Deuteronomy 3 ~ Deuteronomy 3

1 T hen we turned, and went up the way to Bashan: and Og the king of Bashan came out against us, he and all his people, unto battle at Edrei.

“Then we turned and went up the road to Bashan. Og king of Bashan and all his people came out to meet us in battle.

2 A nd Jehovah said unto me, Fear him not; for I have delivered him, and all his people, and his land, into thy hand; and thou shalt do unto him as thou didst unto Sihon king of the Amorites, who dwelt at Heshbon.

But the Lord said to me, ‘Do not be afraid of him. For I have given him and all his people and his land to you. Do to him just as you did to Sihon king of the Amorites who lived at Heshbon.’

3 S o Jehovah our God delivered into our hand Og also, the king of Bashan, and all his people: and we smote him until none was left to him remaining.

So the Lord our God gave us Og king of Bashan and all his people also. We destroyed them until no one was left alive.

4 A nd we took all his cities at that time; there was not a city which we took not from them; threescore cities, all the region of Argob, the kingdom of Og in Bashan.

And we took all his cities at that time. There was not a city which we did not take from them. We took sixty cities, the whole land of Argob, the nation of Og in Bashan.

5 A ll these were cities fortified with high walls, gates, and bars; besides the unwalled towns a great many.

All these cities were built strong, with high walls, gates and iron. There were many towns without walls also.

6 A nd we utterly destroyed them, as we did unto Sihon king of Heshbon, utterly destroying every inhabited city, with the women and the little ones.

We destroyed them, as we had done to Sihon king of Heshbon. We destroyed every man, woman and child in every city.

7 B ut all the cattle, and the spoil of the cities, we took for a prey unto ourselves.

But we took for ourselves all the animals and what was left in the cities.

8 A nd we took the land at that time out of the hand of the two kings of the Amorites that were beyond the Jordan, from the valley of the Arnon unto mount Hermon;

So we took the land at that time from the two kings of the Amorites who were on the east side of the Jordan, from the valley of Arnon to Mount Hermon

9 ( which Hermon the Sidonians call Sirion, and the Amorites call it Senir;)

(Sidonians call Hermon Sirion, and the Amorites call it Senir).

10 a ll the cities of the plain, and all Gilead, and all Bashan, unto Salecah and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan.

We took all the cities of the plain and all Gilead and all Bashan, as far as Salecah and Edrei, cities of the nation of Og in Bashan.

11 ( For only Og king of Bashan remained of the remnant of the Rephaim; behold, his bedstead was a bedstead of iron; is it not in Rabbah of the children of Ammon? nine cubits was the length thereof, and four cubits the breadth of it, after the cubit of a man.)

(For only Og king of Bashan was left of the children of the Rephaim. His bed was made of iron. It is in Rabbah of the sons of Ammon. It was as long as five steps, and as wide as two long steps.) Dividing the Land East of the Jordan

12 A nd this land we took in possession at that time: from Aroer, which is by the valley of the Arnon, and half the hill-country of Gilead, and the cities thereof, gave I unto the Reubenites and to the Gadites:

“So we took this land for ourselves at that time. I gave to the Reubenites and the Gadites the land from Aroer, which is by the valley of Arnon, and half the hill country of Gilead.

13 a nd the rest of Gilead, and all Bashan, the kingdom of Og, gave I unto the half-tribe of Manasseh; all the region of Argob, even all Bashan. (The same is called the land of Rephaim.

I gave to the half-family of Manasseh the rest of Gilead and all Bashan, the nation of Og, all the land of Argob. It is called the land of Rephaim.

14 J air the son of Manasseh took all the region of Argob, unto the border of the Geshurites and the Maacathites, and called them, even Bashan, after his own name, Havvoth-jair, unto this day.)

Manasseh’s son Jair took all the land of Argob as far as the land of the Geshurites and the Maacathites. He called Bashan after his own name, Havvothjair. And that is its name to this day.

15 A nd I gave Gilead unto Machir.

I gave Gilead to Machir.

16 A nd unto the Reubenites and unto the Gadites I gave from Gilead even unto the valley of the Arnon, the middle of the valley, and the border thereof, even unto the river Jabbok, which is the border of the children of Ammon;

To the Reubenites and the Gadites I gave from Gilead to the valley of Arnon, from the center of the valley to the river Jabbok, beside the Ammonites.

17 t he Arabah also, and the Jordan and the border thereof, from Chinnereth even unto the sea of the Arabah, the Salt Sea, under the slopes of Pisgah eastward.

I gave them the Arabah also, with the Jordan as its west side, from Chinnereth as far as the sea of the Arabah, the Salt Sea, at the bottom of the hills of Pisgah on the east.

18 A nd I commanded you at that time, saying, Jehovah your God hath given you this land to possess it: ye shall pass over armed before your brethren the children of Israel, all the men of valor.

“At that time I told you, ‘The Lord your God has given you this land for your own. All you men with strength of heart will cross over ready to fight before your brothers, the sons of Israel.

19 B ut your wives, and your little ones, and your cattle, (I know that ye have much cattle,) shall abide in your cities which I have given you,

But your wives, your little ones and your animals (I know you have many animals) will stay in your cities that I have given you.

20 u ntil Jehovah give rest unto your brethren, as unto you, and they also possess the land which Jehovah your God giveth them beyond the Jordan: then shall ye return every man unto his possession, which I have given you.

They will stay until the Lord gives rest to your brothers as He has to you, and until they own the land the Lord your God will give them on the other side of the Jordan. Then every one of you may return to what is his, which I have given you.’

21 A nd I commanded Joshua at that time, saying, Thine eyes have seen all that Jehovah your God hath done unto these two kings: so shall Jehovah do unto all the kingdoms whither thou goest over.

And then I told Joshua, ‘Your eyes have seen all the Lord your God has done to these two kings. The Lord will do the same to all the nations through which you pass.

22 Y e shall not fear them; for Jehovah your God, he it is that fighteth for you.

Do not be afraid of them. For the Lord your God is the One fighting for you.’ Moses Not Allowed to Cross the Jordan

23 A nd I besought Jehovah at that time, saying,

“After that I begged the Lord,

24 O Lord Jehovah, thou hast begun to show thy servant thy greatness, and thy strong hand: for what god is there in heaven or in earth, that can do according to thy works, and according to thy mighty acts?

‘O Lord God, You have begun to show Your servant Your great power and Your strong hand. For what god is there in heaven or on earth who can do such works and powerful acts as You do?

25 L et me go over, I pray thee, and see the good land that is beyond the Jordan, that goodly mountain, and Lebanon.

I ask of You, let me cross over and see the good land on the other side of the Jordan, that good hill country and Lebanon.’

26 B ut Jehovah was wroth with me for your sakes, and hearkened not unto me; and Jehovah said unto me, Let it suffice thee; speak no more unto me of this matter.

But the Lord was angry with me because of you. He would not listen to me. The Lord told me, ‘Enough! Speak to Me no more about this.

27 G et thee up unto the top of Pisgah, and lift up thine eyes westward, and northward, and southward, and eastward, and behold with thine eyes: for thou shalt not go over this Jordan.

Go up to the top of Pisgah, and look to the west and north and south and east. See it with your eyes, for you will not cross over this Jordan.

28 B ut charge Joshua, and encourage him, and strengthen him; for he shall go over before this people, and he shall cause them to inherit the land which thou shalt see.

But tell Joshua what is to be done. Comfort him and give him strength. For he will cross in front of this people. And he will give them for their own the land that you will see.’

29 S o we abode in the valley over against Beth-peor.

So we stayed in the valley beside Beth-peor.
