1 T hen we turned, and took our journey into the wilderness by the way of the Red sea, as the Lord spake unto me: and we compassed mount Seir many days.
Then we turned, and took our journey into the wilderness by the way of the Red Sea, as the Lord directed me; and for many days we journeyed around Mount Seir.
2 A nd the Lord spake unto me, saying,
And the Lord spoke to me, saying,
3 Y e have compassed this mountain long enough: turn you northward.
You have roamed around this mountain country long enough; turn northward.
4 A nd command thou the people, saying, Ye are to pass through the coast of your brethren the children of Esau, which dwell in Seir; and they shall be afraid of you: take ye good heed unto yourselves therefore:
And command the Israelites, You are to pass through the territory of your kinsmen the sons of Esau, who live in Seir; and they will be afraid of you. So watch yourselves carefully.
5 M eddle not with them; for I will not give you of their land, no, not so much as a foot breadth; because I have given mount Seir unto Esau for a possession.
Do not provoke or stir them up, for I will not give you of their land, no, not enough for the sole of your foot to tread on, for I have given Mount Seir to Esau for a possession.
6 Y e shall buy meat of them for money, that ye may eat; and ye shall also buy water of them for money, that ye may drink.
You shall buy food from them for money, that you may eat, and you shall also buy water from them for money, that you may drink.
7 F or the Lord thy God hath blessed thee in all the works of thy hand: he knoweth thy walking through this great wilderness: these forty years the Lord thy God hath been with thee; thou hast lacked nothing.
For the Lord your God has blessed you in all the work of your hand. He knows your walking through this great wilderness. These forty years the Lord your God has been with you; you have lacked nothing.
8 A nd when we passed by from our brethren the children of Esau, which dwelt in Seir, through the way of the plain from Elath, and from Eziongaber, we turned and passed by the way of the wilderness of Moab.
So we passed on from our brethren the sons of Esau, who dwelt in Seir, away from the Arabah (wilderness), and from Elath and from Ezion-geber. We turned and went by the way of the wilderness of Moab.
9 A nd the Lord said unto me, Distress not the Moabites, neither contend with them in battle: for I will not give thee of their land for a possession; because I have given Ar unto the children of Lot for a possession.
And the Lord said to me, Do not trouble or assault Moab or contend with them in battle, for I will not give you any of their land for a possession, because I have given Ar to the sons of Lot for a possession.
10 T he Emims dwelt therein in times past, a people great, and many, and tall, as the Anakims;
(The Emim dwelt there in times past, a people great and many, and tall as the Anakim.
11 W hich also were accounted giants, as the Anakims; but the Moabites called them Emims.
These also are known as Rephaim, as are the Anakim, but the Moabites call them Emim.
12 T he Horims also dwelt in Seir beforetime; but the children of Esau succeeded them, when they had destroyed them from before them, and dwelt in their stead; as Israel did unto the land of his possession, which the Lord gave unto them.
The Horites also formerly lived in Seir, but the sons of Esau dispossessed them and destroyed them from before them and dwelt in their stead, as Israel did to the land of their possession which the Lord gave to them.)
13 N ow rise up, said I, and get you over the brook Zered. And we went over the brook Zered.
Now rise up and go over the brook Zered. So we went over the brook Zered.
14 A nd the space in which we came from Kadeshbarnea, until we were come over the brook Zered, was thirty and eight years; until all the generation of the men of war were wasted out from among the host, as the Lord sware unto them.
And the time from our leaving Kadesh-barnea until we had come over the brook Zered was thirty-eight years, until the whole generation of the men of war had perished from the camp, as the Lord had sworn to them.
15 F or indeed the hand of the Lord was against them, to destroy them from among the host, until they were consumed.
Moreover the hand of the Lord was against them to exterminate them from the midst of the camp, until they were all gone.
16 S o it came to pass, when all the men of war were consumed and dead from among the people,
So when all the men of war had died from among the people,
17 T hat the Lord spake unto me, saying,
The Lord spoke to me, saying,
18 T hou art to pass over through Ar, the coast of Moab, this day:
You are this day to pass through Ar, the border of Moab.
19 A nd when thou comest nigh over against the children of Ammon, distress them not, nor meddle with them: for I will not give thee of the land of the children of Ammon any possession; because I have given it unto the children of Lot for a possession.
But when you come near the territory of the sons of Ammon, do not trouble or assault them or provoke or stir them up, for I will not give you any of the land of the Ammonites for a possession, because I have given it to the sons of Lot for a possession.
