1 N ow Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword.

A-háp thuật lại cho Giê-sa-bên mọi điều Ê-li đã làm, và người đã dùng gươm giết hết thảy tiên tri Ba-anh làm sao.

2 T hen Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, “ So may the gods do to me and even more, if I do not make your life as the life of one of them by tomorrow about this time.”

Giê-sa-bên sai một sứ giả đến Ê-li mà nói rằng: Nếu ngày mai trong giờ này, ta không xử mạng sống ngươi như mạng sống của một người trong chúng nó, nguyện các thần đãi ta cách nặng nề.

3 A nd he was afraid and arose and ran for his life and came to Beersheba, which belongs to Judah, and left his servant there.

Vì vậy, Ê-li sợ hãi, đứng dậy chạy đi đặng cứu mạng sống mình. Đến tại Bê -e-Sê-ba, thuộc về Giu-đa, người để tôi tớ mình lại đó.

4 B ut he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree; and he requested for himself that he might die, and said, “It is enough; now, O Lord, take my life, for I am not better than my fathers.”

Còn người vào đồng vắng, đường đi ước một ngày, đến ngồi dưới cây giếng giêng, xin chết mà rằng: Ôi Đức Giê-hô-va! đã đủ rồi. Hãy cất lấy mạng sống tôi, vì tôi không hơn gì các tổ phụ tôi.

5 H e lay down and slept under a juniper tree; and behold, there was an angel touching him, and he said to him, “Arise, eat.”

Đoạn, người nằm ngủ dưới cây giếng giêng. Có một thiên sứ đụng đến người và nói rằng: Hãy chổi dậy và ăn.

6 T hen he looked and behold, there was at his head a bread cake baked on hot stones, and a jar of water. So he ate and drank and lay down again.

Người nhìn thấy nơi đầu mình một cái bánh nhỏ nướng trên than, và một bình nước. Người ăn uống, rồi lại nằm.

7 T he angel of the Lord came again a second time and touched him and said, “Arise, eat, because the journey is too great for you.”

Thiên sứ của Đức Giê-hô-va đến lần thứ nhì, đụng người và nói rằng: Hãy chổi dậy và ăn, vì đường xa quá cho ngươi. Vậy người chổi dậy, ăn và uống,

8 S o he arose and ate and drank, and went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights to Horeb, the mountain of God. Elijah at Horeb

rồi nhờ sức của lương thực ấy, người đi bốn mươi ngày và bốn mươi đêm cho đến Hô-rếp, là núi của Đức Chúa Trời.

9 T hen he came there to a cave and lodged there; and behold, the word of the Lord came to him, and He said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

Đến nơi, người đi vào trong hang đá, ngủ đêm ở đó. Và kìa, có lời của Đức Giê-hô-va phán với người rằng: Hỡi Ê-li, ngươi ở đây làm chi?

10 H e said, “ I have been very zealous for the Lord, the God of hosts; for the sons of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, torn down Your altars and killed Your prophets with the sword. And I alone am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.”

Người thưa rằng: Tôi đã rất nóng nảy sốt sắng vì Giê-hô-va Đức Chúa Trời vạn quân; vì dân Y-sơ-ra-ên đã bội giao ước Ngài, phá hủy các bàn thờ Ngài, dùng gươm giết những tiên tri Ngài; chỉ một mình tôi còn lại, và họ cũng kiếm thế cất mạng sống tôi.

11 S o He said, “ Go forth and stand on the mountain before the Lord.” And behold, the Lord was passing by! And a great and strong wind was rending the mountains and breaking in pieces the rocks before the Lord; but the Lord was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake.

Đức Chúa Trời phán với người rằng: Hãy đi ra, đứng tại trên núi trước mặt Đức Giê-hô-va. Nầy Đức Giê-hô-va đi ngang qua, có một ngọn gió mạnh thổi dữ tợn trước mặt Ngài, xé núi ra, và làm tan nát các hòn đá; nhưng không có Đức Giê-hô-va trong trận gió. Sau trận gió có cơn động đất; nhưng không có Đức Giê-hô-va trong cơn động đất.

