1 O h, that thou wouldest rend the heavens, that thou wouldest come down,—that the mountains might flow down at thy presence,

Oh, that You would rend the heavens and come down, That the mountains might quake at Your presence—

2 as fire kindleth brushwood, as the fire causeth water to boil, to make thy name known to thine adversaries, that the nations might tremble at thy presence!

As fire kindles the brushwood, as fire causes water to boil— To make Your name known to Your adversaries, That the nations may tremble at Your presence!

3 W hen thou didst terrible things we looked not for, thou camest down, and the mountains flowed down at thy presence.

When You did awesome things which we did not expect, You came down, the mountains quaked at Your presence.

4 N ever have heard, nor perceived by the ear, nor hath eye seen a God beside thee, who acteth for him that waiteth for him.

For from days of old they have not heard or perceived by ear, Nor has the eye seen a God besides You, Who acts in behalf of the one who waits for Him.

5 T hou meetest him that rejoiceth to do righteousness, those that remember thee in thy ways: (behold, thou wast wroth, and we have sinned:) in those is perpetuity, and we shall be saved.

You meet him who rejoices in doing righteousness, Who remembers You in Your ways. Behold, You were angry, for we sinned, We continued in them a long time; And shall we be saved?

6 A nd we are all become as an unclean, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all fade as a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, have carried us away;

For all of us have become like one who is unclean, And all our righteous deeds are like a filthy garment; And all of us wither like a leaf, And our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.

7 a nd there is none that calleth upon thy name, that stirreth up himself to take hold of thee; for thou hast hidden thy face from us, and hast caused us to melt away through our iniquities.

There is no one who calls on Your name, Who arouses himself to take hold of You; For You have hidden Your face from us And have delivered us into the power of our iniquities.

8 A nd now, Jehovah, thou art our Father; we are the clay, and thou our potter; and we all are the work of thy hand.

But now, O Lord, You are our Father, We are the clay, and You our potter; And all of us are the work of Your hand.

9 B e not wroth very sore, O Jehovah, neither remember iniquity for ever. Behold, see, we beseech thee, we are all thy people.

Do not be angry beyond measure, O Lord, Nor remember iniquity forever; Behold, look now, all of us are Your people.

10 T hy holy cities are become a wilderness, Zion is a wilderness, Jerusalem a desolation.

Your holy cities have become a wilderness, Zion has become a wilderness, Jerusalem a desolation.

11 O ur holy and our beautiful house, where our fathers praised thee, is burnt up with fire, and all our precious things are laid waste.

Our holy and beautiful house, Where our fathers praised You, Has been burned by fire; And all our precious things have become a ruin.

12 W ilt thou restrain thyself in presence of these things, Jehovah? Wilt thou hold thy peace, and afflict us very sore?

Will You restrain Yourself at these things, O Lord ? Will You keep silent and afflict us beyond measure?
