1 A nd he looked up, and saw the rich men casting their gifts into the treasury.

Looking up, saw the rich people putting their gifts into the treasury.

2 A nd he saw also a certain poor widow casting in thither two mites.

And He saw also a poor widow putting in two mites (copper coins).

3 A nd he said, Of a truth I say unto you, that this poor widow hath cast in more than they all:

And He said, Truly I say to you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them;

4 F or all these have of their abundance cast in unto the offerings of God: but she of her penury hath cast in all the living that she had.

For they all gave out of their abundance (their surplus); but she has contributed out of her lack and her want, putting in all that she had on which to live.

5 A nd as some spake of the temple, how it was adorned with goodly stones and gifts, he said,

And as some were saying of the temple that it was decorated with handsome (shapely and magnificent) stones and consecrated offerings '> laid up to be kept], He said,

6 A s for these things which ye behold, the days will come, in the which there shall not be left one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.

As for all this that you look at, the time will come when there shall not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.

7 A nd they asked him, saying, Master, but when shall these things be? and what sign will there be when these things shall come to pass?

And they asked Him, Teacher, when will this happen? And what sign will there be when this is about to occur?

8 A nd he said, Take heed that ye be not deceived: for many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and the time draweth near: go ye not therefore after them.

And He said, Be on your guard and be careful that you are not led astray; for many will come in My name '> appropriating to themselves the name Messiah which belongs to Me], saying, I am He! and, The time is at hand! Do not go out after them.

9 B ut when ye shall hear of wars and commotions, be not terrified: for these things must first come to pass; but the end is not by and by.

And when you hear of wars and insurrections (disturbances, disorder, and confusion), do not become alarmed and panic-stricken and terrified; for all this must take place first, but the end will not immediately.

10 T hen said he unto them, Nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom:

Then He told them, Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.

11 A nd great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and pestilences; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven.

There will be mighty and violent earthquakes, and in various places famines and pestilences (plagues: malignant and contagious or infectious epidemic diseases which are deadly and devastating); and there will be sights of terror and great signs from heaven.

12 B ut before all these, they shall lay their hands on you, and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues, and into prisons, being brought before kings and rulers for my name's sake.

But previous to all this, they will lay their hands on you and persecute you, turning you over to the synagogues and prisons, and you will be led away before kings and governors for My name’s sake.

13 A nd it shall turn to you for a testimony.

This will be a time (an opportunity) for you to bear testimony.

14 S ettle it therefore in your hearts, not to meditate before what ye shall answer:

Resolve and settle it in your minds not to meditate and prepare beforehand how you are to make your defense and how you will answer.

15 F or I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which all your adversaries shall not be able to gainsay nor resist.

For I will give you a mouth and such utterance and wisdom that all of your foes combined will be unable to stand against or refute.

16 A nd ye shall be betrayed both by parents, and brethren, and kinsfolks, and friends; and some of you shall they cause to be put to death.

You will be delivered up and betrayed even by parents and brothers and relatives and friends, and of you they will put to death.

17 A nd ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake.

And you will be hated (despised) by everyone because My name and for its sake.

18 B ut there shall not an hair of your head perish.

But not a hair of your head shall perish.

19 I n your patience possess ye your souls.

By your steadfastness and patient endurance you shall win the true life of your souls.

20 A nd when ye shall see Jerusalem compassed with armies, then know that the desolation thereof is nigh.

But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know and understand that its desolation has come near.

21 T hen let them which are in Judaea flee to the mountains; and let them which are in the midst of it depart out; and let not them that are in the countries enter thereinto.

Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, and let those who are inside get out of it, and let not those who are out in the country come into it;

22 F or these be the days of vengeance, that all things which are written may be fulfilled.

For those are days of vengeance, that all things that are written may be fulfilled.

23 B ut woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck, in those days! for there shall be great distress in the land, and wrath upon this people.

Alas for those who are pregnant and for those who have babies which they are nursing in those days! For great misery and anguish and distress shall be upon the land and indignation and punishment and retribution upon this people.

24 A nd they shall fall by the edge of the sword, and shall be led away captive into all nations: and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled.

They will fall by the mouth and the edge of the sword and will be led away as captives to and among all nations; and Jerusalem will be trodden down by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled (completed).

25 A nd there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring;

And there will be signs in the sun and moon and stars; and upon the earth distress (trouble and anguish) of nations in bewilderment and perplexity '> without resources, left wanting, embarrassed, in doubt, not knowing which way to turn] at the roaring ( the echo) of the tossing of the sea,

26 M en's hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken.

Men swooning away or expiring with fear and dread and apprehension and expectation of the things that are coming on the world; for the powers of the heavens will be shaken and caused to totter.

27 A nd then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.

And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with great (transcendent and overwhelming) power and glory (majesty and splendor).

28 A nd when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.

Now when these things begin to occur, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption (deliverance) is drawing near.

29 A nd he spake to them a parable; Behold the fig tree, and all the trees;

And He told them a parable: Look at the fig tree and all the trees;

30 W hen they now shoot forth, ye see and know of your own selves that summer is now nigh at hand.

When they put forth their buds and come out in leaf, you see for yourselves and perceive and know that summer is already near.

31 S o likewise ye, when ye see these things come to pass, know ye that the kingdom of God is nigh at hand.

Even so, when you see these things taking place, understand and know that the kingdom of God is at hand.

32 V erily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass away, till all be fulfilled.

Truly I tell you, this generation ( those living at that definite period of time) will not perish and pass away until all has taken place.

33 H eaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away.

The sky and the earth ( the universe, the world) will pass away, but My words will not pass away.

34 A nd take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares.

But take heed to yourselves and be on your guard, lest your hearts be overburdened and depressed (weighed down) with the giddiness and headache and nausea of self-indulgence, drunkenness, and worldly worries and cares pertaining to '> business of] this life, and that day come upon you suddenly like a trap or a noose;

35 F or as a snare shall it come on all them that dwell on the face of the whole earth.

For it will come upon all who live upon the face of the entire earth.

36 W atch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.

Keep awake then and watch at all times, praying that you may have the full strength and ability and be accounted worthy to escape all these things that will take place, and to stand in the presence of the Son of Man.

37 A nd in the day time he was teaching in the temple; and at night he went out, and abode in the mount that is called the mount of Olives.

Now in the daytime Jesus was teaching in '> the porches and courts of] the temple, but at night He would go out and stay on the mount called Olivet.

38 A nd all the people came early in the morning to him in the temple, for to hear him.

And early in the morning all the people came to Him in the temple '> porches or courts] to listen to Him.
