The followers asked Jesus, “Then why do the teachers of the Law say that Elijah must come first?”

11 A nd he answered and said, Elijah indeed cometh, and shall restore all things:

He said, “For sure, Elijah will come first and get things ready.

12 b ut I say into you, that Elijah is come already, and they knew him not, but did unto him whatsoever they would. Even so shall the Son of man also suffer of them.

But I tell you, Elijah has already come and they did not know him. They did to him whatever they wanted to do. In the same way the Son of Man will suffer from them also.”

13 T hen understood the disciples that he spake unto them of John the Baptist.

Then the followers understood He was talking about John the Baptist. A Boy with a Demon Is Healed

14 A nd when they were come to the multitude, there came to him a man, kneeling to him, saying,

When they came to many people, a man came up to Jesus and got on his knees. He said,

15 L ord, have mercy on my son: for he is epileptic, and suffereth grievously; for oft-times he falleth into the fire, and off-times into the water.

“Lord, have pity on my son. He is very sick and at times loses the use of his mind. Many times he falls into the fire or into the water.

16 A nd I brought him to thy disciples, and they could not cure him.

I took him to Your followers but they were not able to heal him.”

17 A nd Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I bear with you? bring him hither to me.

Then Jesus said, “You people of this day have no faith and you are going the wrong way. How long must I be with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring him here to Me.”

18 A nd Jesus rebuked him; and the demon went out of him: and the boy was cured from that hour.

Jesus spoke sharp words to the demon and the demon came out of him. At once the boy was healed.

19 T hen came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast it out?

The followers came to Jesus when He was alone. They said, “Why were we not able to put the demon out?”

20 A nd he saith unto them, Because of your little faith: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.

Jesus said to them, “Because you have so little faith. For sure, I tell you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to over there,’ and it would move over. You will be able to do anything.

21 B ut this kind goeth not out save by prayer and fasting.

But this kind of demon does not go out but by prayer and by going without food so you can pray better.” Jesus Tells of His Death the Second Time

22 A nd while they abode in Galilee, Jesus said unto them, The Son of man shall be delivered up into the hands of men;

While they were still in Galilee, Jesus said to the followers, “The Son of Man will be handed over to men.

23 a nd they shall kill him, and the third day he shall be raised up. And they were exceeding sorry.

They will kill Him, but He will be raised from the dead three days later.” The followers were very sad.

24 A nd when they were come to Capernaum, they that received the half-shekel came to Peter, and said, Doth not your teacher pay the half-shekel?

They came to the city of Capernaum. Those who gathered the tax for the house of God came to Peter. They said, “Does not your Teacher pay tax money for the house of God?”

25 H e saith, Yea. And when he came into the house, Jesus spake first to him, saying, What thinkest thou, Simon? the kings of the earth, from whom do they receive toll or tribute? from their sons, or from strangers?

Peter said, “Yes.” When Peter came into the house, Jesus spoke to him first. He said, “What do you think, Simon? From whom do the kings of this earth get their money or taxes, from their own people or from those of another country?”

26 A nd when he said, From strangers, Jesus said unto him, Therefore the sons are free.

Peter said to Him, “From those of another country.” Then Jesus said, “Then their own people do not pay taxes.

27 B ut, lest we cause them to stumble, go thou to the sea, and cast a hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up; and when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a shekel: that take, and give unto them for me and thee.

But so we will not make them to be troubled, go down to the lake and throw in a hook. Take the first fish that comes up. In its mouth you will find a piece of money. Take that and pay the tax for Me and yourself.”
