1 N ow before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end.

before the Passover Feast began, Jesus knew (was fully aware) that the time had come for Him to leave this world and return to the Father. And as He had loved those who were His own in the world, He loved them to the last and to the highest degree.

2 A nd supper being ended, the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him;

So during supper, Satan having already put the thought of betraying Jesus in the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son,

3 J esus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God;

Jesus, knowing (fully aware) that the Father had put everything into His hands, and that He had come from God and was returning to God,

4 h e riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself.

Got up from supper, took off His garments, and taking a towel, He fastened it around His waist.

5 A fter that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.

Then He poured water into the washbasin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded.

6 T hen cometh he to Simon Peter: and Peter saith unto him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet?

When He came to Simon Peter, said to Him, Lord, are my feet to be washed by You?

7 J esus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter.

Jesus said to him, You do not understand now what I am doing, but you will understand later on.

8 P eter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me.

Peter said to Him, You shall never wash my feet! Jesus answered him, Unless I wash you, you have no part with ( in) Me.

9 S imon Peter saith unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head.

Simon Peter said to Him, Lord, not only my feet, but my hands and my head too!

10 J esus saith to him, He that is washed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are clean, but not all.

Jesus said to him, Anyone who has bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is clean all over. And you are clean, but not all of you.

11 F or he knew who should betray him; therefore said he, Ye are not all clean.

For He knew who was going to betray Him; that was the reason He said, Not all of you are clean.

12 S o after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you?

So when He had finished washing their feet and had put on His garments and had sat down again, He said to them, Do you understand what I have done to you?

13 Y e call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am.

You call Me the Teacher (Master) and the Lord, and you are right in doing so, for that is what I am.

14 I f I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another’s feet.

If I then, your Lord and Teacher (Master), have washed your feet, you ought to wash one another’s feet.

15 F or I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.

For I have given you this as an example, so that you should do what I have done to you.

16 V erily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him.

I assure you, most solemnly I tell you, A servant is not greater than his master, and no one who is sent is superior to the one who sent him.

17 I f ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.

If you know these things, blessed and happy and to be envied are you if you practice them.

18 I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen: but that the scripture may be fulfilled, He that eateth bread with me hath lifted up his heel against me.

I am not speaking of and I do not mean all of you. I know whom I have chosen; but it is that the Scripture may be fulfilled, He who eats My bread with Me has raised up his heel against Me.

19 N ow I tell you before it come, that, when it is come to pass, ye may believe that I am he.

I tell you this now before it occurs, so that when it does take place you may be persuaded and believe that I am He.

20 V erily, verily, I say unto you, He that receiveth whomsoever I send receiveth me; and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.

I assure you, most solemnly I tell you, he who receives and welcomes and takes into his heart any messenger of Mine receives Me; and he who receives and welcomes and takes Me into his heart receives Him Who sent Me.

21 W hen Jesus had thus said, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me.

After Jesus had said these things, He was troubled (disturbed, agitated) in spirit and said, I assure you, most solemnly I tell you, one of you will deliver Me up!

22 T hen the disciples looked one on another, doubting of whom he spake.

The disciples kept looking at one another, puzzled as to whom He could mean.

23 N ow there was leaning on Jesus’ bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved.

One of His disciples, whom Jesus loved, was reclining on Jesus’ bosom.

24 S imon Peter therefore beckoned to him, that he should ask who it should be of whom he spake.

So Simon Peter motioned to him to ask of whom He was speaking.

25 H e then lying on Jesus’ breast saith unto him, Lord, who is it?

Then leaning back against Jesus’ breast, he asked Him, Lord, who is it?

26 J esus answered, He it is, to whom I shall give a sop, when I have dipped it. And when he had dipped the sop, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon.

Jesus answered, It is the one to whom I am going to give this morsel (bit) of food after I have dipped it. So when He had dipped the morsel of bread, He gave it to Judas, Simon Iscariot’s son.

27 A nd after the sop Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him, That thou doest, do quickly.

Then after the bit of food, Satan entered into and took possession of. Jesus said to him, What you are going to do, do more swiftly than you seem to intend and make quick work of it.

28 N ow no man at the table knew for what intent he spake this unto him.

But nobody reclining at the table knew why He spoke to him or what He meant by telling him this.

29 F or some of them thought, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus had said unto him, Buy those things that we have need of against the feast; or, that he should give something to the poor.

Some thought that, since Judas had the money box (the purse), Jesus was telling him, Buy what we need for the Festival, or that he should give something to the poor.

30 H e then having received the sop went immediately out: and it was night.

So after receiving the bit of bread, he went out immediately. And it was night.

31 T herefore, when he was gone out, Jesus said, Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him.

When he had left, Jesus said, Now is the Son of Man glorified! And God has been glorified through and in Him.

32 I f God be glorified in him, God shall also glorify him in himself, and shall straightway glorify him.

And if God is glorified through and in Him, God will also glorify Him in Himself, and He will glorify Him at once and not delay.

33 L ittle children, yet a little while I am with you. Ye shall seek me: and as I said unto the Jews, Whither I go, ye cannot come; so now I say to you.

little children, I am to be with you only a little longer. You will look for Me and, as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: you are not able to come where I am going.

34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.

I give you a new commandment: that you should love one another. Just as I have loved you, so you too should love one another.

35 B y this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

By this shall all know that you are My disciples, if you love one another.

36 S imon Peter said unto him, Lord, whither goest thou? Jesus answered him, Whither I go, thou canst not follow me now; but thou shalt follow me afterwards.

Simon Peter said to Him, Lord, where are You going? Jesus answered, You are not able to follow Me now where I am going, but you shall follow Me afterwards.

37 P eter said unto him, Lord, why cannot I follow thee now? I will lay down my life for thy sake.

Peter said to Him, Lord, why cannot I follow You now? I will lay down my life for You.

38 J esus answered him, Wilt thou lay down thy life for my sake? Verily, verily, I say unto thee, The cock shall not crow, till thou hast denied me thrice.

Jesus answered, Will you lay down your life for Me? I assure you, most solemnly I tell you, before a rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.
