Mark 9 ~ Mark 9

picture

1 A nd he said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That there be some of them that stand here, which shall not taste of death, till they have seen the kingdom of God come with power.

And Jesus said to them, Truly and solemnly I say to you, there are some standing here who will in no way taste death before they see the kingdom of God come in power.

2 A nd after six days Jesus taketh with him Peter, and James, and John, and leadeth them up into an high mountain apart by themselves: and he was transfigured before them.

Six days after this, Jesus took with Him Peter and James and John and led them up on a high mountain apart by themselves. And He was transfigured before them and became resplendent with divine brightness.

3 A nd his raiment became shining, exceeding white as snow; so as no fuller on earth can white them.

And His garments became glistening, intensely white, as no fuller (cloth dresser, launderer) on earth could bleach them.

4 A nd there appeared unto them Elias with Moses: and they were talking with Jesus.

And Elijah appeared to them, accompanied by Moses, and they were holding conversation with Jesus.

5 A nd Peter answered and said to Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias.

And Peter took up the conversation, saying, Master, it is good and suitable and beautiful for us to be here. Let us make three booths (tents)—one for You and one for Moses and one for Elijah.

6 F or he wist not what to say; for they were sore afraid.

For he did not know what to say, for they were in a violent fright ( aghast with dread).

7 A nd there was a cloud that overshadowed them: and a voice came out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him.

And a cloud threw a shadow upon them, and a voice came out of the cloud, saying, This is My Son, the '> most dearworthy] Beloved One. Be constantly listening to and obeying Him!

8 A nd suddenly, when they had looked round about, they saw no man any more, save Jesus only with themselves.

And looking around, they suddenly no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus only.

9 A nd as they came down from the mountain, he charged them that they should tell no man what things they had seen, till the Son of man were risen from the dead.

And as they were coming back down the mountain, He admonished and expressly ordered them to tell no one what they had seen until the Son of Man should rise from among the dead.

10 A nd they kept that saying with themselves, questioning one with another what the rising from the dead should mean.

So they carefully and faithfully kept the matter to themselves, questioning and disputing with one another about what rising from among the dead meant.

11 A nd they asked him, saying, Why say the scribes that Elias must first come?

And they asked Him, Why do the scribes say that it is necessary for Elijah to come first?

12 A nd he answered and told them, Elias verily cometh first, and restoreth all things; and how it is written of the Son of man, that he must suffer many things, and be set at nought.

And He said to them, Elijah, it is true, does come first to restore all things and set them to rights. And how is it written of the Son of Man that He will suffer many things and be utterly despised and be treated with contempt and rejected?

13 B ut I say unto you, That Elias is indeed come, and they have done unto him whatsoever they listed, as it is written of him.

But I tell you that Elijah has already come, and did to him whatever they desired, as it is written of him.

14 A nd when he came to his disciples, he saw a great multitude about them, and the scribes questioning with them.

And when they came to the disciples, they saw a great crowd around them and scribes questioning and disputing with them.

15 A nd straightway all the people, when they beheld him, were greatly amazed, and running to him saluted him.

And immediately all the crowd, when they saw Jesus '> returning from the holy mount, His face and person yet glistening], they were greatly amazed and ran up to Him greeted Him.

16 A nd he asked the scribes, What question ye with them?

And He asked them, About what are you questioning and discussing with them?

17 A nd one of the multitude answered and said, Master, I have brought unto thee my son, which hath a dumb spirit;

And one of the throng replied to Him, Teacher, I brought my son to You, for he has a dumb spirit.

18 a nd wheresoever he taketh him, he teareth him: and he foameth, and gnasheth with his teeth, and pineth away: and I spake to thy disciples that they should cast him out; and they could not.

And wherever it lays hold of him, it dashes him down and convulses him, and he foams and grinds his teeth, and he '> falls into a motionless stupor and] is wasting away. And I asked Your disciples to drive it out, and they were not able.

19 H e answereth him, and saith, O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him unto me.

And He answered them, O unbelieving generation! How long shall I with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him to Me.

20 A nd they brought him unto him: and when he saw him, straightway the spirit tare him; and he fell on the ground, and wallowed foaming.

So they brought to Him, and when the spirit saw Him, at once it completely convulsed the boy, and he fell to the ground and kept rolling about, foaming.

21 A nd he asked his father, How long is it ago since this came unto him? And he said, Of a child.

And asked his father, How long has he had this? And he answered, From the time he was a little boy.

22 A nd ofttimes it hath cast him into the fire, and into the waters, to destroy him: but if thou canst do any thing, have compassion on us, and help us.

And it has often thrown him both into fire and into water, intending to kill him. But if You can do anything, do have pity on us and help us.

23 J esus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.

And Jesus said,, If You can do anything? all things can be (are possible) to him who believes!

24 A nd straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.

At once the father of the boy gave '> eager, piercing, inarticulate] cry with tears, and he said, Lord, I believe! help my weakness of faith!

