1 A son of seven years Joash in his reigning, and forty years he hath reigned in Jerusalem, and the name of his mother Zibiah of Beer-Sheba.

Giô-ách được bảy tuổi khi người lên làm vua; người cai trị bốn mươi năm tại Giê-ru-sa-lem; mẹ người tên là Xi-bia, quê ở Bê -e-Sê-ba.

2 A nd Joash doth that which is right in the eyes of Jehovah all the days of Jehoiada the priest.

Giô-ách làm điều thiện trước mặt Đức Giê-hô-va trọn đời thầy tế lễ Giê-hô-gia-đa.

3 A nd Jehoiada taketh for him two wives, and he begetteth sons and daughters.

Giê-hô-gia-đa cưới hai vợ cho Giô-ách; người sanh được những con trai và con gái.

4 A nd it cometh to pass after this, it hath been with the heart of Joash to renew the house of Jehovah,

Sau việc này, Giô-ách có ý tu bổ đền của Đức Giê-hô-va,

5 a nd he gathereth the priests and the Levites, and saith to them, `Go out to the cities of Judah, and gather from all Israel money to strengthen the house of your God sufficiently year by year, and ye, ye do haste to the matter;' and the Levites have not hasted.

bèn nhóm những thầy tế lễ và người Lê-vi, mà bảo rằng: Hãy đi khắp các thành Giu-đa, thâu lấy tiền bạc của cả Y-sơ-ra-ên, để hằng năm tu bổ lại cái đền của Đức Chúa Trời các ngươi; khá làm việc này cho mau. Song người Lê-vi trì hưỡn.

6 A nd the king calleth for Jehoiada the head, and saith to him, `Wherefore hast thou not required of the Levites to bring in out of Judah and out of Jerusalem the tribute of Moses, servant of Jehovah, and of the assembly of Israel, for the tent of the testimony?

Vua vời thầy tế lễ thượng phẩm Giê-hô-gia-đa, mà bảo rằng: Cớ sao người Lê-vi từ Giu-đa và Giê-ru-sa-lem đem nộp thuế, mà Môi-se, tôi tớ của Đức Giê-hô-va, đã định cho hội chúng Y-sơ-ra-ên phải dâng cho trại chứng cớ?

7 f or sons of Athaliah, the wicked one, have broken up the house of God, and also, all the holy things of the house of Jehovah they have prepared for Baalim.'

Vì A-tha-li, người nữ độc ác kia, và các con trai nàng đã phá hủy đền của Đức Chúa Trời; và chúng nó đã dâng các vật thánh của đền Đức Giê-hô-va cho thần Ba-anh.

8 A nd the king speaketh, and they make one chest, and put it at the gate of the house of Jehovah without,

Vua bèn truyền dạy người ta đóng một cái hòm, để phía ngoài cửa đền Đức Giê-hô-va.

9 a nd give an intimation in Judah and in Jerusalem to bring in to Jehovah the tribute of Moses, servant of God, on Israel in the wilderness.

Rồi người ta rao cho khắp xứ Giu-đa và thành Giê-ru-sa-lem ai nấy phải đem dâng cho Đức Giê-hô-va tiền thuế mà Môi-se, tôi tớ của Đức Chúa Trời, đã định về Y-sơ-ra-ên tại trong đồng vắng.

10 A nd all the heads, and all the people rejoice, and they bring in, and cast into the chest, unto completion.

Hết thảy các quan trưởng và cả dân sự đều vui mừng, đem bạc đến bỏ vào trong hòm cho đến đầy.

11 A nd it cometh to pass, at the time one bringeth in the chest for the inspection of the king by the hand of the Levites, and at their seeing that the money abundant, that a scribe of the king hath come in, and an officer of the head-priest, and they empty the chest, and take it up and turn it back unto its place; thus they have done day by day, and gather money in abundance.

Khi người Lê-vi thấy trong hòm đựng nhiều bạc, bèn đem nó lên giao cho vua kiểm soát; thơ ký vua và người của thầy tế lễ thượng phẩm đều đến trút hòm ra, rồi đem để lại chỗ cũ. Mỗi ngày họ làm như vậy, và thâu được rất hiều bạc.

12 A nd the king and Jehoiada give it unto the doers of the work of the service of the house of Jehovah, and they are hiring hewers and artificers to renew the house of Jehovah, and also -- to artificers in iron and brass to strengthen the house of Jehovah.

Vua và Giê-hô-gia-đa giao bạc ấy cho những kẻ coi sóc công việc trong đền Đức Giê-hô-va; họ mướn thợ đẽo đá, và thợ mộc, đặng tu bổ đền Đức Giê-hô-va; cũng mướn những thợ sắt và thợ đồng đặng sửa lại đền Đức Giê-hô-va.

13 A nd those doing the business work, and there goeth up lengthening to the work by their hand, and they establish the house of God, by its proper measure, and strengthen it.

Vậy, các thợ làm công việc, và nhờ tay họ việc tu bổ được thành; chúng làm lại đền của Đức Chúa Trời như cũ, và làm cho vững chắc.

14 A nd at their completing, they have brought in before the king and Jehoiada the rest of the money, and they make it vessels for the house of Jehovah, vessels of serving, and of offering up, and spoons, even vessels of gold and silver; and they are causing burnt-offerings to ascend in the house of Jehovah continually, all the days of Jehoiada.

Khi đã làm xong, chúng bèn đem bạc còn dư lại đến trước mặt vua và Giê-hô-gia-đa; người ta dùng bạc ấy làm những đồ lễ về đền Đức Giê-hô-va, tức những đồ dùng về việc phụng sự, và về cuộc tế lễ, những chén, và những khí dụng bằng vàng bằng bạc. Trọn đời Giê-hô-gia-đa, người ta hằng dâng của lễ thiêu tại đền của Đức Giê-hô-va luôn luôn.

