1 N ow it came about in those days, when there was no king in Israel, that there was a certain Levite staying in the remote part of the hill country of Ephraim, who took a concubine for himself from Bethlehem in Judah.

Nhằm lúc không có vua trong Y-sơ-ra-ên, có một người Lê-vi đến kiều ngụ nơi góc xa hơn hết của núi E

2 B ut his concubine played the harlot against him, and she went away from him to her father’s house in Bethlehem in Judah, and was there for a period of four months.

Vợ bé người hành dâm, bỏ người, đi về nhà cha mình tại Bết-lê-hem trong xứ Giu-đa, và ở đó bốn tháng.

3 T hen her husband arose and went after her to speak tenderly to her in order to bring her back, taking with him his servant and a pair of donkeys. So she brought him into her father’s house, and when the girl’s father saw him, he was glad to meet him.

Chồng nàng chổi dậy, đi theo nàng, muốn lấy lời ngọt cảm lòng nàng, đặng dẫn nàng về nhà mình. Người có đem theo một đầy tớ và hai con lừa. Nàng mời người vào nhà cha mình. Cha nàng thấy người đến, ra đón rước cách vui mừng.

4 H is father-in-law, the girl’s father, detained him; and he remained with him three days. So they ate and drank and lodged there.

5 N ow on the fourth day they got up early in the morning, and he prepared to go; and the girl’s father said to his son-in-law, “ Sustain yourself with a piece of bread, and afterward you may go.”

Ngày thứ tư, họ dậy sớm, và khi người Lê-vi sửa soạn đi ra, cha của người đờn bà trẻ bèn nói cùng rể mình rằng: Hãy dùng một miếng bánh đặng đỡ lòng con, rồi sau các ngươi sẽ đi.

6 S o both of them sat down and ate and drank together; and the girl’s father said to the man, “Please be willing to spend the night, and let your heart be merry.”

Vậy, vợ chồng ngồi ăn uống cùng nhau. Cha của người đờn bà trẻ nói cùng người chồng rằng: Con hãy định ở lại đêm nay nữa, cho lòng con vui mừng!

7 T hen the man arose to go, but his father-in-law urged him so that he spent the night there again.

Người Lê-vi dậy sớm đặng đi, nhưng ông gia ép nài quá, đến đỗi người trở lại, và ở đêm đó nữa.

8 O n the fifth day he arose to go early in the morning, and the girl’s father said, “Please sustain yourself, and wait until afternoon”; so both of them ate.

Ngày thứ năm, người dậy sớm đặng ra đi, thì cha người đờn bà trẻ nói cùng người rằng: Xin con hãy dùng bữa, nán ở lại cho đến xế chiều. Rồi vợ chồng ngồi lại ăn.

9 W hen the man arose to go along with his concubine and servant, his father-in-law, the girl’s father, said to him, “Behold now, the day has drawn to a close; please spend the night. Lo, the day is coming to an end; spend the night here that your heart may be merry. Then tomorrow you may arise early for your journey so that you may go home.”

Đoạn, người Lê-vi đứng dậy đặng đi cùng vợ bé và tôi tớ mình; nhưng ông gia, là cha của người đờn bà trẻ, nói rằng: Nầy, ngày đã xế, chiều hầu gần, cha xin hai con hãy ở lại đây. Ngày đã xế, hãy ở đêm lại đây, cho lòng con vui mừng. Ngày mai, hai con sẽ thức dậy sớm, đặng lên đường, và trở về nhà con.

10 B ut the man was not willing to spend the night, so he arose and departed and came to a place opposite Jebus (that is, Jerusalem). And there were with him a pair of saddled donkeys; his concubine also was with him.

Nhưng người chồng không muốn ở đêm, bèn đứng dậy và đi. Người đến tại trước Giê-bu, tức Giê-ru-sa-lem, với hai con lừa thắng; cũng có vợ bé theo người.

11 W hen they were near Jebus, the day was almost gone; and the servant said to his master, “Please come, and let us turn aside into this city of the Jebusites and spend the night in it.”

Khi hai người đến gần Giê-bu, ngày đã xế chiều rồi. Kẻ tôi tớ thưa cùng chủ rằng: Hè, chúng ta hãy xây qua đặng vào trong thành Giê-bu nầy, và ngủ đêm tại đó.

12 H owever, his master said to him, “We will not turn aside into the city of foreigners who are not of the sons of Israel; but we will go on as far as Gibeah.”

Chủ đáp rằng: Chúng ta không vào trong một thành kẻ ngoại bang, là nơi chẳng có người Y-sơ-ra-ên; chúng ta sẽ đi đến Ghi-bê -a.

13 H e said to his servant, “Come and let us approach one of these places; and we will spend the night in Gibeah or Ramah.”

Người lại nói cùng kẻ đầy tớ rằng: Hè, ta hãy rán đi đến một nơi nào ở đằng trước, hoặc Ghi-bê -a hay là Ra-ma, đặng ngủ đêm tại đó.

14 S o they passed along and went their way, and the sun set on them near Gibeah which belongs to Benjamin.

Vậy, chúng cứ đi đường; khi đến gần Ghi-bê -a, là thành thuộc về Bên-gia-min, thì mặt trời lặn rồi.

15 T hey turned aside there in order to enter and lodge in Gibeah. When they entered, they sat down in the open square of the city, for no one took them into his house to spend the night.