25 W hen Jesus saw that the people came running together, he rebuked the foul spirit, saying unto him, Thou dumb and deaf spirit, I charge thee, come out of him, and enter no more into him.

But when Jesus noticed that a crowd came running together, He rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, You dumb and deaf spirit, I charge you to come out of him and never go into him again.

26 A nd the spirit cried, and rent him sore, and came out of him: and he was as one dead; insomuch that many said, He is dead.

And after giving a shriek of anguish and convulsing him terribly, it came out; and the boy lay like a corpse, so that many of them said, He is dead.

27 B ut Jesus took him by the hand, and lifted him up; and he arose.

But Jesus took '> a strong grip of] his hand and began lifting him up, and he stood.

28 A nd when he was come into the house, his disciples asked him privately, Why could not we cast him out?

And when He had gone indoors, His disciples asked Him privately, Why could not we drive it out?

29 A nd he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting.

And He replied to them, This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer and fasting.

30 A nd they departed thence, and passed through Galilee; and he would not that any man should know it.

They went on from there and passed along through Galilee. And He did not wish to have anyone know it,

31 F or he taught his disciples, and said unto them, The Son of man is delivered into the hands of men, and they shall kill him; and after that he is killed, he shall rise the third day.

For He was teaching His disciples. He said to them, The Son of Man is being delivered into the hands of men, and they will put Him to death; and when He has been killed, after three days He will rise '> from death].

32 B ut they understood not that saying, and were afraid to ask him.

But they did not comprehend what He was saying, and they were afraid to ask Him.

33 A nd he came to Capernaum: and being in the house he asked them, What was it that ye disputed among yourselves by the way?

And they arrived at Capernaum; and when in the house, He asked them, What were you discussing and arguing about on the road?

34 B ut they held their peace: for by the way they had disputed among themselves, who should be the greatest.

But they kept still, for on the road they had discussed and disputed with one another as to who was the greatest.

35 A nd he sat down, and called the twelve, and saith unto them, If any man desire to be first, the same shall be last of all, and servant of all.

And He sat down and called the Twelve, and He said to them, If anyone desires to be first, he must be last of all, and servant of all.

36 A nd he took a child, and set him in the midst of them: and when he had taken him in his arms, he said unto them,

And He took a little child and put him in the center of their group; and taking him in arms, He said to them,

37 W hosoever shall receive one of such children in my name, receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me, receiveth not me, but him that sent me.

Whoever in My name and for My sake accepts and receives and welcomes one such child also accepts and receives and welcomes Me; and whoever so receives Me receives not only Me but Him Who sent Me.

38 A nd John answered him, saying, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name, and he followeth not us: and we forbad him, because he followeth not us.

John said to Him, Teacher, we saw a man who does not follow along with us driving out demons in Your name, and we forbade him to do it, because he is not one of our band.

39 B ut Jesus said, Forbid him not: for there is no man which shall do a miracle in my name, that can lightly speak evil of me.

But Jesus said, Do not restrain or hinder or forbid him; for no one who does a mighty work in My name will soon afterward be able to speak evil of Me.

40 F or he that is not against us is on our part.

For he who is not against us is for us.

41 F or whosoever shall give you a cup of water to drink in my name, because ye belong to Christ, verily I say unto you, he shall not lose his reward.

For I tell you truly, whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because you belong to and bear the name of Christ will by no means fail to get his reward.

42 A nd whosoever shall offend one of these little ones that believe in me, it is better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he were cast into the sea.

And whoever causes one of these little ones (these believers) who acknowledge and cleave to Me to stumble and sin, it would be better (more profitable and wholesome) for him if a millstone were hung about his neck, and he were thrown into the sea.

43 A nd if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:

And if your hand puts a stumbling block before you and causes you to sin, cut it off! It is more profitable and wholesome for you to go into life '> that is really worthwhile] maimed than with two hands to go to hell (Gehenna),

44 w here their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.

Where their worm does not die, and the fire is not put out.

45 A nd if thy foot offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter halt into life, than having two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:

And if your foot is a cause of stumbling and sin to you, cut it off! It is more profitable and wholesome for you to enter into life crippled than, having two feet, to be cast into hell (Gehenna).

46 w here their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.

Where their worm does not die, and the fire is not put out.

47 A nd if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out: it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire:

And if your eye causes you to stumble and sin, pluck it out! It is more profitable and wholesome for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into hell (Gehenna),

48 w here their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.

Where their worm '> which preys on the inhabitants and is a symbol of the wounds inflicted on the man himself by his sins] does not die, and the fire is not put out.

49 F or every one shall be salted with fire, and every sacrifice shall be salted with salt.

For everyone shall be salted with fire.

50 S alt is good: but if the salt have lost his saltness, wherewith will ye season it? Have salt in yourselves, and have peace one with another.

Salt is good (beneficial), but if salt has lost its saltness, how will you restore it? Have salt within yourselves, and be at peace and live in harmony with one another.
