1 A nd Abraham departed thence towards the south country, and dwelt between Kadesh and Shur, and sojourned at Gerar.

Now Abraham journeyed from there toward the land of the Negev, and settled between Kadesh and Shur; then he sojourned in Gerar.

2 A nd Abraham said of Sarah his wife, She is my sister. And Abimelech the king of Gerar sent and took Sarah.

Abraham said of Sarah his wife, “ She is my sister.” So Abimelech king of Gerar sent and took Sarah.

3 B ut God came to Abimelech in a dream by night, and said to him, Behold, thou art a dead man, because of the woman that thou hast taken; for she is a man's wife.

But God came to Abimelech in a dream of the night, and said to him, “Behold, you are a dead man because of the woman whom you have taken, for she is married.”

4 B ut Abimelech had not come near her. And he said, Lord, wilt thou also kill a righteous nation?

Now Abimelech had not come near her; and he said, “Lord, will You slay a nation, even though blameless?

5 D id he not say to me, She is my sister? and she, even she said, He is my brother. In the integrity of my heart and in the innocency of my hands have I done this.

Did he not himself say to me, ‘She is my sister’? And she herself said, ‘He is my brother.’ In the integrity of my heart and the innocence of my hands I have done this.”

6 A nd God said to him in a dream, I also knew that thou didst this in the integrity of thy heart, and I, too, have withheld thee from sinning against me: therefore have I not suffered thee to touch her.

Then God said to him in the dream, “Yes, I know that in the integrity of your heart you have done this, and I also kept you from sinning against Me; therefore I did not let you touch her.

7 A nd now, restore the man's wife; for he is a prophet, and will pray for thee, that thou mayest live. And if thou do not restore, know that thou shalt certainly die, thou and all that is thine.

Now therefore, restore the man’s wife, for he is a prophet, and he will pray for you and you will live. But if you do not restore her, know that you shall surely die, you and all who are yours.”

8 A nd Abimelech rose early in the morning, and called all his servants, and spoke all these words in their ears; and the men were greatly afraid.

So Abimelech arose early in the morning and called all his servants and told all these things in their hearing; and the men were greatly frightened.

9 A nd Abimelech called Abraham and said to him, What hast thou done to us? And in what have I sinned against thee, that thou hast brought on me, and on my kingdom, a great sin? Thou hast done to me deeds that ought not to be done.

Then Abimelech called Abraham and said to him, “What have you done to us? And how have I sinned against you, that you have brought on me and on my kingdom a great sin? You have done to me things that ought not to be done.”

10 A nd Abimelech said to Abraham, What hast thou seen that thou hast done this?

And Abimelech said to Abraham, “What have you encountered, that you have done this thing?”

11 A nd Abraham said, Because I said, Surely the fear of God is not in this place, and they will kill me for my wife's sake.

Abraham said, “Because I thought, surely there is no fear of God in this place, and they will kill me because of my wife.

12 B ut she is also truly my sister, the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother; and she became my wife.

Besides, she actually is my sister, the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother, and she became my wife;

13 A nd it came to pass when God caused me to wander from my father's house, that I said to her, Let this be thy kindness which thou shalt shew to me: at every place whither we shall come, say of me, He is my brother.

and it came about, when God caused me to wander from my father’s house, that I said to her, ‘This is the kindness which you will show to me: everywhere we go, say of me, “He is my brother.”’”

14 A nd Abimelech took sheep and oxen, and bondmen and bondwomen, and gave to Abraham, and restored him Sarah his wife.

Abimelech then took sheep and oxen and male and female servants, and gave them to Abraham, and restored his wife Sarah to him.

15 A nd Abimelech said, Behold, my land is before thee: dwell where it is good in thine eyes.

Abimelech said, “ Behold, my land is before you; settle wherever you please.”

16 A nd to Sarah he said, Behold, I have given thy brother a thousand of silver; behold, let that be to thee a covering of the eyes, in respect of all that are with thee, and with all; and she was reproved.

To Sarah he said, “Behold, I have given your brother a thousand pieces of silver; behold, it is your vindication before all who are with you, and before all men you are cleared.”

17 A nd Abraham prayed to God, and God healed Abimelech, and his wife and his handmaids, and they bore.

Abraham prayed to God, and God healed Abimelech and his wife and his maids, so that they bore children.

18 F or Jehovah had fast closed up all the wombs of the house of Abimelech because of Sarah Abraham's wife.

For the Lord had closed fast all the wombs of the household of Abimelech because of Sarah, Abraham’s wife.
