1 T his is what the Lord God showed me: There was a basket of summer fruit.
Thus did Jehovah shew unto me; and behold, a basket of summer-fruit.
2 A nd the Lord said, “What do you see, Amos?” I said, “A basket of summer fruit.” Then the Lord said to me, “The end has come for My people Israel. I will not change My mind again about punishing them.
And he said, Amos, what seest thou? And I said, A basket of summer-fruit. And Jehovah said unto me, The end is come upon my people Israel: I will not again pass by them any more.
3 T he songs of the king’s house will become loud cries of sorrow on that day,” says the Lord God. “There will be many dead bodies. In every place they will be thrown out without a word.”
And the songs of the palace shall be howlings in that day, saith the Lord Jehovah. The dead bodies shall be many; in every place they shall be cast forth. Silence!
4 H ear this, you who crush under foot those who are in need, to put an end to the poor of the land.
Hear this, ye that pant after the needy, even to cause to fail the poor of the land,
5 Y ou say, “When will the New Moon be over, so that we may buy grain? When will the Day of Rest be over, so that we may open the store and sell grain? Then we will make the basket smaller and the weight bigger, and we will lie about the weight.
saying, When will the new moon be gone, that we may sell corn? and the sabbath, that we may set forth wheat? making the ephah small and the shekel great, and falsifying the balances for deceit:
6 W e will buy the poor for money, and those in need for shoes. And we will sell the part of the grain that is of no worth.”
that we may buy the poor for silver, and the needy for a pair of shoes; and that we may sell the refuse of the wheat.
7 T he Lord has promised by the pride of Jacob, “For sure I will never forget anything they have done.
Jehovah hath sworn by the glory of Jacob, Certainly I will never forget any of their works.
8 W ill not the land shake because of this? Will not everyone who lives in it be filled with sorrow? All of it will rise up like the Nile. It will be troubled, and will fall like the Nile River of Egypt.
Shall not the land tremble for this, and every one mourn that dwelleth therein? And it shall wholly rise up like the Nile; and it shall surge and sink down, as the river of Egypt.
9 O n that day,” says the Lord God, “I will make the sun go down at noon. I will make the earth dark in the daytime.
And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the Lord Jehovah, that I will cause the sun to go down at noon, and I will darken the land in the clear day.
10 I will turn your special suppers into times of sorrow, and all your songs into songs of sorrow. I will make all of you wear cloth made from hair, and cut all the hair from your heads. I will fill that time with sorrow, as if an only son had died. And the end of it will be like a bitter day.
And I will turn your feasts into mourning, and all your songs into lamentation; and I will bring up sackcloth upon all loins, and baldness upon every head; and I will make it as the mourning for an only, and the end thereof as a bitter day.
11 “ The days are coming,” says the Lord God, “when I will send a time upon the land when the people will be very hungry. They will not be hungry for bread or thirsty for water, but they will be hungry to hear the Words of the Lord.
Behold, days come, saith the Lord Jehovah, when I will send a famine in the land; not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of Jehovah.
12 P eople will go from sea to sea, and from the north to the east. They will go from place to place to look for the Word of the Lord, but they will not find it.
And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north to the east; they shall run to and fro to seek the word of Jehovah, and shall not find it.
13 O n that day the beautiful, pure, young women and the young men will lose their strength and fall because of thirst.
In that day shall the fair virgins and the young men faint for thirst;
14 A s for those who swear by the false gods of Samaria, saying, ‘As your god lives, O Dan,’ and ‘As the way of Beersheba lives,’ they will fall and never rise again.”
they that swear by the sin of Samaria, and say, thy god, O Dan, liveth! and, the way of Beer-sheba liveth! even they shall fall, and never rise up again.
