1 Corinthians 11 ~ 1 Corinthians 11

1 B e ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ.

Pattern yourselves after me, as I imitate and follow Christ (the Messiah).

2 N ow I praise you, brethren, that ye remember me in all things, and keep the ordinances, as I delivered them to you.

I appreciate and commend you because you always remember me in everything and keep firm possession of the traditions (the substance of my instructions), just as I have passed them on to you.

3 B ut I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.

But I want you to know and realize that Christ is the Head of every man, the head of a woman is her husband, and the Head of Christ is God.

4 E very man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonoureth his head.

Any man who prays or prophesies (teaches, refutes, reproves, admonishes, and comforts) with his head covered dishonors his Head (Christ).

5 B ut every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head: for that is even all one as if she were shaven.

And any woman who prays or prophesies (teaches, refutes, reproves, admonishes, or comforts) when she is bareheaded dishonors her head (her husband); it is the same as shaved.

6 F or if the woman be not covered, let her also be shorn: but if it be a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be covered.

For if a woman will not wear covering, then she should cut off her hair too; but if it is disgraceful for a woman to have her head shorn or shaven, let her cover.

7 F or a man indeed ought not to cover his head, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man.

For a man ought not to wear anything on his head, for he is the image and glory of God '> his function of government reflects the majesty of the divine Rule]; but woman is man’s glory (majesty, preeminence).

8 F or the man is not of the woman: but the woman of the man.

For man was not from woman, but woman from man;

9 N either was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man.

Neither was man created on account of or for the benefit of woman, but woman on account of and for the benefit of man.

10 F or this cause ought the woman to have power on her head because of the angels.

Therefore she should have a covering on her head '> that she may show reverence as do] the angels.

11 N evertheless neither is the man without the woman, neither the woman without the man, in the Lord.

Nevertheless, in the Lord and from His point of view woman is not apart from and independent of man, nor is man aloof from and independent of woman;

12 F or as the woman is of the man, even so is the man also by the woman; but all things of God.

For as woman was made from man, even so man is also born of woman; and all from God.

13 J udge in yourselves: is it comely that a woman pray unto God uncovered?

Consider for yourselves; is it proper and decent for a woman to offer prayer to God with her head uncovered?

14 D oth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him?

Does not the native sense of propriety (experience, common sense, reason) itself teach you that for a man to wear long hair is a dishonor to him,

15 B ut if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering.

But if a woman has long hair, it is her ornament and glory? For her hair is given to her for a covering.

16 B ut if any man seem to be contentious, we have no such custom, neither the churches of God.

Now if anyone is disposed to be argumentative and contentious about this, we hold to and recognize no other custom than this, nor do the churches of God generally.

17 N ow in this that I declare unto you I praise you not, that ye come together not for the better, but for the worse.

But in what I instruct next I do not commend, because when you meet together, it is not for the better but for the worse.

18 F or first of all, when ye come together in the church, I hear that there be divisions among you; and I partly believe it.

For in the first place, when you assemble as a congregation, I hear that there are cliques (divisions and factions) among you; and I in part believe it,

19 F or there must be also heresies among you, that they which are approved may be made manifest among you.

For doubtless there have to be factions or parties among you in order that they who are genuine and of approved fitness may become evident and plainly recognized among you.

20 W hen ye come together therefore into one place, this is not to eat the Lord's supper.

So when you gather for your meetings, it is not the supper instituted by the Lord that you eat,

21 F or in eating every one taketh before other his own supper: and one is hungry, and another is drunken.

For in eating each one to get his own supper first, and one goes hungry while another gets drunk.

22 W hat? have ye not houses to eat and to drink in? or despise ye the church of God, and shame them that have not? what shall I say to you? shall I praise you in this? I praise you not.

What! Do you have no houses in which to eat and drink? Or do you despise the church of God and mean to show contempt for it, while you humiliate those who are poor (have no homes and have brought no food)? What shall I say to you? Shall I commend you in this? No, I will not!

23 F or I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, that the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread:

For I received from the Lord Himself that which I passed on to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when He was treacherously delivered up and while His betrayal was in progress took bread,

24 A nd when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me.

And when He had given thanks, He broke and said, Take, eat. This is My body, which is broken for you. Do this to call Me to remembrance.

25 A fter the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, this cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.

Similarly when supper was ended, He took the cup also, saying, This cup is the new covenant in My blood. Do this, as often as you drink, to call Me to remembrance.

26 F or as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come.

For every time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you are representing and signifying and proclaiming the fact of the Lord’s death until He comes.

27 W herefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.

So then whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in a way that is unworthy will be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.

28 B ut let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup.

Let a man examine himself, and so should he eat of the bread and drink of the cup.

29 F or he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body.

For anyone who eats and drinks without discriminating and recognizing with due appreciation that body, eats and drinks a sentence (a verdict of judgment) upon himself.

30 F or this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep.

That is the reason many of you are weak and sickly, and quite enough of you have fallen into the sleep of death.

31 F or if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged.

For if we searchingly examined ourselves, we should not be judged and penalty decreed.

32 B ut when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world.

But when we are judged by the Lord, we are disciplined and chastened, so that we may not be condemned with the world.

33 W herefore, my brethren, when ye come together to eat, tarry one for another.

So then, my brothers, when you gather together to eat, wait for one another.

34 A nd if any man hunger, let him eat at home; that ye come not together unto condemnation. And the rest will I set in order when I come.

If anyone is hungry, let him eat at home, lest you come together to bring judgment. About the other matters, I will give you directions when I come.