12 A fter the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a sound of a gentle blowing.

Sau cơn động đất có đám lửa; nhưng không có Đức Giê-hô-va trong đám lửa. Sau đám lửa, có một tiếng êm dịu nhỏ nhẹ.

13 W hen Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood in the entrance of the cave. And behold, a voice came to him and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

Khi Ê-li vừa nghe tiếng đó, thì lấy áo tơi bao phủ mặt mình, đi ra đứng tại nơi miệng hang; này có một tiếng phán với người rằng: Hỡi Ê-li, ngươi làm chi đây?

Người thưa rằng: Tôi rất nóng nảy sốt sắng vì Giê-hô-va Đức Chúa Trời vạn quân, vì dân Y-sơ-ra-ên đã bội giao ước của Ngài, phá hủy các bàn thờ Ngài, dùng gươm giết những tiên tri; chỉ một mình tôi còn lại, và họ cũng tìm cách cất mạng sống tôi.

15 T he Lord said to him, “Go, return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus, and when you have arrived, you shall anoint Hazael king over Aram;

Nhưng Đức Giê-hô đáp với người rằng: Hãy bắt con đường đồng vắng đi đến Đa-mách. Khi đến rồi, ngươi sẽ xức dầu cho Ha-xa-ên làm vua Sy-ri;

16 a nd Jehu the son of Nimshi you shall anoint king over Israel; and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah you shall anoint as prophet in your place.

ngươi cũng sẽ xức dầu cho Giê-hu, con trai của Nim-si, làm vua Y-sơ-ra-ên; và ngươi sẽ xức dầu cho Ê-li-sê, con trai Sa-phát, ở A-bên-Mê-hô-la, làm tiên tri thế cho ngươi.

17 I t shall come about, the one who escapes from the sword of Hazael, Jehu shall put to death, and the one who escapes from the sword of Jehu, Elisha shall put to death.

Ai thoát khỏi gươm của Ha-xa-ên sẽ bị Giê-hu giết; ai thoát khỏi gươm của Giê-hu sẽ bị Ê-li-sê giết.

18 Y et I will leave 7, 000 in Israel, all the knees that have not bowed to Baal and every mouth that has not kissed him.”

Nhưng ta đã để dành lại cho ta trong Y-sơ-ra-ên bảy ngàn người không có quì gối xuống trước mặt Ba-anh, và môi họ chưa hôn nó.

19 S o he departed from there and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, while he was plowing with twelve pairs of oxen before him, and he with the twelfth. And Elijah passed over to him and threw his mantle on him.

Từ đó, Ê-li đi, gặp Ê-li-sê, con trai của Sa-phát đương cày có mười hai đôi bò trước mặt mình, chính người cầm đôi thứ mười hai. Ê-li đi ngang qua người, ném áo choàng mình trên người.

20 H e left the oxen and ran after Elijah and said, “Please let me kiss my father and my mother, then I will follow you.” And he said to him, “Go back again, for what have I done to you?”

Ê-li-sê bèn bỏ bò mình, chạy theo Ê-li mà nói rằng: Xin cho phép tôi hôn cha và mẹ tôi đã, đoạn tôi sẽ theo ông. Ê-li đáp: Hãy đi và trở lại; vì ta nào có làm gì cho ngươi đâu.

21 S o he returned from following him, and took the pair of oxen and sacrificed them and boiled their flesh with the implements of the oxen, and gave it to the people and they ate. Then he arose and followed Elijah and ministered to him.

Ê-li-sê bèn lìa khỏi Ê-li trở về, bắt một đôi bò giết đi, và lấy cày làm củi mà nấu thịt nó, rồi cho các tôi tớ mình ăn. Đoạn, người đứng dậy, đi theo Ê-li, và hầu việc người.