15 A nd Jehoiada is aged and satisfied with days, and dieth -- a son of a hundred and thirty years in his death,

Vả, Giê-hô-gia-đa đã trở về già tuổi rất cao, rồi qua đời; lúc người thác, được một trăm ba mươi tuổi.

16 a nd they bury him in the city of David, with the kings, for he hath done good in Israel, and with God, and his house.

Người ta chôn người tại trong thành Đa-vít chung với các vua, vì người có công lao trong Y-sơ-ra-ên, có hầu việc Đức Chúa Trời, và tu bổ đền của Ngài.

17 A nd after the death of Jehoiada come in have heads of Judah, and bow themselves to the king; then hath the king hearkened unto them,

Sau khi Giê-hô-gia-đa đã qua đời, các quan trưởng Giu-đa đến chầu lạy vua. Vua bèn nghe theo lời của chúng,

18 a nd they forsake the house of Jehovah, God of their fathers, and serve the shrines and the idols, and there is wrath upon Judah and Jerusalem for this their guilt.

lìa bỏ đền Đức Giê-hô-va là Đức Chúa Trời của tổ phụ mình, mà phục sự những thần A-sê-ra và các hình tượng; tại cớ tội lỗi ấy, bèn có cơn giận của Chúa nghịch cùng Giu-đa và Giê-ru-sa-lem.

19 A nd He sendeth among them prophets, to bring them back unto Jehovah, and they testify against them, and they have not given ear;

Đức Giê-hô-va sai các đấng tiên tri đến cùng chúng, để dắt chúng trở lại cùng Đức Giê-hô-va; nhưng chúng không chịu nghe.

20 a nd the Spirit of God hath clothed Zechariah son of Jehoiada the priest, and he standeth over-against the people, and saith to them, `Thus said God, Why are ye transgressing the commands of Jehovah, and prosper not? because ye have forsaken Jehovah -- He doth forsake you.'

Thần của Đức Chúa Trời cảm động Xa-cha-ri, con trai của thầy tế lễ Giê-hô-gia-đa; người đứng dậy trước mặt dân sự, mà nói rằng: Đức Chúa Trời phán như vầy: Cớ sao các ngươi phạm các điều răn của Đức Giê-hô-va? Các ngươi sẽ chẳng may mắn được, vì đã lìa bỏ Đức Giê-hô-va, và Đức Giê-hô-va cũng đã lìa bỏ các ngươi.

21 A nd they conspire against him, and stone him with stones by the command of the king, in the court of the house of Jehovah,

Chúng bèn phản nghịch với người, và theo lịnh vua ném đá người tại trong hành lang của đền Đức Giê-hô-va.

22 a nd Joash the king hath not remembered the kindness that Jehoiada his father did with him, and slayeth his son, and in his death he said, `Jehovah doth see, and require.'

Aáy vậy, vua Giô-ách không nhớ đến sự nhân từ của Giê-hô-gia-đa, cha của A-cha-xia, đã làm cho mình, nhưng giết con trai người đi; khi người chết thì có nói rằng: Nguyện Đức Giê-hô-va xem xét và báo lại cho!

23 A nd it cometh to pass, at the turn of the year, come up hath the force of Aram against him, and they come in unto Judah and Jerusalem, and destroy all the heads of the people from the people, and all their spoil they have sent to the king of Damascus,

Xảy khi đến cuối năm, thì đạo binh Sy-ri kéo lên hãm đánh Giô-ách; chúng nó loán đến Giu-đa và Giê-ru-sa-lem, giết các quan trưởng của dân, rồi gởi hết những của cướp về cho vua tại Đa-mách.

24 f or with few men have the force of Aram come in, and Jehovah hath given into their hand a mighty force for multitude, because they have forsaken Jehovah, God of their fathers; and with Joash they have executed judgments.

Đạo binh Sy-ri kéo đến có ít người, Đức Giê-hô-va lại phó một đạo binh rất đông vào tay chúng nó, bởi vì họ đã lìa bỏ Giê-hô-va Đức Chúa Trời của tổ phụ mình. Như vậy, dân Sy-ri xử hình phạt cho Giô-ách.

25 A nd in their going from him -- for they left him with many diseases -- his servants themselves have conspired against him, for the blood of the sons of Jehoiada the priest, and slay him on his bed, and he dieth; and they bury him in the city of David, and have not buried him in the graves of the kings.

Khi chúng đã bỏ đi rồi (vả chúng để người ở lại bị đau nặng), các đầy tớ người bèn phản nghịch cùng người, vì cớ huyết của con trai thầy tế lễ Giê-hô-gia-đa, giết người tại trên giường, và người chết; người ta chôn người tại trong thành Đa-vít, song không phải trong mồ các vua.

26 A nd these those conspiring against him, Zabad son of Shimeath the Ammonitess, and Jehozabad son of Shimrith the Moabitess.

Nầy là những kẻ dấy nghịch cùng người: Xa-bát, con trai của Si-mê-át, là đờn bà Am-môn, và Giô-xa-bát, con trai Sim-rít, là đờn bà Mô-áp.

27 A s to his sons, and the greatness of the burden upon him, and the foundation of the house of God, lo, they are written on the `Inquiry' of the book of the Kings; and reign doth Amaziah his son in his stead.

Còn về việc các con trai người, số cống thuế người phải nộp, và cuộc tu bổ đền của Đức Giê-hô-va, thảy đều chép trong sách truyện các vua. A-ma-xia, con trai người, cai trị thế cho người.