Chúng bèn quẹo vào thành Ghi-bê -a đặng ngủ đêm tại đó. Vậy, chúng đi vào, ngồi tại ngoài phố chợ của thành; vì không ai tiếp vào nhà mình đặng cho ở ban đêm.

16 T hen behold, an old man was coming out of the field from his work at evening. Now the man was from the hill country of Ephraim, and he was staying in Gibeah, but the men of the place were Benjamites.

Vả, có một người già làm việc ở ngoài đồng, buổi chiều trở về. Người ấy vốn quê ở núi E

17 A nd he lifted up his eyes and saw the traveler in the open square of the city; and the old man said, “Where are you going, and where do you come from?”

Người già ngước mắt lên, thấy kẻ hành khách nầy trên phố chợ của thành, bèn hỏi rằng: Ngươi ở đâu đến và đi đâu?

18 H e said to him, “We are passing from Bethlehem in Judah to the remote part of the hill country of Ephraim, for I am from there, and I went to Bethlehem in Judah. But I am now going to my house, and no man will take me into his house.

Người hành khách đáp rằng: Chúng tôi đến từ Bết-lê-hem ở xứ Giu-đa, đương đi về nơi góc xa của núi E

19 Y et there is both straw and fodder for our donkeys, and also bread and wine for me, your maidservant, and the young man who is with your servants; there is no lack of anything.”

Vả lại, chúng tôi có rơm và cỏ cho lừa chúng tôi, rượu và bánh cho tôi, cho con đòi và cho người trai trẻ đi theo kẻ tôi tớ ông. Chẳng thiếu gì cho chúng tôi cả.

20 T he old man said, “ Peace to you. Only let me take care of all your needs; however, do not spend the night in the open square.”

Nguời già nói: Bình an cho ngươi! Ta lãnh lo liệu mọi điều ngươi có cần dùng; ngươi sẽ chẳng ngủ đêm tại phố chợ đâu.

21 S o he took him into his house and gave the donkeys fodder, and they washed their feet and ate and drank.

Người già bèn mời người vào nhà, và cho lừa ăn; các hành khách rửa chơn, rồi ăn và uống.

22 W hile they were celebrating, behold, the men of the city, certain worthless fellows, surrounded the house, pounding the door; and they spoke to the owner of the house, the old man, saying, “Bring out the man who came into your house that we may have relations with him.”

Khi chúng đương ăn vui vẻ, có những người trong thành, là kẻ gian tà, vây nhà, động cửa và nói cùng ông già, là chủ nhà, rằng: Hãy đem người đã vào nhà ngươi đó ra, cho chúng ta biết hắn.

23 T hen the man, the owner of the house, went out to them and said to them, “No, my fellows, please do not act so wickedly; since this man has come into my house, do not commit this act of folly.

Chủ nhà ra đến cùng chúng, mà rằng: Hỡi anh em, đừng, xin chớ làm điều ác; vì người nầy đã vào nhà tôi, chớ phạm sự sỉ nhục nầy.

24 H ere is my virgin daughter and his concubine. Please let me bring them out that you may ravish them and do to them whatever you wish. But do not commit such an act of folly against this man.”

Kìa, con gái ta còn đồng trinh, và vợ bé người kia; ta sẽ dẫn chúng nó ra ngoài cho anh em, anh em sẽ lăng nhục họ, đãi họ tùy ý thích anh em; nhưng với người nầy, chớ phạm điều sỉ nhục dường ấy.

25 B ut the men would not listen to him. So the man seized his concubine and brought her out to them; and they raped her and abused her all night until morning, then let her go at the approach of dawn.

Song những kẻ đó không khứng nghe người. Người khách bèn bắt vợ bé người dẫn ra ngoài cho chúng, chúng biết nàng, lăng nhục nàng trọn đêm cho đến sáng; rồi đuổi nàng về rạng đông.

26 A s the day began to dawn, the woman came and fell down at the doorway of the man’s house where her master was, until full daylight.

Gần sáng, người đờn bà đến ngã tại cửa nhà chồng nàng trọ, và nằm tại đó cho đến sáng ngày.

27 W hen her master arose in the morning and opened the doors of the house and went out to go on his way, then behold, his concubine was lying at the doorway of the house with her hands on the threshold.

Sáng đến, chồng nàng chổi dậy, mở cửa nhà ra, đặng lên đường mình; kìa, thấy vợ bé mình nằm sải trước cửa nhà, hai tay ở trên ngạch.

28 H e said to her, “Get up and let us go,” but there was no answer. Then he placed her on the donkey; and the man arose and went to his home.

Người nói cùng nàng rằng: Hãy đứng dậy, chúng ta sẽ đi. Song nàng chẳng trả lời. Người bèn để nàng trên lừa mình, lên đường và trở về nhà.

29 W hen he entered his house, he took a knife and laid hold of his concubine and cut her in twelve pieces, limb by limb, and sent her throughout the territory of Israel.

Đến nhà rồi, người lấy một con dao, nắm vợ bé mình, chặt từng tay từng chơn ra mười hai đoạn, gởi đi khắp địa phận Y-sơ-ra-ên.

30 A ll who saw it said, “Nothing like this has ever happened or been seen from the day when the sons of Israel came up from the land of Egypt to this day. Consider it, take counsel and speak up!”

Hết thảy ai thấy sự đó, đều nói rằng: Từ khi dân Y-sơ-ra-ên ra khỏi xứ Ê-díp-tô cho đến ngày nay, người ta chưa hề làm hoặc thấy việc như vậy! Khá nghĩ đến điều đó, bàn luận nhau, và giảng ý ra.
