1 A nd all the congregation of the children of Israel journeyed from the wilderness of Sin, by their journeys, according to the commandment of Jehovah, and encamped in Rephidim: and there was no water for the people to drink.

All the people of Israel left the Desert of Sin, traveling from one place to another as the Lord told them. They set up their tents at Rephidim. But there was no water for the people to drink.

2 W herefore the people stove with Moses, and said, Give us water that we may drink. And Moses said unto them, Why strive ye with me? Wherefore do ye tempt Jehovah?

So the people argued with Moses, saying, “Give us water to drink.” And Moses said to them, “Why do you argue with me? Why do you test the Lord?”

3 A nd the people thirsted there for water; and the people murmured against Moses, and said, Wherefore hast thou brought us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our cattle with thirst?

But the people were thirsty there for water. They complained against Moses, saying, “Why did you bring us out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and animals with thirst?”

4 A nd Moses cried unto Jehovah, saying, What shall I do unto this people? They are almost ready to stone me.

So Moses called to the Lord, saying, “What should I do with these people? They are almost ready to throw stones at me.”

5 A nd Jehovah said unto Moses, Pass on before the people, and take with thee of the elders of Israel; and they rod, wherewith thou smotest the river, take in thy hand, and go.

The Lord said to Moses, “Pass in front of the people and take some of the leaders of Israel with you. Take the special stick in your hand with which you hit the Nile, and go.

6 B ehold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.

See, I will stand before you there on the rock at Horeb. When you hit the rock, water will come out of it and the people will drink.” And Moses did so, with the leaders of Israel watching.

7 A nd he called the name of the place Massah, and Meribah, because of the striving of the children of Israel, and because they tempted Jehovah, saying, Is Jehovah among us, or not?

He called the name of the place Massah and Meribah because of the arguing of the people of Israel, and because they tested the Lord, saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?” War with Amalek

8 T hen came Amalek, and fought with Israel in Rephidim.

Then Amalek came and fought against Israel at Rephidim.

9 A nd Moses said unto Joshua, Choose us out men, and go out, fight with Amalek: to-morrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in my hand.

So Moses said to Joshua, “Choose men for us. And go out and fight against Amalek. Tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the special stick of God in my hand.”

10 S o Joshua did as Moses had said to him, and fought with Amalek: and Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.

Joshua did as Moses told him. He fought against Amalek. And Moses, Aaron and Hur went up to the top of the hill.

11 A nd it came to pass, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed; and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed.

When Moses held up his hand, Israel would be winning. But when he let his hand down, Amalek would win.

12 B ut Moses' hands were heavy; and they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat thereon; and Aaron and Hur stayed up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side; And his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.

Moses’ hands became tired. So they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it. Then Aaron and Hur held up his hands, one on each side. His hands did not move until the sun went down.

13 A nd Joshua discomfited Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.

So Joshua destroyed Amalek and his people with the sword.

14 A nd Jehovah said unto Moses, Write this for a memorial in a book, and rehearse it in the ears of Joshua: that I will utterly blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven.

Then the Lord said to Moses, “Write this in a book, to be remembered, and tell Joshua that I will take away everything under heaven that would help you remember Amalek.”

15 A nd Moses built an altar, and called the name of it Jehovah-nissi;

Moses built an altar and gave it the name The Lord is My Banner.

16 A nd he said, Jehovah hath sworn: Jehovah will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.

And he said, “Because the Lord has promised to have war against Amalek through all time.”