20 ( That also was accounted a land of giants: giants dwelt therein in old time; and the Ammonites call them Zamzummims;
(That also is known as a land of Rephaim; Rephaim dwelt there formerly, but the Ammonites call them Zamzummim,
21 A people great, and many, and tall, as the Anakims; but the Lord destroyed them before them; and they succeeded them, and dwelt in their stead:
A people great and many, and tall as the Anakim. But the Lord destroyed them before, and they dispossessed them and settled in their stead,
22 A s he did to the children of Esau, which dwelt in Seir, when he destroyed the Horims from before them; and they succeeded them, and dwelt in their stead even unto this day:
As He did for the sons of Esau, who dwell in Seir, when He destroyed the Horites from before them, and they dispossessed them and settled in their stead even to this day.
23 A nd the Avims which dwelt in Hazerim, even unto Azzah, the Caphtorims, which came forth out of Caphtor, destroyed them, and dwelt in their stead.)
As for the Avvim who dwelt in villages as far as Gaza, the Caphtorim who came from Caphtor destroyed them and dwelt in their stead.)
24 R ise ye up, take your journey, and pass over the river Arnon: behold, I have given into thine hand Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land: begin to possess it, and contend with him in battle.
Rise up, take your journey, and pass over the Valley of the Arnon. Behold, I have given into your hand Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land; begin to possess it and contend with him in battle.
25 T his day will I begin to put the dread of thee and the fear of thee upon the nations that are under the whole heaven, who shall hear report of thee, and shall tremble, and be in anguish because of thee.
This day will I begin to put the dread and fear of you upon the peoples who are under the whole heavens, who shall hear the report of you and shall tremble and be in anguish because of you.
26 A nd I sent messengers out of the wilderness of Kedemoth unto Sihon king of Heshbon with words of peace, saying,
So I sent messengers from the wilderness of Kedemoth to Sihon king of Heshbon with words of peace, saying,
27 L et me pass through thy land: I will go along by the high way, I will neither turn unto the right hand nor to the left.
Let me pass through your land. I will go only by the road, turning aside neither to the right nor to the left.
28 T hou shalt sell me meat for money, that I may eat; and give me water for money, that I may drink: only I will pass through on my feet;
You shall sell me food to eat and sell me water to drink; only let me walk through,
29 ( As the children of Esau which dwell in Seir, and the Moabites which dwell in Ar, did unto me;) until I shall pass over Jordan into the land which the Lord our God giveth us.
As the sons of Esau, who dwell in Seir, and the Moabites, who dwell in Ar, did for me, until I go over the Jordan into the land which the Lord our God gives us.
30 B ut Sihon king of Heshbon would not let us pass by him: for the Lord thy God hardened his spirit, and made his heart obstinate, that he might deliver him into thy hand, as appeareth this day.
But Sihon king of Heshbon would not let us pass by him; for the Lord your God hardened his spirit and made his heart obstinate, that He might give him into your hand, as at this day.
31 A nd the Lord said unto me, Behold, I have begun to give Sihon and his land before thee: begin to possess, that thou mayest inherit his land.
And the Lord said to me, Behold, I have begun to give Sihon and his land over to you. Begin to take possession, that you may succeed him and occupy his land.
32 T hen Sihon came out against us, he and all his people, to fight at Jahaz.
Then Sihon came out against us, he and all his people, to fight at Jahaz.
33 A nd the Lord our God delivered him before us; and we smote him, and his sons, and all his people.
And the Lord our God gave him over to us, and we defeated him and his sons and all his people.
34 A nd we took all his cities at that time, and utterly destroyed the men, and the women, and the little ones, of every city, we left none to remain:
At the same time we took all his cities and utterly destroyed every city—men, women, and children. We left none to remain.
35 O nly the cattle we took for a prey unto ourselves, and the spoil of the cities which we took.
Only the cattle we took as booty for ourselves and the spoil of the cities which we had captured.
36 F rom Aroer, which is by the brink of the river of Arnon, and from the city that is by the river, even unto Gilead, there was not one city too strong for us: the Lord our God delivered all unto us:
From Aroer, which is on the edge of the Arnon Valley, and from the city that is in the valley, as far as Gilead, there was no city too high and strong for us; the Lord our God delivered all to us.
37 O nly unto the land of the children of Ammon thou camest not, nor unto any place of the river Jabbok, nor unto the cities in the mountains, nor unto whatsoever the Lord our God forbad us.
Only you did not go near the land of the Ammonites, that is, to any bank of the river Jabbok and the cities of the hill country, and wherever the Lord our God had forbidden us.
